The rags-to-riches story of Mystic Journey (Needs Further) was elevated to scarcely-believable heights at Flemington yesterday

as the Adam Trinder-trained three-year-old hit the line with her customary strength to land the inaugural running of the All-Star Mile (1600m).

Purchased by her trainer for $11,000 at the Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale in 2017, Mystic Journey brought her career earnings to $3,262,600 when coming home a length and a quarter too strong for Hartnell (Authorized), with a short-head back to Alizee (Sepoy) in third.

The victory arrived only two weeks on from her historical course and distance success in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) - the first top-flight win for a Tasmanian-trained horse since the introduction of the Group-race system in the early 1970s - while she has now won her last six races - a sequence that started in the Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Caulfield in September.

The legacy of Winx (Street Cry) is likely to remain unimpeached when the great mare bows out at Randwick next month and while it would be premature to suggest Mystic Journey is capable of taking over that batton, she is developing a growing space in racing’s consciousness as a tough and likeable filly who downs all before her. Street Sense (Street Cry) was provided with his Group / Grade 1 winner when the Ron Quinton-trained Dixie Blossoms (6 m ex Whistle Dixie by Star Way) won the Coolmore Classic (registered as TAD Kennedy) (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill yesterday. Street Sense is standing at Darley’s Jonabell Farm base in Kentucky for a fee of US$50,000.

Trinder recognised that is becoming the case, too.

"it was a fantastic galloping performance,” he said. "i don't know where the bottom of her is to be honest. She's only a young filly and she's on an upward spiral.

"it's very special. She was the first Tasmanian-trained Group 1 winner and she's now won the richest mile race in the world. We'll protect her and look after her and she might be able to take over the mantle of Winx.”

Mystic Journey was one of 14 starters in the $5 million race yesterday, earning one of four wildcard places following her Australian Guineas success, with the top ten slots having already been allocated by public vote.

Ridden by regular partner Anthony Darmanin, Mystic Journey sat midfield in the early stages as Hawkshot (Fiorente) cut out the early gallop from Grunt (o’Reilly) and Le Romain (Hard Spun).

Darmanin began to edge closer as the field swung for home, angling three deep and producing Mystic Journey with a sustained challenge in the home straight, although he was soon challenged by the strong-travelling Alizee, who loomed as the likeliest winner 300 metres out.

However, Mystic Journey continued to find plenty for pressure and was strongest in the closing stages, returning the $3.50 favourite as $13 chance Hartnell flew late, with Alizee having been sent off at $4.20 on her return to 1600 metres.

A visibly delighted Darmanin was soon up in the irons as the filly crossed the line and his emotion spilled into the the post-race debrief.

"it's just amazing. i just can't describe it," he said. “Her turn of foot again is just unbelievable.

"She's taken me on a journey i've never been on before. it's unbelievable."

Mystic Journey (3 f Needs Further - White Gold by Colombia) has now won ten of her 13 starts.

The first Group 1 winner for her Tasmania-based sire Needs Further (Encosta De Lago), who stands at Armidale Stud, Mystic Journey is one of three winners for White Gold (Colombia), herself victorious on two occasions and a sister to the stakes-placed oronero.

Mystic Journey is a half-sister to oh So Gold (Savoire Vivre), the dam of Listed winner Mystical Pursuit (Needs Further). Further back this is the family of multiple Group 1 winning filly Habibti (Habitat) and fellow multiple Group 1 winner octagonal (Zabeel).

Needs Further, who stood for a 2018 fee of $5500 (inc. GST), is the sire of three stakes winners and five stakes-performing horses.

Sentimental Miss victorious in Oaks in a race confined to elite fillies there can be no more fitting winner

than one who is female-trained and female-ridden and that was the case in yesterday’s running of the New Zealand oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) as trainer Lisa Latta and jockey Lisa Allpress combined perfectly to secure victory with Sentimental Miss (Reliable Man).

in doing so, the daughter of Reliable Man (Dalakhani) became the first Group 1 winner for her Westbury Stud-based sire, while she caused something of an upset having returned a $21 chance following her ninth-place finish in the Lowland Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Hawkes Bay last month.

However, the application of first-time blinkers and the step up to 2400 metres proved the key to improving a filly whose pedigree oozes stamina and she came home a length and a quarter too strong for Beyond The Fort (Niagara) ($41), with a further long-neck back to Star Karen (Camelot) ($81).

“it’s absolutely fantastic,” Latta said. “We walked away from the Lowland (finished ninth) wondering whether we should press on or not, but we decided to put the blinkers on today and i think that has made a huge difference.

“When she came through on the inside i thought she’d do well if she could run third or fourth, but she is bred to stay and it’s fantastic.

“She is a very easy filly and that’s why putting the blinkers on today didn’t really worry us.”

Allpress was more confident in the run than Latta having sat prominently in the early stages before staying on powerfully in the home straight.

“i was quite confident,” Allpress said. “We were just getting a lovely run, she was very relaxed and first time in blinkers.

