Habari Rafiki!Dear friends and People of Faith at St Matthews;I am so blessed and honored by your faith and commitment of calling me back to serve with you at this church I love and dare to call my second home; far from home in Tanzania (East Africa). My family and I are blessed and happy to be able to come back to St Matthew’s to serve together with you in the call that God has given us to do (though only for a 25% of my ministry time). It feels really good to be able to re-connect with you again after serving here as a Missionary Pastor from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania- Diocese of Meru to the Greater Milwaukee Synod of ELCA from July 2003 – June 2004; and again from July 2005- November 2005. St Matthew’s has always been in our hearts and thoughts because this is where we were truly welcomed, received, accepted and met so many people who eventually became friends indeed and from their hearts. So, I thank you and thank God that I am back to where my ministry started while in America. I am looking forward to serving you with all my heart and ability. I pray and hope that with the help of God, I can be of great help in reinforcing the beams of friendships and partnership between our partners - Sing’isi Parish in Tanzania and our great church here - St Matthew’s - Greater Milwaukee Synod; including many other pastoral duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor or Church Council. Just for your information for those who don’t remember me or were not at St. Matthew’s the time I served here as a South/North Missionary pastor; I studied theology in Tanzania at Makumira Theological Seminary; was then ordained as a pastor in January, 1984 - in what was then known as the Northern Diocese in Moshi- Kilimanjaro. I did serve a couple of parishes until I was elected to be the Dean (District Pastor of the Meru District- which is the Diocese of Meru at present) in 1988.

In June 1992, the Meru District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania was made to be a dependant Diocese; and I was elected the Assistant to the Bishop; until July 2003, when the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, asked to be their first Missionary pastor to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, serving churches in the Greater Milwaukee Synod; of which my first church home was St. Matthew’s in Wauwatosa. This was a two year special project; and when the contract was concluded, I continued serving St. Matthew’s and St John’s (Jackson) for six extra months; until I was called as an Associate Pastor at Galilee Lutheran Church in Pewaukee - a place I served for 6.5 years.

This August, I transitioned and was called to serve at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Racine -75% time and St. Matthew’s- 25%. I am so excited and looking forward to serving with all of you for the next year!In the Bible, St. John writes: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father…” - John 15: 13-15 Rafiki (Your Friend); Pastor Elias

This year we will kick off adult education with a Ministry Fair in the Commons. This is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the ministries of St. Matthew’s and to get to know leaders who are making so many great things happen. Sunday School Starts September 9th Sunday School begins this year on September 9th with a Rally Day celebration at the 8:30 service. CIA’s 2012 Clean Up for ReformationDate is Saturday, September 22Do you have items to donate? Saturday, September 22 is the date for our annual Clean Up for The Neighborhood Store at Reformation Church. Furniture is our main objective, but we will also pick up appliances, area rugs (rolled and tied), dishes (well packed), and lamps. We’ll collect anything that could help make a house a home. It needs to be in clean, working condition. We also ask that your donations be of the quality you would consider using. To assist with the cost of trucks, a minimum donation of $5 is appreciated. If you have questions or would like to schedule a pick-up, please contact Erin Margerie at 414-254-5029 or [email protected]. In order to reserve the appropriate number of trucks, we are asking that you call by Saturday, September 15 to schedule a pick-up. When calling, please indicate if your donation will require the use of a moving truck or a minivan. We are also looking for help to unload the trucks at Reformation (around 1-2pm). If you are interested in helping, please contact Tom or Emily Wanezek 414-476-8175 or [email protected]. What is CIA? CIA (Christians in Action) is a small group at St. Matthew’s that has done various types of service and study through their years together They created this project many years ago. It has been greatly appreciated by both the people with donations to be transported as well as the workers and shoppers at the Neighborhood Store. The members of the group are Paul & Danette Braun, Tim & Dara Greene, Erin & Paul Margerie, Tom & Emily Wanezek, and Teresa and Ethan Wooster.

