The amount of $1,656 was sent to the St. Mary’s Church in Red Lake from the fundraising done at St. Peter’s Church. We received the following acknowledgement:

“On behalf of Fr. Jerry Rogers and the parishioners of St.

Mary’s Mission, thank you for your gift to us. You are

most generous and we are most grateful. The outreach,

prayers, and support have been overwhelming at this time

and we are so grateful. You are in our prayers. A Blessed

Lenten Season, Fr. Jerry Rogers, Sr. Patrice Eblen, and

Patti Spry”

Fr. Tom’s Desk We have arrived at the third week of Lent. How’s your lenten spiritual journey going? As a time of reflection on the things in our lives that need refurbishing through the actions of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, our first reading from Exodus this Sunday is a good starting place for that reflection. The basic questions that arise from the Ten Commandments are: “What is my relationship with God?” and “What is my relationship with neighbor?” Jesus himself uses the commandments to ground his teaching. Although supplanted by the Law of Love, the commandments are a worthy starting point for lenten reflection. Although 3200 years old, they still offer us a moral compass guiding our journey toward the Kingdom. A couple people have asked me recently if I knew anything about the “new translation” of the Lord’s Prayer. They are referring to an observation made by Pope Francis several weeks ago, in which he said that sometimes our translations are misleading and cause confusion, rather than bolster the faith, and that it is okay to render new translations. The phrase that is being questioned is this: “and lead us not into temptation.” The problem: why would God lead us into temptation to begin with? God only leads to holiness and goodness. And so there is a proposal to change this phrase to “do not let us enter into temptation” which is all about asking God to rescue us from our sinfulness. This follows the pattern of the embolism the priest recites when the congregation has finished; “Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil… that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin…” Do you see the subtle change? Remember language evolves and is powerful. To date only a few European countries have adapted the change for liturgical use. What do you think? Did you know that in the Roman Empire the month of March was the first month of the calendar year? It was dedicated to Mars, the god of war (doing battle with the forces of winter bringing in the season of spring - spring equinox).

Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner St. Peter’s Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner on Saturday, March 17. Social hour at 6:00 pm & Dinner at 6:30 pm. Free will offering will be accepted. RSVP to the church office by Monday, March 12. All are welcome!

Oil for your Lamp “Stop making my Father’s house a market place!” Jesus uses these words as he cleans house with a whip. As I reflect on these words, I remember that just a few short weeks ago we heard that our bodies are temples of the Lord. That we are to go to an inner room, close the door and pray to our Father in secret, and what our Father sees in secret he will listen to. In our consumer driven world, our minds and bodies get overloaded with all the things of the world. Addictions to food, money, power, tobacco, drugs, alcohol, pornography; cellular phones have become major players in our lives; they are used for everything under the sun, (did you know some people even actually use them to talk to another person)! What would happen in your life if you were to allow Jesus in and he cleaned your heart of the things of the world? If Jesus took a whip and drove out all the things of the world that have a grip on your heart; would you be able to give him praise, or would you instead fall to pieces? Lent has always been a time to allow the Lord into our hearts and give them a good “spring” cleaning, why not allow him in and drive out the things that have taken over the temple of your body? “To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.”

Faith, Wellness, and You March is National Kidney Month. Kidneys are very important in keeping you healthy. They regulate fluid levels, activate vitamin D for healthy bones, filter wastes from the blood, directs production of red blood cells, regulate blood pressure, and keep blood minerals in balance. There are several problems kidney disease can cause. These include: cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, weak bones, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney failure, and anemia (low red blood cell count). Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, over 60 years of age, and family history. Some symptoms of kidney disease include swelling (face, hands, abdomen, ankles, and feet), blood in urine, puffy eyes, difficult/painful urination, increased thirst, and fatigue. Did you know…? There are two tests that can evaluate your kidney function. These include: a urine test that estimates the amount of a protein excreted in your urine, and a blood test that tells how well your kidneys are working to remove wastes from your blood. You can contact your parish nurse at: Diane: 218-255-1270 and Tiffany at 218-252-8227.