“i was conscious of Murray Baker’s horses (Rubira and Queen of Diamonds) in front of me and they started dragging me into the run but they were under the bat.

“i thought i need to be a bit more patient but when it got to the top of the straight patience went out the window but she just kept fighting.”

A NZ$40,000 purchase at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale in 2017 by Go Racing, Sentimental Miss (3 f Reliable Man - Nostalgic by Quest For Fame) has won two of her 11 starts, amassing prize-money of NZ$273,625.

Sentimental Miss is one of nine named foals, eight of whom have raced and seven of whom have won out of the placed Quest For Fame (Rainbow Quest) mare Nostalgic and is her dams only stakes winner.

Nostalgic is herself a sister to Dracula, who was crowned Champion Two-Year-old in Australia in 1997/98 having won five times, three at Group 1 level, as well two further stakes winners.

Having foaled Sentimental Miss in 2015, Nostalgic subsequently missed to Darci Brahma (Danehill) in 2016 before producing a filly by Niagara (Encosta De Lago) in 2017 and a colt by Pins (Snippets) last year. She was served by Mapperley Stud resident Puccini (Encosta De Lago) last season.

subsequently landing the Queen Elizabeth ii Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) for Chris Waller, stood at Westbury Stud for a fee of $17,500 (plus GST) in 2018.

Reliable Man is currently standing at Haras d'Annebault for a fee of €9,000, while he has produced 79 individual global winners, seven at stakes level, from 187 runners.

Fourth Coolmore Classic for QuintonRandwick-based Ron Quinton continued his magnificent

association with the Coolmore Classic (registered as TAD Kennedy) (Gr 1, 1500m) when he won the race for the fourth time as a trainer courtesy of Dixie Blossoms’ (Street Sense) success at Rosehill yesterday.

Quinton, who also landed the contest twice as a jockey, was saddling Dixie Blossoms to a maiden Group 1 win after the consistent mare had finished sixth in the corresponding renewal twelve months ago, while she was down the field in 2017.

The six-year-old was due to be joined by stable companion Daysee Doom (Domesday), but she was withdrawn on account of her wide barrier and heavy track, but the scratching did not prevent Quinton from bringing up the quartet of wins as Dixie Blossoms proved two and a half lengths too strong for El Dorado Dreaming

(ilovethiscity) ($21), with fellow Kris Lees-trained runner Princess Posh (Canford Cliffs) ($41) a further length and a quarter away in third.

Quinton, who also numbers Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) wins amongst his illustrious career record, announced the win as his favourite success to date.

"This is my proudest day on a racecourse," Quinton said. "To win a Group 1 with my favourite horse is just unbelievable.

"She's been knocking on the door for a couple of years and she is such a doll. She is one of the kindest horses you could ever have anything to do with and you could let her out on the street and she would find her way home.

"i've just been dying for Dixie to win that Group 1 and she was like the Dixie of old."

Dixie Blossoms is set to go to stud in the spring and while Quinton suggested he might try to persuade owner Alan osburg into keep the mare in training, Quinton admits he “doesn’t think so”.

Returning a $21 chance, Dixie Blossoms was partnered to victory by Christian Reith, who made the late switch to Rosehill having originally scheduled to be ride Gosforth, a meeting that was cancelled because of rain.

"i was supposed to be going to Gosford today but thankfully a few owners allowed me to get off their horses to ride this mare and i couldn't be happier," the winning jockey said.

"She's such a beautiful mare and just to be part of her career has been an absolute pleasure.

"She deserves a Group 1 for the consistency that she has had. i couldn't be prouder, not only to win it for Ron and the owners but also for the mare.

"She was never going to get beaten i just had to pick the right way to go through and it all unfolded."

Bred and raced by Alan osburg, Dixie Blossoms (6 m Street Sense - Whistle Dixie by Star Way) has won seven of her 30 starts for career prize-money of $1,363,910.

She yesterday became the tenth Group / Grade 1 winner for Darley stallion Street Sense (Street Cry), who is currently standing at Jonabell Farm, Kentucky for a fee of US$50,000, while she is one of seven foals, six of whom have raced and four of whom have won out of the winning Star Way (Star Appeal) mare Whistle Dixie.

Dixie Blossoms is a half-sister to the Macau Listed winner Excel (Falbrav), who raced in Australia under the name of Able Green, while Whistle Dixie is herself a half-sister to six further winners, two of whom are stakes performers.

Dixie Blossoms’ second dam, Proteaceae (Kaapstad), is half-sister to New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Zonda (Zabeel), who was crowned Champion older Male Miler/intermediate in New Zealand in 2001.

Golden Slipper shaken-up Two significant juvenile performances provided a fresh impetus

heading into next week’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as Cosmic Force (Deep Field) blew away his rivals in the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill, while Kiamichi (Side Step) landed the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) earlier on the card.