Karibu (Welcome) Tanzania Visitors! September 17th – October 3rd St. Matthew’s will once again have the good fortune to welcome guests from Tanzania. This time we have two people coming: Esther Kitomari and Benson Pallangyo. Both are very involved in the partnership on the Tanzania side of our relationship and have been good friends to the delegates who have visited there in the three times we traveled to Tanzania. They will arrive with a delegation from the our Synod’s sister synod this September and will be with us for two weeks. We are looking forward to hosting them in our homes and community, and show them the same hospitality and welcome that they have lavished upon us during our stay with them. If you would like to join us for special activities, we will have other ways listed for you to participate – such as coming along on field trip days to Wauwatosa, Milwaukee and Chicago or hosting them at a small group gathering. Let Pastor Chris know of your interest in joining us on these activities – you are more than welcome! Three important Meals for you to participate in… • First is a Welcome Dinner on Wednesday, September

19th from 5:30-6:30pm. We will welcome our guests to St. Matthew’s with a wonderful meal together. Join us that evening for a traditional Wisconsin tailgate food – brats, hamburgers and hotdogs, along with all of the traditional tailgate side foods. Cost will be $5.00 per person and we ask you to sign up in the church office to know how many will be coming. Please join us and help welcome our guests.

• Second, on Saturday, Sept 22nd, at our Fall “Rise with the Guys” Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. after our usual breakfast and sharing time, Pastor Elias Kitoi will moderate a discussion and sharing with our two guests to talk about Tanzania and their lives there. Friends are always encouraged and welcome!

• Third, on their last Sunday with us, September 30th, we will feature Esther and Benson in worship and have them talk about Tanzania at the Adult Education time. Following the 11:00 service we will share a farewell meal, as our guests prepare to leave and head back to Tanzania. Please join us at a farewell luncheon as we wish a safe journey and conclude our time together.

Men’s Breakfast has International Flavor, September 22nd On Saturday September 22nd, 7:30am–9:00am, our Men’s Ministry will once again host a wonderful breakfast – “Rise with the Guys.” The focus of this breakfast will be to welcome our Tanzanian guests who are visiting for two weeks, and hear about life and faith in Arusha, Tanzania. The Fall Hunger Emphasis leads to The Big Fall Weekend - October 20-21

Page 7

Church-wide Hunger Emphasis in October includes various opportunities to learn about the politics of hunger

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chose: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke. Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-when you see the naked to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood.”

The prophet Isaiah’s proclamation of God’s concern for the poor. (Ch. 58 vs. 6) Jesus lives out these words with his ministry and a focus on justice for those in need. This certainly includes the poor and the hungry. As His people we are called to respond. Increase your awareness of the progress the world had made against hunger and poverty and the ways in which we can make a difference. Get involved this October with St. Matthew’s as we journey towards ending hunger. Here are the ways we will offer education, learn to advocate and get busy serving: > Learn about the Biblical

emphasis on hunger in Sunday morning worship and adult education.

> Read Exodus From Hunger: We Are Called to Change the Politics of Hunger by David Beckmann; president of Bread for the World. Small groups will be formed to discuss the book in October. Pick up a copy of the book at The Welcome Center and start reading now! Or go to www.exodusfromhunger.org for more information.

> Lead a small group for 3 weeks as we discuss this book. A discussion guide and training is provided. The more leaders we have, the more small groups we can have!!!

> Help at the Food Packing Event the weekend of October 20th

> Purchase something from the vendors or volunteer your time for the Sustainability Fair October 20th

> Write a letter to our representatives during the Bread for the World Letter Writing on October 20th

> Come to the Hunger Banquet, an event designed to raise awareness and allow us to experience firsthand how our decisions affect the rest of the world.

