Kevin Peters, Artistic DirectorKevin Peters holds a Masters Degree in Instrumental Conducting from Ithaca College, where he conducted nearly every major instrumental ensemble, including several performances as orchestra director with the college’s nationally recognized theater program. Locally he has conducted shows for the Eau Claire Children’s Theater, Chippewa Valley Theater Guild, and the Menomonie Theater Guild. In addition to his conducting engagements, Mr. Peters works as an artist representative for Arts Management Associates, and is the manager and exclusive agent for the Dallas Brass.

Program NotesOverture to La Clemenza di Tito, K. 621In July 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart received a commission to compose a specific dramatic opera: La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus). It was to be performed in Prague as part of the celebrations marking Austrian Emperor Leopold II’s inauguration as King of Bohemia. The premiere was set for September and Mozart put aside two unfinished projects, the Requiem Mass and another opera, The Magic Flute, and set to work. He composed most of it in Vienna, and then completed it in Prague. The premiere on September 6 won only moderate success. Further performances in Prague and Vienna drew a warmer response, and it remained popular throughout Europe during much of the nineteenth century. After a lengthy period of neglect (at least in comparison with other late Mozart operas), it has once again risen to the top ranks of popularity among late-eighteenth century operas. The libretto by Pietro Metastasio centers on Titus Flavius Sabinus Vespasianus, a Roman emperor who lived during the first century A.D. His generosity of spirit extended even to forgiving the people who conspired to assassinate him. The overture is compact and regal in nature, aptly setting the scene for this tale of royal intrigue.

Batti, Batti, O Bel Masetto from Don GiovanniMozart based his opera Don Giovanni on the medieval legend of Don Juan, composing it with the help of librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. The work premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague on October 29, 1787, and was the first time that an opera portrayed the character of Don Juan seriously. It has been said that Mozart was slowly going mad while composing the piece, and worked himself to death. In fact, some people believe that the ghost at the end of the opera is really a depiction of the ghost of Mozart’s father, with whom he had a falling out. In this aria, Zerlina is trying to cover up her indiscretions with Don Giovanni. She tells her fiancé Masetto that nothing happened between Don Giovanni and herself, yet prompts him to unleash his wrath on her anyway. In this way, Zerlina attempts to convince Masetto to let out his anger and then forgive her, even though she knows that he would never truly hurt her. Her apology is thus laced with an underlying feeling of getting away with cheating, while laughing at her fiancé.

Flute Concerto in D Major (K. 314) Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D Major (K. 314) is the same concerto as the oboe concerto in C Major written in 1777. Mozart rewrote it for the Dutch amateur flutist and patron of music, de Jean, who had already played the Flute Concerto in G Major (K. 313) and was impatiently awaiting a new concerto to play. Because he was pressed for time and money, Mozart simply rewrote the oboe concerto.Movement two is a ravishing, sensuous love song in G major, perhaps inspired by the brown eyes of Mozart’s love interest. Languishing chromaticism inflects its melodies, and it closes with a sighing dissonance in the oboe. The perky rondo finale boasts one of Mozart’s most infectious refrain tunes; it is such a delicious concoction that Mozart returned to it in 1781 for a merry aria in his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, “Welche Wonne, Welche Lust.”

The Star Wars Epic–Part 2 (Suite)John Williams (b. 1932) studied composition at UCLA with Mario Castelnueovo-Tedesco and later attended the Juilliard School. In 1956, he started working as a session pianist in film orchestras. He has composed the music and served as music director for over 70 films, including Jaws, E.T., Star Wars, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park and Memoirs of a Geisha. Williams has been awarded two Emmys, five Oscars, and 17 Grammy Awards, as well as several gold and platinum records. From 1980 to 1993, Williams served as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.George Lucas’ high energy “Star Wars” adventure films are a highly imaginative entertainment experience that transports the audience to an unknown galaxy thousands of light years from earth. It is a blending of contemporary science fiction with the romantic fantasies of sword and sorcery. The story follows a young man, Luke Skywalker, on a journey through exotic worlds in search for the kidnaped Princess Leia, culminating in a dramatic space dogfight over the huge man-made planet destroyer, Death Star. Composed in 1977, John Williams’ score reinforces the high adventure and soaring spirits of the film’s story. Continuity is given to the score through themes for each of the characters; these leitmotifs appear in a variety of permutations determined by the dramatic action on the screen. For this medley, arranger Robert W. Smith has chosen some of the most popular themes from episodes four, five, and six. The suite ends with the main title theme which draws this suite to an epic and fitting conclusion.

Haydn Piano Concerto in C Franz Joseph Haydn was a prominent and prolific Austrian composer of the Classical period who was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the piano trio. His contributions to musical form have earned him the epithets, “Father of the symphony” and “Father of the string quartet.” Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterhazy family at their remote estate. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, “forced to become original.” Yet his music circulated widely and for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe.

Composed in the late 1760s, this piano concerto in C major is actually classified as a divertimento in Haydn’s catalog of works. This piece along with a few other divertimenti are typically performed by younger students as piano concertos. In spite of its simplicity, this concerto nevertheless evinces throughout the charming and gracious spirit of Haydn.

Russian Easter Overture, Op.36Early in 1888, Rimsky-Korsakov began to sketch a short work for orchestra that he called La Grand Pâque Russe–The Great Russian Easter. It was to be a musical evocation of Easter, the most joyous of Christian holidays, as it was celebrated in Russia, and Rimsky built the music on liturgical chants and melodies from the Orthodox Church. But he identified another, much older element with the celebrations as well: a strong streak of the pagan. Describing his intentions, he wrote, “This legendary and heathen side of the holiday, this transition from the gloomy and mysterious evening of Passion Saturday to the unbridled pagan-religious merry-making on the morning of Easter Sunday, is what I was eager to reproduce in my Overture.”The result, which has been called a “mosaic,” is assembled of brilliant bits of musical color. Though Rimsky writes for a large orchestra, he uses its components with

discrimination. The music alternates delicate instrumental cadenzas with the rousing tutti passages, as the old liturgical chants roar out with an unexpected power. This orchestral showpiece may have its roots in liturgical music, but it approaches the pagan in its sensual energy. Rimsky, who said that a full appreciation of this music demanded that a hearer have attended a Russian Easter service “in a cathedral thronged with people from every walk of life,” dedicated the music to the memory of his friends Mussorgsky and Borodin, both of whom had died unexpectedly in the years just before its composition.