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) runner-up Cosmic Force was parachuted into $7 third-favouritism for the Golden Slipper following his seven and a quarter-length demolition - his second win in four starts and one that confirmed him as joining stable companions Anaheed (Fastnet Rock) and Catch Me (i Am invincible) in the $3.5 million race line-up.

Cosmic Force returned the $3.50 favourite yesterday with Born A Warrior ($7) (i Am invincible) running second and the winner’s stable companion, Stronger ($11) (Not A Single Doubt), finishing a further half a length away in third.

Having relished the testing conditions at Rosehill, Snowden is confident Cosmic Force can play a significant part in the Golden Slipper if similar ground conditions materialise on Saturday.

“if the track is like this next weekend he comes right into the race,” he said. “if anything, today just settles him a bit better for next week. The quick back-up won’t worry him - he’s a great doer.”

The success of Cosmic Force paid a handsome compliment to the form of the Godolphin-owned Microphone (Exceed And Excel), who proved his length and a quarter superior in the Skyline Stakes, and the depth of juvenile talent in Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s operation was given a further boost when Kiamichi landed the Magic Night Stakes by a length and a quarter.

Returning at $21, Kiamichi secured the spoils from Crystal Falls (Medaglia D’oro), with a short-head back to the winner’s stable companion Athiri ($4.40f) (Lonhro) in third.

The winner is now a $34 chance for the Golden Slipper, the market for which is headed by the $5 favourite Yes Yes Yes (Rubick), who won the Todman Stakes (Gr 2,1200m) for Chris Waller the previous weekend.

The James Cummings-trained Kiamichi joined stable companions Microphone, Tenley (Medaglia D’oro), Pin Sec (Lonhro) and Exhilarates (Snitzel) as certain starters in the contest, while they will participate alongside the Anthony Cummings-trained Lyre (Lonhro), who carried the Royal Blue silks to success in last month’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Godolphin representative Darren Beadman said the operation were in a privileged position heading into Australia’s most prestigious juvenile contest.

“it’s just a dream to have so many nice colts and lovely fillies to be presented on Golden Slipper day,” he said.

Referring to Kiamichi, he continued: “Ït was a very, very positive win the way she did it both ends. She ticked another box, she can handle the ground so, look, it’s a wonderful position to be in to have the selection of horses that we’ve got in the Slipper.”

A winner of two of his four starts, amassing prize-money of $178,065, Cosmic Force was purchased for $180,000 by the China Horse Club, Newgate Farm and WinStar from the draft of Ascot Park at the inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

in winning yesterday, he became the first top-flight scorer for his WinStar Farm-based sire Deep Field (Northern Meteor), while he is a half-brother to onemorezeta (onemorenomore), who numbers amongst her three wins the 2014 renewal of the Gucci Stakes (registered as the Begonia Belle Stakes) (Gr 3, 1100m).

Cosmic Force’s dam, the winning Commands (Danehill) mare Little Zeta, has produced seven named foals, six of whom have raced and all of whom have won. She was served by Deep Field last year having missed to Vancouver (Medaglia D’oro) in 2017.

A Godolphin Australia homebred, Kiamichi (2 f Sidestep - ouachita by Canny Lad) has also won two of her four starts, amassing prize money of $205,850.

Her victory was the first stakes winner for first-season sire Sidestep (Exceed And Excel), with the Telemon Thoroughbreds resident having also sired one further winner in Sidekiss.

Kiamichi is a half-sister to the Listed winner Cossetot (Epaulette), while she is out of the unraced Canny Lad (Bletchingly) mare ouachita, who is herself an own-sister to Preserve, who was second-top filly in the Australasian Two-Year-old classification in 1999-2000 and has subsequently produced two Group 3 winners.

ouachita is also a half-sister to Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Denman (Lonhro), who stands at Darley Australia. ouachita slipped to Epaulette in 2017, while she has since produced a filly by Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux).

First for Deep FieldNewgate Farm-based stallion Deep Field (Northern Meteor) sired his first stakes winner yesterday when the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Cosmic Force (2 c ex Little Zeta by Commands) took out the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill. The colt was purchased by China Horse Club, Winstar and Newgate Farm for $180,000 at the inglis Classic Sale from the Ascot Park draft. Deep Field has six lots catalogued for the upcoming inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Click here to view the catalogue.

First for SidestepThe James Cummings-trained Kiamichi (2 f ex ouachita by Canny Lad) stayed on strongly to win the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill yesterday and in the process provided first-season sire Sidestep (Exceed And Excel) with his first stakes winner and second winner overall. The two-year-old Darley homebred joins Sidekiss as the stallion’s other winner. Sidestep stands at Telemon Thoroughbreds in Queensland.

Two for Super Easy The Joe Pride-trained Easy Eddie (4 g ex Twin Town by Halling) won the Maurice McCarten Handicap (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill yesterday, handing Super Easy (Darci Brahma) his second stakes winner. The four-year-old gelding stayed on strongly to beat She Knows (Denman) by a head, with the same distance back to All over Bosanova (Court Command) in third. “He might run here in a week's time in the Galaxy," Pride said. "i just want to see how he pulls up first. it was always our plan that if he ran well to potentially back him up, because he is a good back-up horse, but we weren’t counting on a Heavy 10 today. i'll keep an eye on him over the next 48 hours."