> View a thought-provoking movie during Films on Friday at St. Matthew’s on September 28th

Food Packing and Sustainability Fair - October 20 and 21St. Matthew’s to Host Food Packing Event in October During the weekend of October 20-21, Fellowship Hall will look more like a food packing assembly line as we work together to package 100,000 nutritionally fortified meals for hungry children. We are excited to host another large food packing event, similar to the one we had three years ago, where people of all ages can have a hands-on role in helping alleviate hunger for people who are chronically undernourished. Save the date now, and watch future issues of the Voice for details and sign up information.

Sustainability Fair to be part of an exciting weekend at St. Matthew’s focused on hunger This year St Matthew’s Sustainability Fair will take place on Saturday, October 20, the same day that we will be doing food packing. While we had hoped to keep our focus on food this year we are not able to set up the winter farmers market. Instead we will have our traditional Fair Trade Vendors, bake sale, jam, honey, chocolate, coffee and Sustainable Crafters. New this year will be gluten free deserts and the Be-Green shop from the village. Other vendors are also being sought. A special “local” lunch will be served. All money raised from the fair will be used to support our Meal Outreach Ministry. Save the date to come pack, shop and eat.

Sustainable Crafters prepare for October Fair - Come “craft” with us! Sustainable crafters will meet the third week of each month at 11:00, September 19, and October 17. You’re welcome to attend, either to work on projects created or to share your own ideas! We will soon be loading the loom to begin weaving material for some special projects. More information to come. If you’re interested in getting involved in weaving, you may want to get involved.

Online Church Directory to include all members, Oct. 1Now is your opportunity to ‘opt out’ of online inclusion Our online photo directory continues to be well-used by members of our congregation. The directory has photos of many of our members, as well as a listing of those with photos with their names and addresses. Many have expressed their need to access all of our membership’s addresses and phone numbers for things like switching assistant duties, planning events, connecting over shared interests, etc. Therefore we will include the entire directory online beginning October 1st. If you wish to be excluded fron this online directory, please contact the church office. Printed directories are being made available in the church office for those without online access. Call ahead to make sure an extra copy is available.

New Website to be revealed this month We are excited to share the news that a new website for St. Matthew’s Church is planned to be in use by Rally Day. This redesigned website will have a new layout with a simplified menu approach to navigation. We are working with a local design firm, Norman Design, which has created a new look and format. Our website has become an important tool for sharing information about St. Matthew’s with its members as well as those people searching for a church. Under the leadership of Lee Meyerpeter, the website grew steadily in usage. Lee has decided it was time to give up the time-consuming tasks involved in updating the website, leading us to this change. While some of the features of the new website will become active within a few weeks or months, the improvements we plan will be prayer request opportunities, a donation tab, online forms, uniform staff email addresses, and compatibility with mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet devices. Accessing past copies of the Voice newsletter and Sunday bulletin announcements will stay the same. There will be the photo gallery and podcasts as in the past. Other features will be added as needs arise.

Thanks to the committee who has collaborated on this project: Danette Braun, Heidi Fendos, Bob Haglund, Donna McAllister, Pr. Chris Manke and Sonja Mohr.

Uniform Email Addresses Now Available for all Staff Members One of the goals of our improvements in our communications ministry has been to add consistently formulated email addresses. These addresses are now in use for our staff members.

People willing to lead a small group for 3 weeks are needed! Discussion questions and training will be provided! Please contact [email protected] to lead a group.

Small Group Leaders Needed! Why people say they can’t lead a small group…· “I don’t know enough about the Bible”· “I’m not the ‘leader-type’”· “I don’t have enough time”· “I won’t have all the answers” Why many people could lead a small group… · You don’t have to be a Bible expert - you just need

to have a desire to learn · Caring people who like to develop relationships

make the best small group leaders · Most small group commitments are 4 weeks

or less · Listening is far more important than talk-

ing when you are leading a small group If you think you’d like to try to lead a small group now is the perfect time. We are looking for leaders. Training and support will be provided. Just bring your sense of humor and desire to grow!

