Sunday, October 30th
This next Sunday, October 30th we will be having our worship service at Fox and Lake. Classes will be nor-mal except they will end a little early to allow ample time for us to make our way over to Fox and Lake. Sunday night services will also be at Fox and Lake for 5th Sunday Singing with an Ice Cream So-cial to follow. Please bring your favorite ice cream or desert and join us. If you are wondering about your normal contribution, please use either one of the elec-tronic methods or catch up on your contribution the following Sunday or you can place your contribution in an envelope and give it to one of us elders. If you are moved by the Spirit to leave a contribution for Fox and Lake, I'm sure they would appreciate the generosity to-wards their own expenses.
We truly encourage your attendance this Sunday as a show of solidarity for the Churches of Christ in Carls-bad!

Four Ways Envy Damages Your Life
“Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder (unrest, rebellion) and every evil thing” (James 3:16a AMP).
The number one thing that holds you back from God’s purpose and mission for your life is a very subtle sin. It’s not lust or pride or anger.
It’s not worry or fear or discouragement. In fact, you would proba-bly never even think of it because it is so insidious we don’t real-ize its damaging effect on our lives.
It’s envy.
When you envy other people, you are so fixated on what you don’t have and what you are not that you totally miss God’s plan for you.
You need to understand the four ways envy damages your life so that you can eliminate it from your life.
Envy denies your uniqueness. Psalm 139:13-16 says, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb …. Your workmanship is marvelous .... You watched me as I was ... woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed” (NLT, second edition). Envy blinds you to your own gift-edness and uniqueness. But God didn’t make you to be like some-body else. God made you to be you.
Envy divides your attention. You cannot follow God’s purpose and focus on other people at the same time. You get a divided allegiance, and then you don’t get anything done in your life. Je-sus says in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to mon-ey.”
Envy wastes your time and energy. Ecclesiastes 4:4-8 says, “I have also learned why people work so hard to succeed: it is be-cause they envy the things their neighbors have. But it is useless. It is like chasing the wind .... Here is someone who lives alone. He has no son, no brother, yet he is always working, never satisfied with the wealth he has. For whom is he working so hard ...? This is useless, too — and a miserable way to live” (GNT).
Envy leads to every other sin. Envy can destroy everything and everyone around you. The Bible says, “Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder (unrest, rebellion) and every evil thing” (James 3:16a AMP). At the heart of the problem is a prob-lem of the heart. Envy is a heart problem. Any time you envy you have gotten your worship misguided, because envy is a form of worship. It says, “I desire that. I want that. I love that. I want to live for that.” That’s called worship. And any time that item is not God, it becomes an idol. If you’re going to eliminate envy, you have to ask, “What am I worshiping? Am I worshiping God and his grace in my life? Or am I worshiping what I want from other people?”
Think about it…
In what small ways have you let envy creep into your heart? What have been the larger effects?
What can you acknowledge about yourself that will help you stop envy from blinding you to your giftedness?
How does your view of envy change when you consider that it is a form of idol worship?

Wake Up!
This past week, my family has been
blessed by a visit from our cousins
from North Carolina. We have tak-
en them to the local museum, driven
them around town to show them our
sights, and we’ve shared things of
interest from our town. One after-
noon, we stopped and let the kids
walk down at the beach. We took the time to play in the
sand, touch the water, and watch the geese and ducks as
they swam in formation. As we watched the kids enjoying
themselves so much, my cousin asked if I brought them
there often. I took a moment to realize that this may
have been Koen’s first time at the beach – and she is two
years old.
How often do we find ourselves surrounded by beauty, but
living completely in the darkness that we have created for
ourselves? I find myself frustrated by the rut I’ve created
in my life, and I can’t seem to escape it; sometimes I’m
not even sure if I want to escape it. Yet, a new perspec-
tive wakes me up from the fog that I am living in. When I
allow myself to live in the dark, to live in that comfortable
rut, to live in the fog of life, I need someone to come in,
shake me, and wake me up to all that I am missing.
God sent many prophets to His people when they needed
to be shaken up, awakened from their spiritual sleep, and
brought back to His side again. My cousins helped me to
open my eyes to all that I had been missing. They helped
me to realize that there are many things in my life that I
have grown comfortable with, and I needed to see with
new eyes.
I believe that God has sent Sunset the Weatherfords for
much the same reason. Charlie’s lesson Sunday made me
realize that I have grown comfortable with our little
church family. I have found myself in a rut. My eyes
have been closed to all those in Carlsbad who need us,
who need Christ. I feel as if I have been shaken up,
awakened to all that I have been missing. I believe its
time for us to open our eyes to all that is going on in our
own little place here in Carlsbad, and let’s go out and
share Christ right here. Let’s be open to seeing our com-
munity with new eyes. Will you join me in going out into
our community, working together to spread the good
news, and allowing God’s light to shine through us in a
way that we haven’t in a long time? I don’t want to waste
any more time in the darkness, the rut, or the fog of life
that I have allowed for way too long.
Let’s wake up, and share God’s love in this place!
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great
light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a
new light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2