Verry Elleegant lands Group 2Verry Elleegant (3 f Zed - opulence by Danroad) landed her second stakes race when running out a convincing winner of the Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill. The Chris Waller-trained filly put three and a half lengths on Group 1 winner Seabrook (Hinchinbrook) with VRC oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Aristia (Lonhro) another length and three quarters lengths away in third. "How far she gets this prep i’m not sure, but obviously we will go a bit higher," Waller said. "There’s certainly room for improvement but she has got a lot of class. The Vinery seems logical. She had a minor setback after her first-up run, which was well documented, so i guess she was a little bit fresh.

Tancred aim for Red CardinalFollowing his victory in the Sky High Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Rosehill yesterday, Kris Lees has said he plans to aim Red Cardinal (7 g Montjeu - Notable by Zafonic) at the HE Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) on March 30. The seven-year-old won the Parramatta Cup (Listed, 1900m) on his last start and he followed up that victory, beating Rodrico (High Chaparral) by just over a length with Goathland (Teofilo) another nose away in third. “He’s been very fortunate that his two runs for us have been on soft ground, which is a much preferred surface for him,” said Lees. “He has always been a horse that is highly regarded - he ran in two Melbourne Cups on firm ground, but now he is in at the right time. He will probably go to a BMW (Tancred Stakes) in a fortnight’s time and i think he will hold his own there.”

Fifty Stars sparkles in Ajax StakesThe Lindsay Park-trained Fifty Stars (4 h Sea the Stars - Swizzle Stick by Sadler's

Wells) landed the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill yesterday, providing Jye McNeil with his first Sydney winner. Fifty Stars beat a courageous Mask of Time (Holy Roman Emperor) by a neck with Dyslexic (Foxwedge) another short neck away. “i must admit, at about 100-metre mark he looked like he was labouring a little bit but he just needed to balance up and then he hit the line,” co-trainer Dabernig said. “He’s a colt and he’s building a good record now, so we’ll probably head towards the Doncaster. We’ll see how he pulls up but at this stage it would be the logical plan. i thought today he was there to be beaten and he won the race so it was a good effort.”

192 for More Than ReadyThe Mick Price-trained Ready Set Sail (2 f ex Jolie Brise by Fastnet Rock) dead-heated with Flit (Medaglia D’oro) in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington yesterday and in the process provided former shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo) with his 192nd stakes winner. More Than Ready is standing at WinStar Farm for a fee of US$80,000 and he will not return to Vinery Stud in the Hunter Valley. More Than Ready has 14 lots catalogued at the inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, which begins its two-day run on April 9.

Ready Set Sail to PaddockFollowing Ready Set Sail’s victory in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes Mick Price said the filly would now head to the paddock and would be set for the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in the spring. "it's better than running second and it goes in the book for these fillies that they're a Group 3 winner which is all important for later on," Price said. "it's job done for now and well done to ollie, but can i say he mistimed his run."

125 for Medaglia D'OroReady Set Sail shared her victory in the Group 3 with the James Cummings-trained Flit (2 f ex Glissade by Redoute's Choice), providing former shuttler Medaglia D'oro (El Prado) with his 125 stakes winner. The filly will either now run in the ATC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on April 6 or the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) the following week. "She's in some Sydney features but we'll give her a few days at Carbine Lodge to wind down after that effort," Cummings said. "She's got a lot of scope - she's got a big action and to Dwayne's credit that's what he was trying to make full use of. He just felt like if he waited too long they might have left her flat-footed and i suspect she might have caught him by surprise. She'll come on from that for sure."

Widgee Turf brave in Flemington successWidgee Turf (5 g Turffontein - Greyhound by Kala Dancer) produced a impressive display, carrying top-weight of 60 kilograms, to land the March Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington yesterday. Ridden by Billy Egan, Widgee Turf was backed from $4.80 into $4 favouritism and defeated Hellova Street (Helike) by a long-neck, with Streets of Avalon (Magnus) a neck away in third place. "it was a good win, especially on the firm track," Egan said. "He really let down well. He likes to have a resting run during the race and i thought i'd be able to get past them, but then that leaves time for something to run me down. But he's a real trier so you can never bag him. He always runs an honest race and i'm certainly rapt to be associated with him."

Causeway Girl to PJ Bell The Clinton McDonald-trained filly Causeway Girl (Shamus Award) is bound for The Championships in Sydney after making a winning return in her first autumn assignment in the Furphy Ale Trophy (1100m) at Flemington yesterday, with the PJ Bell Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) nominated as her next target. Causeway Girl, ridden by Damien oliver, defeated Thine is The Power (Street Boss) by a half-head with a short half-head to Beauty (Smart Missile) third. "We've got a plan for

her and it's coming along nicely," McDonald said. "We really think she has come on this preparation. She did a good job in her first preparation. We gave her a good spell and hopefully she can reward us this time around. i think she's in for a good preparation."