Often in discussing this issue, the conversation quickly turns to: “So how many rooms do we need? “ The answer is simple: as many as we can get. The problem however is that the solution isn’t that easy, because as we all know, St. Matthew’s is landlocked with little room to expand. Because of this challenge the committee and staff have had all sorts of interesting and sometimes extreme discussions, coming up with solutions that we’ve opted not to move towards – for good reasons. On top of the basic idea of having more meeting space available to us, is the desire to improve our current locations. With much of our building having been constructed in a past era, many of our meeting locations are becoming outdated in design and function. Reviewing the various rooms for appearance, comfort, flooring, sound, lighting and equipment is something that we are examining as well. The current master plan conceptual design also has several ideas for converting current underutilized space into classrooms (such as transforming the stage into a meeting room, and repurposing space in the lower commons near the Youth Room). Good stewardship is always important, and one way we will seek to accomplish this, besides good design and implementation, is keeping in mind that much of our space can have multiple purposes to it, and so thinking outside the box for our rooms can be helpful to accomplish several purposes in one location. Beside all of this, we are also looking at the possibility of additions to St. Matthew’s footprint. With little room to grow, this becomes difficult and costly – but not out of the question. It is something that will probably be proposed to the congregation for its discussions, but due to cost, possibly may have to wait for a second or third phase. As you can see this is a complex issue, but a very important one that the committee takes very seriously. We know that with the combination of repurposing, combining, improving and adding on – our small group gatherings for any purpose will be supported and enhanced. Our Next Issue is #5: Music Ministry Needs

Renovation Needs: Issue #4 –Additional Education Space

This article is the fourth in a series of articles. In each issue of the Voice, we are addressing each of the ten needs for building improvement which were determined through meetings with groups and surveys of the congregation.

The needs already covered are:#1 Upgrading heating, ventilation and air

conditioning#2 Improve Staff Offices#3 Kitchen Modernization#4 Additional Education Space

If you’ve been around St. Matthew’s on a Sunday morning or a Wednesday evening, then you know that we are often scrounging to find places available for small groups to meet. These meetings have a variety of purposes: some are classes such as Sunday School, Confirmation or Adult Education opportunities, and others are meetings for private support groups, counseling or committee meetings. With an exploding population in Sunday School and Confirmation, the space need can be so great, that some groups end up meeting in corners or back hallways, just to be able to have a place. Besides our own ministry needs, because St. Matthew’s is already such a well designed and maintained facility, we are often asked to utilize our space by outside groups. You can imagine the scheduling that goes on trying to meet everyone’s needs, while keeping space requirements such size, sound, feel and amenities in mind.

Adult Education Forum Time on Sunday mornings is held in various locations based on the space needs of other activities such as Sunday School, New Member classes and meetings.

Approximately 300 children are enrolled in St. Matthew’s Sunday School program.

SAINTS Fall Kick-Off“A Potluck of Reminiscing” The story goes like this.....A school teacher asked her class to bring something for “show and tell” that would represent their church. The first little boy said “My name is Levi and I brought this Star of David because I’m Jewish. A little girl named Mary brought a Rosary because she was Catholic. The next boy said “My name is Martin and I’m Lutheran and this is a casserole dish.” If you’ve been Lutheran for some time you may have chuckled because you’ve been to many church potluck dinners and you know the importance of the casserole. Many Lutherans also joke about potluck jello dishes that match the liturgical colors for the season. Early settlers began having meals together at church because the distance many had to drive to get to church necessitated having something to eat at church since there were not places to eat along the way. And the church gatherings were important in providing social and spiritual sharing and caring. And still, today, the church realizes the value of coming together for a meal and time to share and care for each other. Since it is part of the mission of our Older Adult Ministry at St. Matthew’s to provide such opportunities to care and share, our SAINTS Kickoff September gathering will be a Potluck of Reminiscing. Bring a dish to share (homemade or not) and some memories of other church potlucks. Maybe you have a favorite potluck recipe or one of your ancestor’s. If your circumstances make it difficult for you to bring food you might wish to make a small cash donation toward the cost of beverages. Pastor Ray Stubbe has donated a complete collection of “Reminisce - The Magazine That Brings Back More Good Times.” The collection with be available for you to browse and to stimulate table conversation.

