Whether you were raised in church or not you have probably heard this big fish story where
Jonah tries to run and escape from God, and is swallowed by a fish. We love this story, yet we
barely understand what it means. In June and July, we will be on a six week journey through the
book of Jonah called, “Pursued by Grace.”
It is important to note that Jonah is not the hero of this story. God is the hero. The book is
about a God of relentless grace who never gives up on Jonah even when he sits under a vine and
pouts. There is a whole lot of Jonah in most of us. This is why we need outrageous grace.
This little book in the Bible is only four chapters long and can be read in a few minutes.
However, the book is profound, taking us through a little window right to the heart of God. Join
us for this exciting journey in June and July.

Care Closet “Baby Shower”
June 28th, 12pm
The Baby Shower is for Stepping Stone’s new Continuing Care Program. This is the first aftercare program for Stepping Stones and it is for the mothers that have successfully completed treatment. The “Care Closet” is a motivational incentive “store” that the mothers can earn “Care Cash” to “buy” needed and wanted items for their children and also for themselves. The clients can earn Care Cash by going to weekly, individual and group meetings, negative drug screens, 12-step work and keeping scheduled doctor appointments. Needed items for the Care Closet are any baby items, items for children up to age 12 and also items that a mother may need or want. The “gifts” for the Baby Shower don’t need to be wrapped and are for the Care Closet. The Care Closet is stocked by grants and donations from the churches in our community. There are items from diapers to toys, from clothes to cookbooks. They do appreciate new items and all donations are greatly appreciated!! Join us on June 28
th for a summer lunch immediately following second service, with the “baby shower” starting at 1pm.
There will also be a woman sharing her story of recovery. Please make plans to attend. The church will provide the chicken and we are asking the congregation to bring a side or dessert! For additional information contact Rhonda Amato: 740-821-3701, [email protected].
Leadership Team Update
It has been an exciting season of ministry at Cornerstone in 2015! We finished up the 2014 “I’m In
Campaign” with a new youth room, new sanctuary projectors, and organ repairs. The Leadership Team
continues to work on our many MCCI (Missional Church Consultation Initiatives) as we move forward
reaching Portsmouth and the world for Christ.
A few highlights:
Joseph Bishman had a training session on Operations and Team Building in May.
Wayne Young will become the new part time Director of Spiritual Formation in July.
We improved our guest readiness by adding parking lot signage.
We changed Cornerstone 101 to better connect newcomers.
Quieter ducts were added to rooms 108 and 109 to make it easier to hear.
Parking Lot lights were replaced with new more efficient ones.
We held a discussion on church finances in May.
A new digital soundboard will be installed in June in the sanctuary.
We have already exceeded our 2015 goal for baptisms.
Julia Basham and Chris Guilliams have joined the Leadership Team.
*Minutes are available in the church office from the prior month’s meeting.

REAL LIFE Youth in Mission
In less than three weeks, the youth of Cornerstone will be serving those in
need in our nation’s capital. This mission experience will be completely different than
any of our other mission opportunities. In the past we have dealt mainly with fami-
lies in their homes. This time however we will be dealing with people who truly have
nothing but the clothes on their back. Our hope is to see Christ in the midst of all the
poverty.
The youth have been working very hard fundraising in preparation for this
trip. So far we have raised over seven thousand dollars of our almost nine thousand
dollar budget. The money we’ve raised will go toward food and lodging the almost 30 of us while we are in
Washington D.C. as well as food and supplies for the homeless men, women and children there. As you can
tell by the numbers, we still need a little help. Would you be willing to help these young men and women
reach their goal? Any donation of money, as well as snacks, beverages or homemade sweets would be great-
ly appreciated.
Each youth and adult going to Washington D.C. with us has committed not only one full week of their
year to serving God, but also $90 of their own money to go and serve people they have never met before.
We have served our community well these past few years and this year we wanted to go somewhere where
these young men and women would be able to see God and be His light in a world very unlike our own.

