Our parish will be hosting the clergy and faithful of the

place on Wednesday, October 9, the Eve of His Eminence’s
40th Day of Repose. It is traditional, of course, to serve such a

The service will take place beginning at 7:00 PM that evening,
and will be followed by a fellowship hour featuring light
refreshments appropriate to a fasting day.
If you are willing and able to provide a tray of light “Lenten”
foods, of a sweet or savory nature, to share with our guests that
evening, please sign up to do so on the list posted for that
purpose downstairs in the Parish Basement Social Hall. We
are, also, looking for some good people who are willing and
able to help with the set up before and clean up after that event.
If you have any questions about this event, please, see Fr. John.

Notes from Fr. John
Recently my attention was brought to this saying, “Suffer the pain of discipline, or suffer the pain of regret.” This
saying is popular in some places these days. Sometimes it is seen as the motto printed on posters of the kind that one
might see posted on the wall of a gym.
What struck me when considering this saying is that it is quite in harmony with Holy Scripture, especially with the
kind of short sayings that are often presented to us in the Psalms or Proverbs. Here is an example of that: “He who
heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof goes astray.” (Proverbs 10:17)
As Christian people we know that we can’t save ourselves. We know that we are saved by God, by and through the
saving work and sacrifice of His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, we make ourselves available for salvation
by endeavoring to live Godly and disciplined lives. Sometimes, that work of discipline is hard or painful. Sacrifices
are necessary in order to live as a Christian in the world. Nevertheless, we recognize that no sacrifice made for Christ
and His Holy Church is made in vain. Indeed, such sacrifices lead to joy, rather than regret.
A way of restating and expanding the saying with which we began these brief notes would be to say that we must
endure the hardship of saying “no” to something, in order to be able to say “yes” to something better. For us, as
Christians, the most important “yes” is said to Jesus Christ. So, we say “no,” in a disciplined way, no matter what
the cost in the short term, to all those things that would impede, in any way, that most important “yes.”
News and Notes
THIS SUNDAY! Special Basket Collection, Sunday, September 28: This Sunday, September 28, by decision of the
Parish Council, our Parish will hold a special, one-time, basket collection to benefit the Cody Family of Terryville. Jordan
Cody is an 18-year-old resident of Terryville, who is presently battling lymphoma. Her father is Terryville Volunteer Fire
Department Assistant Chief Greg Cody. The Fire Department has been doing various fundraisers to help the Cody Family
meet the costs of Jordan’s treatment, and, at the suggestion of Protodeacon Paul Nimchek, the Parish Council decided
that our parish could help with this need, too. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
Fr. John to be away on vacation this week: From Sunday afternoon, September 29, through Wednesday, October 2, Fr.
John will be away on vacation. He will be back from vacation and back in the office on Thursday morning, October 3.
During Fr. John’s absence, in the case of a true pastoral emergency requiring the ministry of a priest, please contact Fr.
David Koles at 860-573-0013. (Alternatively, you may also contact any priest of one of the parishes of the Diocese of
New England’s Connecticut Deanery. The listing of all Deanery Parishes can be viewed at
https://www.oca.org/parishes/deanery/OCA-NE-CTD. The nearest parish after New Britain is the Southbury Parish where
Fr. Moses Locke is now the Pastor.) If you reach out to Fr. David Koles in an emergency, please, also leave a voicemail
on the Terryville Parish House telephone, which number is 860-582-3631. Thank you!
Saturday, October 5, Memorial Service for departed relatives and friends of Beverly Kuzmich: At 5:30 PM on
Saturday, October 5, we will serve a Memorial Service (“Panikhida”) for departed relatives and friends of Beverly
Kuzmich. October 2, 2019, will be the second anniversary of repose of Beverly’s husband, John, who was a devoted and
devout member of our Parish. Memory Eternal!
Monday, October 7, Terryville Parish Council Meeting: The Terryville Parish Council will hold their October monthly
meeting on Monday, October 7, beginning at 7:00 PM.
Tuesday, October 8, Fr. John away for the day: On Tuesday, October 8, 2019, Fr. John Hopko will be away for the
day. He will be traveling to Saint Vladimir’s Seminary where he will be giving a guest lecture in one of the classes that
day. He will be addressing the topic of “When the Bishop Comes to Visit.”
ADDITION AND CHANGE TO SCHEDULE – Wednesday, October 9: As explained on the front page of this
bulletin, we will not have Matins on Wednesday morning, October 9, but, in the evening, we will be hosting the clergy
and faithful of the Connecticut Deanery for a 40th Day Memorial for His Eminence, our Archbishop NIKON. That 40th
Day service will be followed by a “bring-and-share” fellowship hour, with light refreshments appropriate to a fasting day.
Please, see the detailed notice on the front page of this bulletin for further information.
Parish Budget Committee Named: It is now time to begin preparing the Parish Budget for Fiscal Year 2020. The Budget
Committee has been named by the Parish Council and consists of Mark Orelup, Treasurer; Paul Senetcen, Parish Lay
President; Fr. John Hopko, Pastor; and Deacon Paul Nimchek, Parish Deacon. Also, any other interested adult member
of the parish presently in “good standing” is invited to participate in the Budget Committee. The Budget Committee is an
ad hoc committee named each year by the Parish Council for the specific purpose of preparing the annual Parish Budget
for the upcoming fiscal year.
Nominations Committee Meeting, Sunday, October 6: The Parish Nominations Committee (Fr. John Hopko, Paul
Senetcen, John Osuch, Julie Kowaleski, and Ann Sovyrda) will meet during the Coffee Social Hour following the
conclusion of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning, October 6. The Nominations Committee has the task of putting
together the slate of candidates for Parish offices (Parish Council, etc.), which is then approved by the Parish Council for
presentation for election at the Annual General Meeting of the Parish.
Alarm System to be installed: We will, over the next several weeks, be installing an alarm system in our Church building.
All those who presently hold keys to the Church MUST see Fr. John Hopko, as soon as possible, in order to be briefed
on this process. Once the alarm system is activated, key-holders will, absolutely and without exception, need to know
how to manage that system so that we do not have false alarms. Again, all key-holders are to contact Fr. John, immediately.
Thank you for your cooperation with this request.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Annual General Meeting of the Parish, Sunday, November 10: The Year 2019 Parish
Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday, November 10, beginning as soon as possible after the conclusion of
the Sunday morning Divine Liturgy that day.
Readings from Holy Scripture Scripture Readings for the 15th Sunday after Pentecost, this year September 29
The Reading from the Second Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians (2 Cor. 4:6-15)
Brothers and Sisters: It is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts
to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in
earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every
way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but
not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested
in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of
Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the
same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak,
knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his
presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase
thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
The Reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke (Luke 6:31-36)
The Lord said: “As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what
credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good
to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you
hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love
your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you
will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your
Father is merciful.”
Scripture Readings for the 16th Sunday after Pentecost, this year October 6
The Reading from the Second Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians (2 Cor. 6:1-10)
Brothers and Sisters: Working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in
vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation."
Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's
way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in
every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults,
labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love,
truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left;
in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as
unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful,
yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
The Reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke (Luke 7:11-16)
At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and many of his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of
his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw
her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the
bearers stood still. And Jesus said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began
to speak. And Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great
prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"