Farewell Pr. Fran Odden Pr. Fran Odden, who has been our interim minister since the beginning of the year, has finished his task of guiding our MET team through the MET process required during the time of pastoral vacancy. Pr. Odden was well-liked by the committee, the staff and the members of our congregation. We thank him for his work among us and wish him well during the remainder of his retirement.

Save your Pennies - they add up to support those facing incarceration Our social ministry focus for September will be on helping people in prison. Adult education will focus on the 11 x 15 campaign which is being organized to reduce our prison population by 11,000 people by the year 2015. A key strategy for reducing this population is TIP – Treatment Instead of Prison. Learn more about this program at an Adult Education Forum at St. Matthew’s on September 16. In addition we will be supporting our partner Reformation’s prison ministry. Each Sunday the people of Reformation pray for about 15 people who are members or friends/relatives of members who are incarcerated. The people of Reformation collect pennies to provide small gifts and amounts of money to the prisoners on special occasions. St Matthew’s will be supporting this ministry for the month of September by collecting pennies in a large jar in the commons. Save your pennies so that we can help to bring hope to these children of God.

TravelsMinot Mission Trip group has a few spaces available - Would you like to go? Our group of workers is growing but there are still a few places left. If you’d like to join us October 20-27, please make a decision soon. The cost of train tickets goes up as we get closer to our dates of travel. St John’s Lutheran Church, Brookfield, recently shared their Minot experience with us and felt it was their best adult mission trip yet – very well organized by Lutheran Disaster Response, good accommodations to stay in and well organized work assignments – and plenty of work. Contact Al Land or Pr Margaret if you have questions or would like to go.

Why are we going there? In 2005 severe flooding caused the worst flood damage in history, so severe that many areas have not yet recovered. Groups like ours are needed and appreciated to come to help rebuild.

Can’t Go to Minot? Then Help another worker - Help St. Matthew’s Minot Workers Get to Work The cost of our adult mission trip to Minot is over $400 per person. All of that cost is traditionally paid by those who go to work. In past years the cost was a little over $300. The additional cost this year is due to transportation. We’ve chosen to take the train to save two days of travel and increase our work time. In addition to train fare we still need to rent vans in Minot to get us to our work sites. We’d like to raise $1500 to help reduce the cost to our Minot workers. If you can make a donation please make your check payable to St. Matthew’s and mark it Minot Transportation. Thank you for your help.

Next El Salvador Trip is Set for January 8 – 17, 2013 Adults and Youth invited Plans for St. Matthew’s annual Partnership trip to El Salvador are underway. The trip will take place from January 8th – 17th and is open to adults and college-aged young adults. This is a meaningful trip that includes cultural, relational, and work pieces. If you are interested in being part of this enriching experience, talk to Pastor Chris or Gretchen Haugse. Commitments and a deposit of $150 are now due and since space is limited, the sooner you can let us know, the better!

Travels of Paul Trip opportunity with Pr. Margaret, Spring 2013 We are planning a trip focused on the travels of Paul. Led by Profs Barbara Rossing and Ester Menn of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, this trip will combine students from LSTC and members of St Matthew’s. Two doctors and their spouses will be joining the group. We will leave on the evening of May 19 or 20 and return 10 - 12 days later. Places that will be visited include Istanbul, Bursa, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Egirdir, Antalya, Konya, Ugrup and Ankara. These are sites where Paul spread the gospel as well as cities mentioned in the book of Revelation. We will be exposed to sites that are important to both Muslims and Christians. Preparation for the trip will probably include a bible study on Revelation and lecture and readings on Paul’s travels. The cost of the trip will be approximately $3,500. See Pr Margaret with questions. The trip is filling up - if you are considering going, please get your name on the list.
