TASMANIA’S training indus-try gathered at Wrest Point onFriday night to recognise andcelebrate the outstandingachievements of the state’strainers, trainees, apprenticesand employers over the pastyear.
More than 500 people at-tended the annual TasmanianTraining Awards dinner,where Roger Jaensch, Parlia-mentary Secretary for SmallBusiness, presented awards tothe winning students, trainersand employers.
Special guests included thechief executive of WorldSkillsAustralia Brett Judd.
The Tasmanian TrainingAwards are part of the Austra-lian Training Awards, spon-sored by the FederalGovernment, and most of thestate winners will representTasmania at the nationalawards to be held in Darwin inNovember.
Carpentry apprentice DrewCharlton, of New Town, wasnamed TasTAFE Apprenticeof the Year and agriculturetrainee David Gardiner, fromthe North-West town of Toga-ri, won the Federal GroupTrainee of the Year award.
The Rotary Club of Delo-raine Vocational Student of
the Year award went to CarlaWillcox from Wynyard andJarrod Edwards, also of Wyn-yard, is this year’s Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander Stu-dent of the Year.
Guilford Young College stu-dent Harrison Davidson-Lim,of Hobart, was named JobNetTasmania VET in Schools Stu-dent of the Year, while Shar-nie-Lee Clark, of Bridgewater,who is a student at the JordanRiver Learning FederationSenior School was named theConsumer, Building and Occu-pational Services School-BasedTrainee of the Year.
The Lance Barnard Mem-
orial Award for encourage-ment of potential went toBusiness trainee Jasmine Dan-iels of Hobart.
Through the equity awards,the industry also recognisesstudents who have overcomesignificant barriers to achievesuccess in training.
The title of Equity Traineeof the Year was shared by Han-nah Murray of New Norfolkand Jacob O’Beirne from Belle-rive. Work and Training EquityVocational Student of the Yearfor 2016 was hospitality studentRhiannon Smith from Manga-lore.
The awards also reward out-
standing achievement by em-ployers, training organisations and individual trainers.
The 2016 TCCI Large Em-ployer of the Year is statewide water and sewerage corporation TasWater. The TCCI Medium Employer of the Year is nationalmeat-industry giant JBS Aus-tralia’s meat-processing plant at Devonport.
Audrey Hair, a hairdressingbusiness with salons in Lauder-dale and Sorell, was named the Business and Employment Small Employer of the Year.
Large Training Organisationof the Year for 2016 is Work & Training, which operates state-
wide and is Tasmania’s largestprivate registered training or-ganisation.
Small Training Organis-ation of the Year is Launceston-based Avidity Training &Development.
This year’s Outside theSquare Solutions VET Teach-er/Trainer of the Year was NateWelch, who has co-ordinatedand rewritten the program forthe Outdoor Recreation coursefor TasTAFE.
The 2016 Trevor Leo Medalrecipients are Jon Grant fromTasTAFE and David Hind, for-mer chairman of the SkillsTasmania board.

Desire to succeed pays offAN important element of theTasmanian Training Awards isthe recognition of studentswho have overcome significantbarriers to achieve success intraining.
This year the Equity Train-ee of the Year award wasshared between Jacob O’Beir-ne, of Bellerive, and HannahMurray, of New Norfolk.
Jacob O’Beirne was a Hob-art College student undertak-ing a Ticket to WorkCertificate II in Businessschool-based qualificationwith Work & Training and wasemployed by them at the Na-tional Disability InsuranceAgency.
Since joining that organis-ation’s Service Deliverybranch, Jacob has establishedhimself as a valued and hard-working member of the team,managing the variable de-mands of workplace experi-ence, college studies and histraineeship.
For Jacob, acquiring theskills of time and task manage-ment has given him the motiv-ation to look beyond schooland plan for the future.
As winner of the 2016 Equi-ty Award for a trainee, Jacobwill receive $1000 and a tro-phy.
Fellow winner HannahMurray is employed by Work& Training at host employerMosaic Support Services,where she has worked as anadministration assistant sinceNovember 2014.
Hannah was the first Tick-et to Work School-basedTrainee in Tasmania, under-taking her Certificate II inBusiness while completingYear 13 at Claremont College.
Hannah has shown con-siderable growth in her per-sonal and professionaldevelopment, gaining valuable
skills in administration andbusiness as well as communi-cation and social skills within awork environment and nowhas a clear direction for her fu-ture career.
As co-winner of the 2016Equity Award for a Trainee,Hannah will also receive$1000 and a trophy.
The 2016 Work & TrainingEquity Vocational Student ofthe Year is Rhiannon Smith ofMangalore.
Rhiannon has had somesignificant challenges in herpersonal life, including a seri-ous car accident. However,with the help of her mother,teachers and fellow students
she has overcome the obsta-cles to succeed as a vocationalstudent.
In 2015, Rhiannon gainedCertificate 1 in Hospitality atGuilford Young College andcontinued to Certificate II thisyear.
Her desire to succeed andher tenacity has paid off and as
well as her academic and VETin School studies she is alsoundertaking a School-basedTraineeship in retail serviceswith McDonald’s Australia.
As winner of the 2016 Work& Training Equity Award for aVocational Student, Rhiannonwill receive $1000 and a spe-cially designed trophy.