12 for Trade FairThe Adam Durrant-trained Jedaffair (3 f ex King's Lynn by King's Best) prevailed in a blanket finish to win the Natasha Stakes (Listed, 2200m) at Ascot and in the process handed Trade Fair (Blackfriars) a 12th stakes success. The three-year-old filly beat Ping Me Another (Musket) by a nose with just over a length back to the winner’s stablemate Asserto (Blackfriars) in third.

Two for Playing GodThe Neville Parnham-trained Platoon (3 g ex oriel by oratorio) won the JC Roberts Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Ascot yesterday and handed Playing God (Blackfriars) his second stakes winner. The three-year-old gelding pulled a length and three quarters clear of Regal Power (Pierro), with Blackwood River (Blackfriars) in third. Playing God stands at Mungrup Stud in South Australia.

The Odyssey shines in $500,000 Jewel winThe odyssey (Better Than Ready) landed the lucrative Aquis 2Yo Jewel (1200m) at the Gold Coast yesterday, his fourth win from a seven-start career. The odyssey ($3.30) hit the front before hanging on by a length to the fast finishing Miss Cavallo (Nicconi). Ready To Roam (Ready To Roam) also ran on well to finish third. "He was doing well and i believe the track was too hard for him in the Millions," Kelly Schweida said. "This race was worth more than a Group 1 and was restricted to QTiS horses so provided he was well i thought why not have a go. He was able to win his lead-up two weeks ago to get ready for today. Things have gone pretty well to plan for him since he came back. Even the float trip down from Brisbane today was good.”

Five for RubickCoolmore Stud-based first season sire Rubick (Encosta De Lago) sired his fifth winner courtesy

of Biscara’s (2 c ex Liza by Strategic) victory in the James Boags Maiden 2Yo Plate (1000m) at Morphettville yesterday. The Lindsay-Park trained filly beat Holy Dancer (Sacred Falls) by a quarter of a length with inciter (Fighting Sun) a length away in third. Rubick has three lots catalogued at the upcoming inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, which begins on April 9 at Riverside Stables.

Four for WhittingtonThe Lyle Rowe-trained Whitty Girl (2 f ex Yatala by More Than Ready) handed her sire Whittington (Tale of The Cat) wth his fourth winner when landing the St Patrick's Day RC Murray Roche Lawyers Maiden 2Yo Handicap (1100m) at Rockhampton yesterday. The filly defeated Dakiel Lass (Rothesay) by a length followed closely by Arjaycee (Dreamscape) in third. Whittington stands at Grandview Stud and covered 107 mares in 2018.

Winx in top order ahead of George RyderWinx (Street Cry) tuned up for her tilt in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) with an exhibition gallop in between races at Rosehill yesterday. Waller described it as “perfect” work and said the raceday exercise was an important part of her conditioning programme. “We’ve always done it when she’s had three weeks between runs, we bring her here today for an exhibition gallop,” Waller said. it just seems to fit in well, it brings her back down to earth. And that’s Winx - she’s just ready to explode. it makes my job a lot easier.”Winx is scheduled to have her final start in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick on April 13.

88 for SavabeelThe Waikato Stud-based stallion Savabeel (Zabeel) sired his 88th stakes winner when Concert Hall (4 f ex Classic Legacy by Carnegie) won the Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham yesterday. The four-year-old beat Jessiegee (Alamosa) by two and a half lengths, with Tinkalicious (Nadeem) coming home in third. Savabeel has four lots catalogued at the inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

More stakes success for Volks LightningVolks Lightning (5 f Volksraad - Next Century by Stravinksy) supplemented her Arawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m) success last october with victory in the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m) later on the Trentham card. Princess Kereru (Pins) was beaten a neck into second, with the same margin back to Ferrando (Fast ‘N’ Famous), who is a stable companion of the winner, in third. “She deserved this. She has been miss consistent all the way through,” co-trainer Bailey Rogerson said. “She has been a constant in these Group and Listed races and it was good for her to get the win today. i think the owners are looking to head to the Gold Coast (Broodmare) Sale this year...and she is very valuable.”

Emily Margaret too strong in GuineasThe Kevin Hughes-trained Emily Margaret (Pins) prevailed by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling finish to the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) - the feature contest on the Trentham card. Vigor Winner (Declaration of War) just missed out in second, while Dawn Patrol (Dawn Approach) was a further neck away in third. “it’s unbelievable, i thought we were second,” Hughes said. “it’s great for her and great for the South island. We’ve had a terrible time down there. This is fantastic. She tries hard and there are not many times she hasn’t fronted up. She missed the start today and i thought ‘oh dear’, but she just stormed home. She did that second-up this year over 1000 metres but that was huge.”

