Gary was born and raised in Arizona. He enjoyed his childhood and spent a lot of time outdoors. He learned to work on the family farm, liked to hunt and fish with his brother, and loved to go swimming in the Colorado River. “It was so hot, 110, 120 degrees. But it didn’t bother us as kids. We’d ger sunburned and baked, but we just didn’t care. It was a lot of fun.” When he got a bit older, he and his friends often made the 3-hour trip to San Diego. “We would go and sleep overnight on the beach in the summer. Good times there.” Gary met his wife Janice through her brother Bruce. They were married for 52 years before she passed away. After they were married, Gary moved his young family to Ohio for work as a field auditor for Firestone Tire Company. He was responsible for several stores and did a lot of traveling. “It was hard at times, but it was a good job.” Gary and Janice had 5 children. Gary is very proud of all of them. He served in the Army for 2 years during the Korean War. Gary loves fishing, reading and dogs. When asked about the most important thing he had learned in his life, Gary quickly replied’” My main thrust has always been honesty. My Dad was a real honest man, and I learned that was an important trait from an early age.” We are glad you are a part of our Abbington Family Gary!!

Irish Barmbrack Cake

"Barmbrack is a traditional Irish cake eaten on holidays. After pouring into the prepared pan, it is tradition to add objects to the barmbrack which symbolize certain things for the person who receives each in their slice: coin-wealth or good fortune; ring-will marry within the year; bean-poverty; pea-will not marry within the year; matchstick-unhappy marriage; thimble-single for life." Recipe by Brooke Elizabeth allrecipies.com 2 ½ c chopped mixed dried fruit 1 ½ c hot ginger herbal tea 2 ½ c flour 1 t. cinnamon ½ t. nutmeg ½ t. baking soda 1 egg 1 ½ c sugar ¼ c lemon marmalade 1 t. grated orange zest Soak the dried fruit in the hot tea for 2 hours, then drain. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch Bundt pan. Stir together the flour cinnamon, nutmeg, and baking soda; set aside. Beat the egg, sugar, marmalade, orange zest, and tea-soaked fruit until well combined. Gently fold in the flour until just combined, then pour into the prepared Bundt pan. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour or until the top of the cake springs back when lightly pressed. Allow to cool in the pan for 2 hours before removing. Continue to cool to room temperature on a wire rack. Press the objects of choice into the cake through the bottom before serving.
