Page Two SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2018 - TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY
The third set of mysteries of the rosary is the sorrowful mysteries. We experi-
ence sorrow because we remember how much Jesus suffered at the hands of sin-
ners. We are saddened, too, because we know we are the reason for the suffering
of Jesus. He suffered because of our sins. He suffered so much to save us from
our sins. He suffered because He accepted the suffering that you and I deserve
because of our sins. These truths come to mind as we reflect on the sorrowful
mysteries.
The first sorrowful mystery is the Agony in the Garden. In the Garden as He prayed, Jesus could foresee how terribly
He would suffer. He prayed that the Father would spare Him from the suffering. He accepted the suffering for love
you and me. We are sorry for what our sins did to Jesus.
The second sorrowful mystery is the Scourging at the Pillar. Jesus suffered terribly due to the whipping that He re-
ceived at the hands of the soldiers. The tips of the whip had pieces of metal and bone that dug into the flesh of His
body. The tearing exposed His ribs. How Jesus suffered for us! We are sorry that He had to suffer for my sins and
yours.
The third sorrowful mystery is the Crowning with Thorns. A bundle of long thorns was dropped onto and pressed into
the skull of Jesus. How He suffered for us! We are sorry that He needed to suffer on account of our sins. How much
He loves us!
The fourth sorrowful mystery is the carrying of the cross. Jesus suffered terribly as He carried the cross because His
heavy cross pressed hard on the shredded flesh of His shoulder. How much He suffered! How much He loves you and
me!
The fifth sorrowful mystery is the crucifixion and death of the Lord. We remember how much Jesus suffered as He lost
blood on the cross. Likewise, He struggled to breathe because of the way that He hung on the cross. He suffered a hor-
rible death for you and for me. He would not abandon us because His love for us is so great. He wants us to enjoy
eternal life with Him in heaven.
The five sorrowful mysteries touch our hearts with the Love of God that was shown during the Passion of Jesus. We
experience sorrow because we know that our sins caused the suffering of Jesus. We experience an incredible gratitude
as we recall all that Jesus did to save us.
PRAYING FOR OTHERS
On Tuesday, October 23, Andre Lesperance will lead an evening workshop on “Praying with and for Others.” Some of
the questions that will be addressed are:
• Do you ever say “I’ll pray for you” without following through?
• Do you ever doubt that your prayers make a difference?
• Do you wonder how your ministry or leadership team can pray together more effectively for others?
The session will be enlightening, energizing and interactive. Why not plan to join us. Pizza will be available as will
child care. October 23 at 7 pm in the Church Hall. All are welcome!
God bless.

TITHING IS GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING.
Biblically a tithe means 10%. All are asked to consider
tithing and return 10% of our income to the Lord (5% to
the parish, 5% to God’s other charities) in gratitude. The
spiritual practice of tithing disposes us to make God first
in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the
tithe, but the tither. Not the gift, but the giver — for God!
Tithing Income October 14, 2018 $11,859.00
Tithing Income October 15, 2017 $10,240.00
REFLECTION: “For the Son of Man did not come to
be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom
for many.” MARK 10:45
If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s
love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try
changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you
God for everything You have given me. I have enough to
share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy
through service to others.
FROM FATHER NICK: “Thank you for your faithful-
ness and sacrifices. May the Lord bless you for your gen-
erosity!”
A TESTIMONY FROM A PARISHIONER OF ST.
HELENA PARISH IN BLUE BELL, PA: “As a new
couple in the parish, we found the tithing packet most
informative. We are thankful for all the blessings from
God and feel honored to be giving Him something in re-
turn.”
TOO MUCH INFORMATION!
There is a common expression: “Too much information!”
We usually use it when people tell us details about their
lives that we don’t want or need to know. Today, when
James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their
request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple an-
swer might have been in order. Instead, as He often does,
Jesus answers a question with a question; today it’s about
drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are
indignant over James and John’s outrageous request, He
proceeds to give them what may have been “too much
information” for followers who were simply interested in
the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can
sometimes seem “too much” for us, is essential for our
lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark to-
day, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weak-
ness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to
understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to
find our place and come to be honored in the reign of
God.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — My servant shall justify many and their
guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11).
Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our
trust in you (Psalm 33).
Second Reading — Let us confidently approach the
throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for
timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16).
Gospel — Whoever wishes to be first among you will be
the slave of all (Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]).