Sampson strikes in St LegerAlso at Trentham, the Howie Matthews-trained Sampson (9 g Dubai Destination - Magic Star by Danzero) produced an emphatic, strong-staying performance to land the New Zealand St Leger (Listed, 2600m). Lucetta (Savabeel) finished eight and a quarter lengths away in second, while Soleseifei (Shocking) was a further three-quarters of a length away in third. “obviously he’s just out-stayed them all,” winning jockey Johnathan Parkes said. “i wasn’t really happy with pace down the back and i was able to let him roll forward and from there he has pretty much just dominated the race. it’s just such a shame that he missed out on the Wellington Cup this year, but who knows, he might be back here next year for it.”

Analysis: Highly consistent mare Dixie Blossoms broke through for her first Group 1 victory in winning here, her seventh win (13 placings) from 30 starts. She settled in tenth place on the rails from barrier two, made ground on the inner nearing the home turn, got a split to hit the front on passing the 200m and then went on to score a very good win. El Dorado Dreaming settled back in 14th place from her difficult barrier (17), improved between runners at the home turn to be in a challenging position at the 200m. She then kept fighting well for a very good second. Princess Posh settled back in 16th place from her very wide barrier (19). She looked for a run between horses at the home turn, got into clear running at the 200m and then ran on well to gain third in a photo from Mizzy who had been a handy sixth before fighting on gamely for (3.9 lengths) fourth. Aloisia was back in 18th place, improved along the rails halfway down the straight and kept running on well for (4.2 lengths) fifth in a good effort at her second run back, just in advance of Oregon’s Day who had been a handy seventh, hit the front at the 200m and battled well for (5.3 lengths) sixth.

Analysis: A strong second, two starts back, in the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa, Sentimental Miss caused a minor upset here yet saw out the 2400m convincingly for her second win and maiden stakes win. She sat sixth (rails) with a circuit remaining, improving one spot down the back straight and past the 1400m. She found herself eighth at the 1000m but saving ground along the inner. Approaching the 600m jockey Lisa Allpress angled away from the rail and was right in behind the leading bunch. Turning in she was presented with a huge gap when the leaders fanned but was bumped slightly at the 350m. Allpress got her balanced then she rallied to challenge for the lead, took over at the 200m then fought off the chasers to be a length and a quarter clear at the line. Beyond The Fort tracked the winner from the 600m but switched to fence at the top of the straight then kept on doggedly to the line for a tough second. Mostly well back Star Karen ran wide from the 600m, challenged hard from the 300m then kept on gamely for third. Clementina was desperately unlucky, hampered several times in the straight yet flashed through late to grab a good fourth.

Analysis: Verry Elleegant scored a very smart win here, now looking on track for the upcoming ATC Australian oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). She raced in fourth place on the rails, went through on the inner at the leaders fanned deep at the home turn. She got to the front at the 200m and impressed in the manner in which she drew away over the closing stages to score decisively. Seabrook shared the lead, went deep at the home turn and held an advantage on straightening. She then fought well for second at her second run this preparation. The VRC oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Aristia was a handy third (wide), went deep at the home turn and then kept battling on well for third in a sound effort at second run back. Qafila raced in eighth place, got between runners at the home turn and then kept fighting on for (6.3 lengths) fourth.

Analysis: in a crowded finish Southern raider Emily Margaret had the last run at them to make it back-to-back stakes and her fourth career win (third stakes) from 12 starts. She drifted back early to settle second last, remaining there past the 800m before getting off the fence to make her run. improving quickly around them, she went up six wide and on straightening (still midfield) was widest but one. Jockey Robert Hannam kept at her and she gradually crept into the fray, was one of three across the track inside the 100m then stretched her head two strides off the post to get the decision by a half head. Vigor Winner had a nice run in fourth (rails) from the 600m but didn’t get out until the 250m, led briefly but was nailed just short of the line. Dawn Patrol made his run, wide out from the 600m, challenged at the 200m but was outgunned over the last 100m a short neck back in third. Cavallo Veloce got out late and finished well between runners for fourth.

Analysis: Fifty Stars followed his win in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington on March 2 when having his second start for new trainers Lindsay Park with another good win here. He had a nice trip in fourth place but was under pressure when the tempo increased from the 600m before rallying late, he then came with a strong finish to score well. Mask Of Time went to the front from his inside barrier (1). He then set a moderate pace, got a break on straightening and was only overhauled in the latter stages for second after running a bold race. Dyslexic raced outside the leader (Mask of Time) and kept fighting very gamely for a close-up third, while Kaonic ran on from ninth at the home turn for (2.5 lengths) fourth.

Analysis: Consistent four-year-old Easy Eddie took his record to eight wins (eight placings) from 20 starts in taking out his first stakes success in good style here. He settled nicely in fourth place, moved up nicely from the 300m, hit the front at the 100m and went on to win well. it was also a good ride by Robbie Dolan. She Knows raced in second last place in the ten-horse field, got along the inner at the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then battled well for second. All Over Bosanova raced outside the leader (Fiery Heights), went to the front at the 300m and then fought on well for a close-up third while Trekking made late ground from eighth to finish (1.2 lengths) fourth.