A New Mission Opportunity for Cornerstone
For some time Cornerstone has been working to establish a relationship with the Red
Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky. Red Bird mission is closely affiliated with the United
Methodist Church and many local Methodist churches have maintained a close
working relationship with the Mission through the years. Such a relationship could
provide Cornerstone parishioners with a meaningful outreach opportunity….especially
for folks who have not been a part of an out-of-town mission experience. In addition,
this relationship will give Cornerstone parishioners who cannot travel, but who are in a position to
provide material or financial support, another excellent opportunity to help under-privileged people
right here in Appalachia.
Two opportunities are presently available. First, there is a small team from Cornerstone scheduled to
work at Red Bird Mission during the week of Sunday, June 14 – Saturday, June 20. (Specific dates
and times within that week are yet to be determined). The work being performed by the team will be
dependent on the desire, talent and skill of the team members. Red Bird Mission has so many projects
underway, there is always plenty of work for both skilled and unskilled volunteers. So, if you would like
to jump on board, consider yourself warmly invited! For details regarding the June trip, simply contact
Gay Chandler 740-355-3236, [email protected], or Pastor Tom, 740-285-4494,
If traveling with the June team is not an option, but you would like to help out in some way, please
consider donating items from the list below. The Mission is in need of the following items in order to
accommodate the needs of the people they serve: (1) large heavy duty black trash bags, (2) canned
goods, (3) toilet paper, (4) paper towels, (5) clothes, any size/gender. Simply bring these items to the
church prior to Sunday, June 14. Place them in the hallway under the coat racks, near the Church
Office. The team will take these items to the Mission. If you wish to make a monetary donation, please
contact Pastor Tom.
If you are unfamiliar with Red Bird Mission, feel free to peruse their website: www.rbmission.org. You
will discover a wealth of information to acquaint you with the Mission and the diversity of ministries in
which they are engaged. In addition, we have a personal contact at the Mission who is assisting us
with this new initiative. If your questions are not answered on the website, we can place a call and get
the answer for you.
Following our initial efforts this year, we envision expanding our outreach to Red Bird Mission in the
years to come. This relationship is a win-win for all concerned. Struggling folks in Appalachia will be
given a helping hand, and Cornerstone parishioners will have a meaningful Mission experience. Where
Foodbank
The Cornerstone United Methodist Church Foodbank will celebrate its 4th year on June 19th. Thank
you Cornerstone for your continued support of this mission! This month we are asking for pic-
nic supplies like mustard, catsup, relish, or baked beans. The need continues for non perishable
items as well as funding to purchase in bulk.
Please mark your calendar to come and help at 9:15 AM on June 19th. There is a job for everyone. Col-
lege students looking for community service are welcome! Delicious lunch for workers pre-
pared by Eloise White served around 11 AM. Come join the team in hands of service to those in need
in our community. For more information contact Mike Bratchett (740-352-9263) or Lynne Rodeheffer

Cornerstone will once again have the blessing of hosting two Chrysalis Flights
in July. The Girls’ Flight is scheduled for Saturday, July 11 through Monday,
July 13. The Boys’ Flight is scheduled for Saturday, July 18 through Monday,
July 20. These flights are designed to bring participants closer to Jesus
Christ and to give them a vision as to how God will use their gifts and graces
to make our world a better place. Although Chrysalis is designed for high school youth, we made
special arrangements for college students to attend our Chrysalis Flights. For many college
students, summer flights are the only opportunity they will have to attend Chrysalis.
Every Chrysalis weekend consists of unique worship opportunities, prayer, fellowship, speakers,
small group discussions, singing, great food, and just plain fun. The weekend leadership team
consists of both youth and adults who have been well trained for the Chrysalis weekend. It has
been a joy for the past eighteen years to observe both participants and team volunteers grow as
Christian leaders serving their churches, local communities and overseas mission fields.
If you would like to learn more about the Chrysalis experience, please contact Joanne Charles,
Community Lay Director for the Southern Ohio Chrysalis community, or Pastor Tom. Contact

Piano Recital
Cornerstone member and part-time organist, David Pettit, will be
giving a piano recital at Cornerstone on Friday June 19, at 7:30 pm.
The program will feature works by Scarlatti, Beethoven and
Rachmaninoff. David will close the concert with Gershwin's "Rhapsody
in Blue." A reception will follow in the Welcome Center sponsored by
Cornerstones’ Music Department.
Lunch for Our Teachers
On May 21st and 22nd Cornerstone provided lunches for the teachers
at Portsmouth City Schools. Teaching is one of the most
unappreciated professions in America
and we wanted to thank them for all that
they do. A special thank you to Jackie
Scott for leading this team.
