COFFEE WITH OUR PASTOR

Today, Sunday, 1/15/17 after 9am Mass in Drexel Hall (Cafeteria).

Sunday, January 15, 2017

ONE MINUTE EACH NIGHT

In World War II, there was an advisor to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace. This had an amazing effect as bombing stopped. There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America. The United States of America and our citizens need prayer.

If you would like to participate: each evening at 4:00 PM Eastern Time stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, peace in the world, and that Chris-tianity will grow in the United States. It has been said if people really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we would be speechless and amazed. Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have.

The Knights of the Holy Temple

is a group specifically for young men of high school age. The purpose is to provide them an

opportunity to contribute to parish life in a meaningful manner. Additionally, the Knights afford young men an opportunity to delve more deeply

into Truths of the Christian Faith and attend to their own spiritual formation. Watch this Bulletin space for

more info. to come in this new year 2017.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a U.S. Federal Holiday in 1986. Martin Luther King Jr. (right with Nobel Peace Prize) was born Michael King, Jr., Jan. 15, 1929 and assassinated April 4, 1968. A Southern Baptist minister and activist, he led the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and advanced civil rights by using nonvio-lent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs/principles. King early in his career led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and in 1957 helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) as its first president. With the SCLC, King led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia (the Albany Movement); in 1963 helped organize nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama; and, in 1963 helped organize the March on Washington famous for his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he established himself as one of the great-est orators in American history. In October 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality with nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, and in 1966 he and SCLC took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In the final years of life, King expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty and the Vietnam War, alienating many liberal allies in 1967 with a speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". In 1968, King planed a national Poor People's Campaign to occupy Washington, D.C. but was assassinated April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Martin Luther King, Jr. 1929– 1968

King posthumously was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in 2011. His resting place (below).

Vocations

The word vocation comes from the Latin word “vocare”

which means “to call”.

Throughout history, God has called His people. As members

of God’s people, we believe He calls us too. God made us and He knows why He did so. God has a plan for our lives.

His plan is our vocation.
