5. Sunday School/Small Groups help people learn the Bible and connect with others of similar interests. The structure of Sunday School allows teachers to apply Bible truths to the age-level needs and interests of children, youth, and adults. The flexibility of small groups enables the development of discipling relationships around common themes, passions, and needs.

6. Sunday School appeals to the least-churched generation in the USA. According to Barna’s research, only 14% of Generation X consider themselves to be born again. Yet according to Newsweek, 81% of all mothers and 78% of all fathers “plan to send their young children to Sunday School or some other religious training.”

7. Sunday School mobilizes believers for evangelism and disciple making. The most effective evangelism happens through one-on-one relationships - friend to friend, family member to family member, colleague to colleague. Fruitful disciples are made through intentionally helping a friend follow Jesus more closely. Weekly, somewhere in the world, over 800,000 people attend a Church of the Nazarene Sunday School/Small Group.

8. Making the connection with Sunday School/Small Groups helps close the back door of the church. A ratio of one new member to six new good friends within the first six months of joining the church significantly increases the likelihood of that new member remaining a part of the church two years later.

8 Reasons to invest in 21st CentuRY

1. Sunday School/Small Groups are essential ministries of the Church of the Nazarene, providing an infrastructure for mobilizing laity.

Youth/NYI – 58% of all churches NMI – 57% of all churches Sunday School & Small Groups – 65% of

all churches

2. Sunday School/Small Groups disciple more people than the other church ministries combined.

NYI – 425,571 NMI – 968,545 SDMI – 1,690,255

3. Sunday School mobilizes more servants in direct ministry than any other agency.

Missionaries – 724 Pastors – 24,118 Sunday School Teachers – 61,443

4. The Sunday School/Small Groups responsibility list is larger now than in the 50s, 60s, & 70s.

Sunday School and Small Groups: The key to moving beyond a Sunday crowd to a healthy body of believerswho are disciples who make disciples.

OUR MISSIONThe mission of Sunday School & Discipleship Ministries International (SDMI) is to carry out the Great Commission to children, youth, and adults in preparation for a lifetime of making Christlike disciples in the nations.

OUR PURPOSEA. To intentionally develop relationships with unreached

people until they are Christlike disciples, members of the church, and making Christlike disciples.

B. To teach the Word of God until children, youth, and adults are saved, sanctified wholly, and maturing in Christian experience.

C. To help Christians grow spiritually, involving them in evangelism, Christian education, and disciple making.

D. To encourage children, youth, and adults to enroll in Sunday School/small groups and faithfully attend.

OUR QUADRENNIAL GOALS1. To ensure all SDMI endeavors empower the local church to make Christlike disciples, to receive them as members, and to mobilize them as disciple makers.

2. To enhance the global SDMI network to strategically serve the regions, districts, and local churches.

3. To advance the goals of Connecting A New Generation (CANG) and the 4/14 age window of evangelizing and discipling children.

4. To advocate and promote Christ-centered homes, marriages, and families.

5. To promote and represent lay ministry and grass roots efforts of the local church.

6. To champion Sunday School/small group/discipleship/Bible studies and resources for global development and distribution.

Sunday School and Dicipleship Ministries International (SDMI) is consumed with the mission. The priorities of Jesus for His followers are ours. We are called to make disciples. To the extent we neglect, ignore, or omit the pursuit of the mission is the extent to which we fail to realize our Master’s expectations.

Have you been intentionally discipled by a brother or sister who helped you become more like Jesus?

Are you intentionally helping a friend follow Jesus more closely?

What would the church look like if everyone made disciples like you make disciples?

It is another way of asking, “Who is discipling you and who are you discipling?”

Making disciples means more than just dispensing information. It means going, developing new relationships, immersing others with the love of Christ, and teaching them to obey all that Jesus commands us.

Making Christlike disciples in the nations is worthy of your devotion, service, sacrifice, and life because Jesus commands it. It is not optional.

The ministries and resources reflected in these pages are designed to serve youas you pursue your mission.

In the face of societal challenges, the Church must strengthen its commitment to reach every child and family, win them to Christ and disciple them as early as the Holy Spirit gives opportunity, and teach them effectively. Together, we can touch the lives of children to make disciples and disciple-makers for Jesus Christ.