Analysis: on different strides and in a desperate head-bobbing finish the judge was unable to separate dead-heaters Flit and Ready Set Sail. Flit sat fourth last and wide at the crossing, began to gather in the leaders inside the 400m and co-led with two others at the 200m. She looked

an easy winner at the 100m but was challenged strongly from the 50m and had to share the honours at the line. Ready Set Sail was a clear last at the crossing but inside the 200m flew hard to level up to the leader then battled it out gamely for the dead-heat. Both were having just their second starts and maiden wins. Talented was also back at the crossing and kept up a strong run from the 150m for a handy third from California Honey who was blocked until the 200m then finished quite well along the inner for fourth.

Analysis: Godolphin-raced filly Kiamichi followed her good first-up fourth in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on March 2 with a smart win here, her second in four starts to date. She showed good pace from her wide barrier (10) and soon crossed to take the lead. She then travelled well, got a break on turning for home and was not seriously threatened from that point to win well. Crystal Falls settled back in tenth place, saved ground along the inner at the home turn, went to third at the 200m and kept making ground to take second in a photo, staging a promising effort at only her second start. Athiri raced in fourth place, went to second at the 300m and then battled on nicely for third. Amercement settled at the tail of the field from her outside barrier (15), got along the rails rounding the home turn and kept running on for (2.5 lengths) fourth. The well-performed New Zealand filly Probabeel settled in 14th place, went deep rounding the home turn and made good ground in the Heavy 10 conditions to finish (3.7 lengths) sixth at her Australian debut.

Analysis: Cosmic Force followed his good second to talented colt Microphone in the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on March 2 with a really impressive victory here. He was smartly away and after trapped deep early on he crossed to race in third place (wide) before going to the front at the 200m. He then raced right away to win very easily in the Heavy 10 conditions by just over seven lengths. Born A Warrior went to the front, was overtaken at the 200m but held on well to take second in a promising effort at only his second start. Stronger settled in tenth place, switched deeper on straightening and ran on nicely for third. Autocratic settled back in ninth place, commenced his move on turning for home and kept running on nicely for fourth, albeit beaten eight lengths.

Analysis: Favourite Concert Hall powered away in the last 100m to claim win five from nine starts, three on end, her maiden stakes win and will now likely head to Te Aroha for the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) early next month. She jumped away well but being drawn wide (10) soon dropped back to third last and back to the rear by two lengths at the 1200m. Past the 800m she tacked onto the field and quickly ran up very wide near the last corner. Jockey Matthew Cameron got her balanced and from the 300m she went strongly after the leaders, ranged alongside at the 100m then poured on the pressure to come away by two and half lengths at the post. Jessiegee sat sixth (one out) at the 800m, challenged six wide turning in and co-led at the 250m but had no answer to the winner over the final 100m yet held on well. Tinkalicious sat fifth (rails) turning in, didn’t get clear until the 250m then finished well for third from Igraine who co-led at the 250m but could only battle from there to the line.

Analysis: irish-bred Red Cardinal followed good win when resuming in the Parramatta Cup (Listed, 1900m) at this track on February 23 with a smart win here. He travelled nicely for Kerrin McEvoy back in sixth place, delayed his move until into the home straight and then came with a strong late finish to score a really good win in a solid staying effort. Rodrico had a nice trip in third place, stuck to the rails and took the lead on turning for home and then fought well under his limit weight (55kg) for second. Goathland raced outside the leader (Samadoubt), went deep rounding the home turn and kept battling on well for third. Brimham Rocks was fifth on the rails and battled on for (3.3 lengths) fourth while Samadoubt again led, went wide nearing the home turn (looking for better going) and then battled in the straight for (4.6 lengths) fifth.

Slightly worse than midfield with a circuit to run, rider Jonathan Parkes set him alight at the 1400 due to a slow tempo and took up the running at the 1200m. Analysis: Jedaffair made it three on end and a maiden stakes win at her first attempt with a game win here. She was second early, dropping back to third down the far side then up into second again, a length back at the 1000m. From the 600m she moved up to the leader’s flanks then levelled

up at the top of the straight. She was away by a length at the 200m and the same at the 100m then had to withstand a strong challenge late, holding on by a short neck at the line. Ping Me Another got off the fence in sixth at the 600m, turned in four wide and went after the leader. She took a few strides to balance but was the strongest of the challengers, running on well late and taking ground off the winner with every stride. Assetro turned in wide and kept up a strong run for third, a nose in front of the very fast finishing Dark Choice.

