School Open House – Catholic Schools Week

This past week was a wonderful week here at St. Juliana. Well, except for that whole blizzard thing. That is unless you really like snow. Last Sunday we began our kickoff of the annual Catholic Schools Week with a special celebration of our school at the noon Mass and an open house at the school. We had a great turnout. Throughout the week there were many celebrations at the school to recognize the quality of our school and the tremendous skills and dedication of our staff and many volunteers, the amazing gift of the families that make up our school, and the blessing of the students who are the very reason we run this im-portant ministry. Although there were many highlights and I could not even begin to list them all I would like to mention a couple of things that stand out. First on Sunday at the noon Mass the annual Sr. Remy Schaul award was given for dedicated volunteer service. This is a difficult award to give because there are so many deserving candidates. This year’s recipient was John Pelrine. He has certainly used his skills and talents to make St. Juliana a better place. Our present Scoutmaster, he has helped develop our troop to be a place where the boys can truly grow in wisdom, age and grace. Besides working with the students, John has served on the parish pastoral council, and is presently serving on the parish finance coun-cil. John is a man of faith and a great role model to the boys he helps guide. Congratulations John and thank you for your service. Another group which played a big role during the week was the school board. This is a group that I think doesn’t get all the credit they deserve. In my six years here I think we have been blessed with excellent school boards. They have come up with some great ideas and work very hard to make those ideas happen. They are directly responsible for helping make our school more welcoming and the kind of place that attracts families and students. Furthermore, while the meetings involve a lot of hard work, there is also a spirit of support and coop-eration among the members which make the meetings generally fun and enjoy-able (now how often do you hear that said about meetings?). Obviously during my time here some members of the board have finished their terms and others have come aboard but the quality of this group has remained very high. To the members of the school board, thank you for all you have done for the school. The generous support of parishioners shows how much people here appreciate the gift of this school. So I also want to thank the many people here who sup-port the school financially and in so many other ways. I hope you are proud of this important ministry. I ask that you continue to pray for our school ministry. No person or institution in this world is perfect so we need God’s strength and wisdom to continue to improve and address with honesty any of our shortcom-ings. Ask God to guide us in His way as we constantly seek ways to be a better Catholic School.

Light and Warmth Is winter hard to endure because it’s dark or because it’s cold? In the dark, we can’t see and easily become disoriented. In the cold, we can’t grow or live. People need light and they need warmth. Disciples of Jesus need faith to see what physical eyes alone cannot dis-cern, and they need charity, love that gives supernatural life that lasts forever. Our souls are sometimes in winter, uncertain about what they believe and isolated from God’s love. Then we yearn for the spring-time. Remembering God’s goodness to us in the past, we know the spring will come and, with it, light and warmth.

Francis Cardinal George, OMI

Feast of Faith - The Gloria (1) The Gloria, or Glory to God, follows the penitential rite. Both are acts of praise. In the penitential rite, we sing of the mercy of Christ. In the Gloria we praise God’s saving action in the universe. The Gloria is a relatively late addition to the Mass. It first appeared in the Roman liturgy in the sixth century, and then it was sung only by the pope—and only on Christmas! With time, the hymn came to be sung by bishops on major feasts, and then by priests; finally, it became the song of the entire assembly. With the ad-vent of more elaborate musical settings, the people gradually stopped singing the Gloria, until this song of the people became the exclusive domain of the priest and the choir. But the liturgical reforms have restored it to its place as primarily the song of the assembly. The language of the Gloria echoes the New Testament canticles. It may be begun by the priest, the cantor, and the entire assembly in varied combinations. The Gloria is sometimes called the “greater doxology,” and in some ways it is like an extended, ecstatic version of the familiar doxology (“Glory be to the Father”) prayed in the Divine Office and the rosary.

2011 Archdiocesan annual Catholic Appeal Begins Please Respond Generously to Cardinal George’s Letter

The theme of the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal is “…seek first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus taught that we are not to worry about the things of this world. Rather, we are to seek the kingdom of God and the Father will reward us. God provides all that we have and all that we are. Stewardship, in part, is the recognition of God’s gifts and the obligation to return a significant portion of our gifts to assist in his work. Our gifts to our parish, to our Archdio-cese and the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for what God has given us. A gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services, and ministry to thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese. The Appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education to chil-dren, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. It is also one of the largest philanthropic sources of financial support for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. The Appeal also funds services that are of great help to the minis-tries here in our parish. For example, Appeal funds support: • Recruitment, education and formation of lay ministers and deacons • Continuing education and ongoing spiritual formation of priests • Ministries of care and comfort to those in need • Elizabeth Ministry Also, when our parish reaches its goal of $55,091 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. Please make a significant pledge to the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal.