Consumer, Building and Occupational Services School-Based Trainee of the Year Sharnie-Lee Clark.
THE JobNet Tasmania VET in Schools Student of the Year for 2016 is Harrison Davidson-Lim, a Year 12 student at Guilford Young College.
Cooking has been a lifelong interest for Harrison and, as a Year 8 school project, he created a website that demonstrated easy meals that could be prepared by people who
couldn’t cook or had very little experience with cooking.
In 2015, he completed Certificate I and most of Certificate II in Kitchen Operations and this year has continued his Certificate II studies.
Harrison has enjoyed a wide range of work placements in many different types of kitchens – from
banquet size to a small-scale cafe. Thanks to his school-based VET studies, Harrison now has a clear vocational goal and seems bound for a successful career in commercial cookery.
As JobNet VET in Schools Student of the Year, he wins $2000 sponsored by JobNet Tasmania, a $250 travel voucher from Andrew Jones Travel and a trophy.

Nate has been the co-ordi-nator of the outdoor recre-ation program at TasTAFE fortwo years and currently teach-es Certificate IV in OutdoorRecreation.
Before TasTAFE, Nate
worked as an outdoor instruc-tor for several schools acrossAustralia and as a guide, train-er and operations manager fora number of businesses in Aus-tralia and Africa.
He owns and operatesWild Journeys, a commercialadventure-tourism business.
Nate has re-written the
program for the Outdoor Rec-reation course and has devel-oped a Student AssessmentBooklet that is the first of itskind in the Outdoor Recre-ation training sector.
He will represent Tasmaniaat the Australian TrainingAwards to be held in Darwinin November.

He chose this area of studyfor many reasons: his Aborigi-nal heritage, his love of natureand the outdoors and his pro-fessional role in land manage-ment.
He is currently employed asthe Land Management Super-visor at the Tasmanian Abor-iginal Centre in Burniemanaging the Preminghanasite in the far north west of thestate.
Jarrod’s formal qualifica-
tions in Conservation andLand Management have en-couraged him to undertake adegree, studying Geography,Environmental Studies andHistory.
He will represent Tasmaniaat the Australian TrainingAwards in Darwin, in Novem-ber. As Tasmania’s Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander Stu-dent of the Year, he receives$3000, plus a $250 travelvoucher from Andrew JonesTravel and a specially designedtrophy.

THE Rotary Club of DeloraineVocational Student of the Yearis Carla Willcox of Wynyard.
In 2014 and again in 2015Carla applied for a place inTasTAFE’s Aged Care coursebut was unsuccessful.
Not to be deterred she se-cured a place in the CertificateIII in Disability qualificationwhich she completed in Octo-ber 2015.
With the demands of fourchildren and a fly-in, fly-outhusband she was not confi-dent about a return to study,but, with the support of herTasTAFE trainers and fellowstudents, she thrived.
The experience of practicalplacement confirmed that shehad made the right decisionand she was soon in paid em-ployment with Coastal Resi-dential Services.
Carla is now undertakingthe Certificate IV course withplans to eventually move intomanagement within the sectorand work towards improvedoutcomes for people with dis-ability.
She will represent Tas-mania at the Australian Train-ing Awards in Darwin, inNovember.
