Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

When I speak with parents who are seeking baptism for their children, I find it interesting how varied the responses are, to what baptism means to them. I hear a lot about the rite of passage, the desire to appease the grandparents, and doing it because it is what Catholic par-ents do. I think it’s important to recognize that no matter when it takes place, as infants or with our dying breath, baptism is, in fact, the defining moment in our lives. Everything that comes before is gone. And from that moment forward, everything is new. Baptism accomplishes three things in us: It washes away our sins, it defines us as children of God, and unites us to Jesus Christ in His life, death and resurrection. Why then, does Jesus go to John to be baptized? He, who is sinless, has no need of for-giveness. And the Son of God is by definition God’s child. So why did He do it? This question puzzled me for years. And then answer came to me by looking again at what this sacrament does. The baptism of Jesus accomplished two things—not for Jesus, but for us. Just as parents are told to model for their children, Jesus models for us precisely what we are to do. He did this throughout His life. Yes, he taught verbally, but how many lives were changed by His ac-tions? The second thing we see in this act, is that through our baptism we are united to Christ in the paschal mystery. Likewise, when Jesus asked John to baptism Him, he united himself to us, as sinners. Christmas was just a few weeks ago…when God came to dwell among us. But it was not enough to be among us…God desires to be one with us, for us to live in Him. And it is through our baptism that that union begins.

Many blessings in Him,

Kristie Manning

Peacemakers St Gianna Beretta Molla

St. Gianna Beretta Molla was a physician who refused an abortion when her fourth child was about to be born. She had contracted a serious illness and would die as a result. Her decision was based on her strong Catholic belief about the sacredness of life and she followed her con-science in that regard. Gianna was raised in a faith-filled family and her later medical career went in tandem with her Catholic beliefs. As a young woman she was involved in Catholic Action and St. Vincent de Paul groups in their outreach to the poor and less fortunate. She worked with the elderly who were often alone and lonely. Gianna had called her marriage a “sacrament of love.” She wrote a letter to her husband before her marriage highlighting the Christian virtues of marriage and called her and her husband to serve God in a saintly way. Gian-na died in 1962 at the age of 39. We honor Gianna Molla for living her life according to the values of her Catholic faith with strength and convic-tion. How can we carry out her legacy? Perhaps support-ing Real Options who assist women who decide against abortion. Or visit a senior who may be lonely. Or reach out with food for the poor through St. Vincent de Paul.
