SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday’s Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John’s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so “that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that “[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God” (5:1)—what we might refer to as being “born again.” Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. ORIGINS OF DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

St. Maria Faustina Kowalska of the Most Blessed Sacrament, commonly known as Saint Faustina, was born in Glogowiec, Poland, on August 25, 1905. The third of ten children from a poor family, Saint Faustina had little formal education, because she had to work to support her family. Having discerned a vocation at a young age (even before making her First Communion), she applied to various convents in Warsaw and was finally accepted by the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy on August 1, 1925. On April 30, 1926, she became an initiate, and remained with the Sister of Our Lady of Mercy for the rest of her life.

On Good Friday 1937, Christ appeared to Saint Faustina and dictated to her the prayers that He wished her to pray in a novena from Good Fri-

day through the Octave of Easter, now known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

These prayers seem intended primarily for her private use, but the novena has become very popular. It is often combined with the Divine

Mercy Chaplet, which can also be prayed throughout the year. (Saint Faustina especially

recommended that the chaplet be prayed on Fridays at 3:00 pm, to commemorate the

Death of Christ on the Cross.)

God, of your goodness

give me yourself, for you

are enough for me. And

only in you do I have

everything.

THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD The feast of the Annunciation of the Lord celebrates Angel Gabriel's ap-pearance to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-38) and his announcement that she had been chosen to be the mother of the savior of the world. Also being celebrated during this feast was Mary's fiat, which means "let it be" in Latin—her willing acceptance of the news.

The Annunciation, which means "the announce-ment," is observed almost universally throughout Christianity, especially within Orthodoxy, Angli-canism, Catholicism, and Lutheranism. The date of

the feast, which is determined by the date of Christmas, is nine months prior to Christmas.

This date was set by the seventh century.

del apo stol Toma s: “Sen or mí o y Dios mí o”.