Analysis: Platoon appreciated the extra distance and in a mild upset cleared out for a decisive win, his second and maiden stakes. After a good start he dropped away through the field to settle fifth last down the back, remaining there to the 500m before pulling out wide approaching the last corner. He was widest turning in, balanced then motored quickly up to the leader, stormed past at the 100m then raced away for an easy two lengths win. Regal Power was locked away on the fence in second last at the 500m, moved one out but with nowhere to go turning in, weaved in and out, got clear at the 150m then flew home but much too late. Blackwood River sat second turning in, caught the leader but was swamped by the winner, holding on for third from the tiring pacemaker Cockney Crew.

Analysis: Having finished second or third in his last seven starts Widgee Turf returned to the winner’s circle for the tenth time and second stakes win in a determined effort here. He settled sixth, one off the fence, gradually gaining ground on the leading five around the big bend to be handy and ready to pounce at the 400m. Jockey Billy Egan got busy, gave him a shake or two and at the 200m was less than a half length away. He kept coming at them to level up at the 100m then edged into the lead with a neck to spare at the line. Hellova Street moved up three wide from the 600m to sit just off the pace, held second at the 200m, co-led at the 100m but was out-finished yet a game second. A head back in third Streets Of Avalon took over the lead turning in, kicked clear at the 300m but was not caught until the 100m and held on well. Zebulon came out of the pack, finishing fast to nab a solid fourth.

Analysis: Volks Lightning fought hard to get a narrow win here, her career sixth and second stakes win. She sat fourth, one away from the fence early and held that spot at the crossing. Jockey Ryan Elliot took her wider once into the straight, got her balanced but three lengths from the leader at the 300m. Things didn’t look much better at the 200m but Elliot kept working on her and she gradually caught the pacemaker inside the 50m then stuck her head out just short of the line. Princess Kereru tracked the winner over the crossing, went wider into the straight then kept winding but was not able to overhaul the winner despite gaining late. Ferrando was second, one out, at the crossing, went after the pacemaker from the 400m, led at the 50m but was outgunned late a long head back in third from pacemaker Passing Shot who was caught at the 50m yet fought well to be another long head back in fourth.

Analysis: Following an excellent Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) triumph here two weeks ago, Tasmania’s darling Mystic Journey stepped up to the big time and was equally impressive, having no favours with the draw or in the running yet won convincingly, her tenth in 13 starts. Drawn barrier 13 of 14 she began well yet soon found herself midfield and very wide but when the field settled was three deep but with no cover. Passing the 1000m she moved forward but was four deep approaching the 600m. into the straight jockey Anthony Darmanin urged her along and she crept closer to the pace, got within a length at the 300m, co-led at the 150m, edged into the lead inside the 100m then eased clear by a length and a quarter at the post. A terrific run from Hartnell who was midfield at the 1000m but in heavy traffic at the top of the straight. He weaved in and out but didn’t see daylight until the 200m then finished with a withering run between runners to grab second right on the line. Alizee was well back at the 600m, got a dream run through at the 300m and co-led at the 200m but had no answer to the winner and was nabbed for second at the post. Le Romain was second turning in, led briefly, co-led at the 200m then kept on gamely to the line for fourth.

Analysis: The favourite The Odyssey was quickly away from his inside barrier (1) and went to the front as expected. He then held out some early pressure (from Sugar Boom), got a break on turning for home and then held on gamely in the Heavy 10 conditions to win well, his fourth win (two placings) from seven starts. Miss Cavallo settled in last place in the 12-horse field, improved nicely nearing the home turn and then came with a late run (widest of all) to take second just in front of Ready To Roam who had been sixth rounding the home turn before running on nicely for third with Perudo a close-up fourth after being a handy third at the home turn.

VERDICT Newcomers Flying Victory and Speedy Optimist areexpected to make their presence felt but MR CROISSANT made

a good debut when second over this 6f last month. That experience and the bookingof Ryan Moore can earn him a first success. Don’t discount Blink Of A Second ashe made a pleasing debut here before failing at Happy Valley.

VERDICT It would come as no surprise to see lightly-raced Dan Controlmake a winning start to his Hong Kong career. Runner-up to easy

winner Ten Sovereigns in a Curragh Group 3 and trail work has caught the eye.Chances are he will be well backed and perhaps that will allow Aerohappiness andLooking Good to start at decent prices. Return to this track should help LOOKINGGOOD make his mark in this class, especially over this trip.

VERDICT With Mission Control being dealt a rough hand with a widedraw, he is unlikely to get the uncontested lead he had to score in

the Hong Kong Classic Cup and it could be left to the runner-up, DARK DREAM toget his revenge. Zac Purton’s mount was sent off odds-on to turn over his stablemate last month but couldn’t get by him in the straight but better can be expectedover this longer trip. Waikuku faces his toughest challenge to date but he’s in toporder and will be finishing fastest of all down the home straight.

VERDICT Plenty of these have something to prove so the safest optionlooks to be SUPER STAR who is twice a winner from just four

starts and was a comfortable winner over C&D last month. Happy Force is in greatheart and should have a role to play despite the latest 6lb rise while Planet Starshould be competitive from a good draw following his recent success over C&D inClass 4 company.
