Song of Gathering October 11, 2009

Thy Mercy My GodWords by John Stoker; Music by Sandra McCracken

Thy mercy my God is the theme of my songThe joy of my heart and the boast of my tongueThy free grace alone from the first to the last Hath won my affection and bound my soul fast

Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live hereSin would reduce me to utter despairBut through Thy free goodness my spirits revivedAnd he that first made me so keeps me alive

Thy mercy is more than a match for my heartWhich wonders to feel it's heartless departDissolved by Thy goodness I fall to the groundAnd weep for the praise of the mercy I've found

Great father of mercies, Thy goodness I ownAnd the covenant love of Thy crucified sonAll praise to the spirit whose whisper divineSeals mercy and pardon and righteousness mine

Welcome and Announcements

Meditation Psalm 61:1-3Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.

Call to Worship Psalm 18:1-3

Leader:Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I,

People: For You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. Let me dwell in Your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of Your wings! Selah

Leader: For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name. Prolong the life of the King; may His years endure to all generations!

People: May He be enthroned forever before God; appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over Him! So will I ever sing praises to your name, as I perform my vows day after day.

Songs of PraiseGod Be Merciful to Me

Words by Richard RedheadMusic by Christopher Miner, 1997

God be merciful to me On Thy grace, I rest my pleaPlenteous in compassion Thou, Blot out my transgressions nowWash me, make me pure withinCleanse, oh, cleanse me from my sin

My transgressions I confess, Grief and guilt my soul oppressI have sinned against Thy grace And provoked Thee to Thy faceI confess Thy judgment justSpeechless, I, Thy mercy trust

Gracious God, my heart renew,Make my spirit right and true.Cast me not away from Thee,Let Thy Spirit dwell in me;Thy salvation’s joy impart,Steadfast make my willing heart.

Sinners then shall learn from me,And return, O God, to TheeSavior all my guilt remove,And my tongue shall sing Thy loveTouch my silent lips, O Lord,And my mouth shall praise accord

IndescribableWords and Music by Laura Story, 2004

From the highest of heights to the depths of the seaCreation's revealing Your majestyFrom the colors of fall to the fragrance of springEvery creature unique in the song that it singsAll exclaiming

(Chorus)Indescribable, uncontainable,You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name. You are amazing GodAll powerful, untamable,Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaimYou are amazing God

Who has told every lightning bolt where it should goOr seen heavenly storehouses laden with snowWho imagined the sun and gives source to its lightYet conceals it to bring us the coolness of nightNone can fathom

(Chorus)x2

Indescribable, uncontainable,You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name. You are amazing God

Incomparable, unchangeableYou see the depths of my heart and You love me the sameYou are amazing God; You are amazing God

Prayer of Confession Eternal God, you do not change. You have revealed yourself to us in your Word. You call us to worship you in spirit and in truth. But we confess that we often worship not your true self but who we wish you to be. We too often ask you to bless what we do rather than seeking to do what you bless. Forgive us for seeking concessions when we should be seeking guidance. Forgive us when our worship shapes you into what we want instead of shaping us into what you want. Help us to meet you here, that we might bow before your unspeakable majesty and so live for you now and ever, in Christ. Amen.

Song of Confession

We Have Not Known Thee As We OughtWords by Thomas B. Pollock, 1889

Music by Sarah Griffin, 2009

The things of earth have filled our thought,And trifles of the passing hour.Lord, give us light Thy truth to see,And make us wise in knowing Thee.

Thy presence we have coldly sought,And feebly longed Thy face to see.Lord, give a pure and loving heartTo feel and own the love Thou art.

Chorus 1:We have not known Thee as we ought,Nor learned Thy wisdom, grace and pow'r;We have not loved Thee as we ought,Nor cared that we are loved by Thee;

Lord, give us faith to know Thee near,And grant the grace of holy fear.Lord, give the zeal, and give the might,For Thee to toil, for Thee to fight.

Bridge:When shall we know Thee as we ought,And fear, and love, and serve aright! When shall we, out of trial brought,Be perfect in the land of light!

Chorus 2:We have not known Thee as we ought,Nor learned Thy wisdom, grace and pow'r;Lord, give the zeal, and give the might,For Thee to toil, for Thee to fight. Assurance of Pardoning Grace 2 Corinthians 5:21For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Song of Offering/Thanksgiving

Ancient WordsWords and Music by Lynn DeShazo, 2001

Holy words long preservedfor our walk in this world,They resound with God's own heart.Oh let the ancient words impart

Words of Life, words of HopeGive us strength, help us copeIn this world, where e'er we roamAncient words will guide us Home.

Ancient words ever trueChanging me and changing you,We have come with open heartsOh let the ancient words impart

Holy words of our FaithHanded down to this ageCame to us through sacrificeOh heed the faithful words of Christ.

Holy words long preservedFor our walk in this world. They resound with God's own heartOh let the ancient words impart.

Song of ResponseAmazing Grace

(My Chains Are Gone)Words by John Newton, 1779-1851, Music by Chris Tomlin, 2006

Amazing grace how sweet the soundThat saved a wretch like me!I once was lost, but now am foundWas blind but now I see

T'was grace that taught my heart to fearAnd grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appearThe hour I first believed

(Chorus)My chains are gone, I've been set freeMy God my Savior has ransomed meAnd like a flood His mercy reignsUnending love Amazing Grace

The Lord has promised good to meis word my hope securesHe will my shield and portion beAs long as life endures

(Chorus)My chains are gone, I've been set freeMy God my Savior has ransomed meAnd like a flood His mercy reignsUnending love Amazing Grace

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,The sun forbears to shine; But God, who call'd me here below,Will be for - ever mineWill be for - ever mine
