From Pastor Randy…

14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth. (Ps. 104:14 ESV)

Gardeners almost always talk with each other about their gardens. You can tell someone who is new to gardening as they have a tendency to brag more about their efforts. Those that have been at it for a while talk more about the things they have tried that worked and the things they have tried that didn’t work. Sadly there are often more that didn’t work, but we keep trying. What you learn over time is that even with the best of our efforts, we are not in control of all that goes on in the garden. We can weed the garden, spray for bugs, try to plant at the right time, amend the soil as best we can, and water as frequently as we deem necessary, but even if we do all those things right it doesn’t always guarantee healthy plants or a fruitful harvest. There is an old adage that says “A bad gardener grows bad plants, a good gardener grows good plants, but a great gardener grows good soil”. But there is one thing that is way out of our ability to control in the garden, the weather. I do a lot of praying over the weather. I do that because I realize who controls it and that I do not. Just to give you an example of how much the weather makes a difference consider the most recent rain. I water the garden on a regular basis trying to follow all the rules and suggestions about watering that I can remember. Due to the lack of rain I water a little in the yard but know from observing that my efforts make little if any difference. But let God send rain and the plants respond so well that it is miraculous. The corn is reaching higher, the tomatoes are growing bigger, and the

St. John’s Lutheran Church, We want to thank Pastor Randy for sending the Worship Guide to us so we may continue to worship with you until our concerns for the COVID-19 virus infecting us are eased. We are both old and very vulnerable with low immune systems. Keep up the good works, Dave & Dorothy Hennig “For where two or more are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” ~Matthew 28:20 gives us hope that God will understand our at home worship.

grass is not just a bright green but is also filling out and needs mowing more often. God does great work. And I wonder if we would grow as well if we allowed God to reign in our lives each day. Imagine if we followed God’s way in all that we do. (OK, how about in at least 80% of what we do?) What if we lived our lives watching for God to reign on us as God rained on the grass. I can’t help but think that we too would green up, stand up, and spread out from the gift. With God’s lead and God’s grace our lives would be richer. We would stand in such a way that the smiles on our face would make others notice. We would more likely reach out to others a little more frequently, spreading our thanks to God further into our realm of influence in the world. We would be like good soil grown by the master gardener and bear fruit worthy of His efforts. And we would do this because we know that in reality God is in charge even if we often like to pretend we are. If we therefore grow in God’s garden I wonder what He tells others about His plants. Does He brag about the strength and condition of his plants – or does He lament that He has done all He can do and the rest is up to us? God’s Peace, Pastor Randy

12 And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing. (Ezek. 47:12 ESV)
