MinisterRev. Carol Strecker

In recent weeks I have beenreminded of the importanceof direct, communication andthe shortcomings of socialmedia. Facebook posts andeven email provide snippets

and sound bites without a wider context. And there's usually more to thestory then meets the eye. Without the benefit of conversation; the ability to clarify and ask questions, to hear someone's tone of voice and read body language it's easy to misunderstand. Rather then deepening relationships people can get hurt.

Email is great for scheduling meeting and sharing factual information. Facebook is great for sharing photos and information about milestones and events. It's a real touchstone for me living so far away from family and friends back home. But these technological tools are not the same thing as talking with someone - face to face. One of the things I value most about Unitarian Universalism is that weare covenantal communities - We Gather! We actually take the time to get together; coming to the table, meeting face to face - to learn and growtogether in community. We value our diversity. It makes us stronger. And - we make promises to one another abouthow we want to gather in community.

Every Sunday we say,

We gather in the spirit of loveWith open minds, open hearts and openhands.May we learn to dwell together in peace;seek the truth in love and build bridges of understandingas we work together to create a more just and loving world.

I'd like to suggest that it's especially important during this time of transition to check in with one another - and do it face to face! Participate in Candidating

Week! Reach out to people you know who aren't participating. Reach out to people you don't know. Get to know Rev. Coppola. Give her the opportunity to get to know you. No minister or congregation can meet everyone's needs, but you can do what you can to know

and be known in the service of understanding and love.

Faithfully Yours, Rev. Carol

This past month has been an emotional whirl wind for me. Our candidate minister, Rev. Beckett Coppola, is on board to visit us. Thank you again, howcan we say thank you enough, to the MSC group for their dedication to our congregation, to each other and to the process of finding a settled Minister. Also, the work the board has been doing on policy review and updates hasconsumed me in a different way. Our loss of a KUF member has deeply affected me. Why do good people die and how shall we live in grief? Those who were able to attend her celebrationof life had the privilege of witnessing and sharing in our goodbyes to a new and valued member.

Called Beyond The WallsThe Rev. Wendy Luella Perkins

We are sending you light, to heal you, to hold youWe are sending you light, to hold you in loveSong sung at recent Hiroshima Day commemorations in Kingston

As some of you know, I have been part of organizing the Hiroshima DayPeace Lantern Ceremony here in

Kingston for the last several years. I have been part of planning the event, singing songs, leading the ritual and program, helping with crafts, promoting the event, and much more. Ithas been a meaningful part of my community ministry that fits well with Unitarian Universalist values including our sixth and seventh principles: “The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all” and “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”

Hiroshima Day is marked annually on August 6th to commemorate the dropping of nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, August 6 and 9, 1945. The two cities were devastated from these bombs and the casualties, mostly civilians, were estimated at around 200,000, with many more people dying later from injuries and illness. While Hiroshima Day commemorations started in Japan within a few years of the dropping the atomic bombs, events started here in Kingston in the early 1980s. Over the decades, the commemoration has taken on many different forms in different locations but always to remember those affected by nuclear weapons and nuclear accidents and to advocate for a world free of nukes.

Hiroshima Day Coalition – Second planning meeting for our 2017 commemorationMonday May 15, 7:00 pm106 Raglan Rd (my home)RSVP's appreciated: [email protected]

Members and friends of KUF are invited to attend this community planning meeting with the Hiroshima Day Coalition. If Hiroshima Day commemorations in Kingston have been meaningful to you in past years, you are concerned about the recent rhetoric between the United States and North Korea, and/or you want to act locally to promote peace and justice then perhaps you would like to attend.

Bring your ideas and suggestions and we’ll talk about what we, as a community, would like to do this year to commemorate Hiroshima Day. Hopeto see some of you then. If you can't make this meeting, but have ideas to share and/or want to be kept in the loopabout future meetings, please let me know.

KUF Amnesty International Letter-Writing ReportApril 23, 2017

by Barbara Dick and Marlene Phillips

On April 23, 10 members of KUF signed 30 letters to the President and the Minister of Internal Affairs in Belarus as well as the Belarusian Ambassador in Ottawa, on behalf of Larysa Schiryakova, a journalist in Belarus. The Belarusian authorities are threatening to take her 10-year-old son away from her in retaliation for her critical reporting of events in the country including the ongoing crackdown against peaceful protestors.

We also signed three petitions on behalf of prisoners of conscience in China and Iran, and LGBTI people whohave been harassed, abused, and imprisoned in Tunesia.

The next AI letter-writing table will be held after service on May 21.

Celebrate Child Haven Children's Homesby Jackie RushMorgan

Our heart felt thanks to the KUF members who have supported Child Haven International (India) by attending KUF's yearly fundraiser and/or by contributing to the water filtration plant at the Kaliyampoondi,

KUFLinks May 2017 Page 3

Tamil Nadu children's home this winter.

Andy and I are back from our three month internship at the Kaliyampoondi Child Haven home, near Chennai. We are SO pumped to enjoy Kingston's Child Haven fundraiser, which will be 6:30 - 9:30 on Saturday, June 17. For us, it will be a big celebration of Kingston's contributions to Child Haven International.

We have a new venue: Christ Church Parish Hall, 990 Sydenham Rd. It has a big, industrial kitchen for our caterer, Jack Francis to prepare the wonderful Indian savouries and sweets we enjoy so much. There's plenty of space for thesilent and live auction of Indian handicrafts. It also has a big, open dance floor for Bollywood dancers, inviting more participants to join in.

Tickets will be available after May and June KUF services. Please bring some friends. It's wonderful to contribute so directly to destitute children, and it's a great party, too!

UnirondackAs is the long standing tradition for KUF, once again this year we are making our annual trip to Unirondack. Come join the fun and camaraderie of the camp to be held Sept 8, 9 and 10.This year we have special prices for first time attendees at 25% off for individuals and a special family price for first time families of $125, and that is for two nights accommodations and five meals.

We are hoping to have our new minister join us so this is a great time toget a chance to know that person in a beautiful, relaxed setting.

Please contact John Johnson, Anne Chiarelli, or David Mathers for further information and registration forms.

What's For Sale? You’ll find surprises at the KUF SpringSale. In the past there have been events

such as afternoon swim at a cottage, visit to bee-keeping site, trips to the theatre, afternoon tea on the deck, musical mini-concert, dog-walking, play-reading, sailboat trip, etc.

This annual sale started in 2011. It began as a sale of goods and services. But the services proved more popular than the goods, probably because the services involved two or more people who enjoyed the opportunity to get together, so the goods part of the sale disappeared after two years. Hence the motivation for the sale became opportunity to socialize as well as fund raising and many of the services became events.

If you’re new to KUF or have not yet participated, you can participate by offering an event/service, by purchasing one or more, or both. Here is how the sale works.

1. KUF members or friends volunteer to provide an event of some kind, usually in the summer.

2. The person providing the event statesthe cost, the number of people who can participate, and (usually) the date for it.

3. The list of events is posted in KUF

at Sunday Services in late May and June, and published by email or Mini-Link or phone message.

4. People buy events of interest to them at Sunday services or by contacting Allan, Ann or, others namedbelow. The sale ends June 10.

5. Payment for the events go to KUF, not to the persons providing them.

If you can offer an event or want to discuss a possible event, please contact Ann Copland or 613-546-5271, or Allan Hammond or 613-544-8184. Do this as soon as possible, not later than May 20.

This year’s sale is also assisted by Valerie Colgan, Joe Pater, and Ken Weber.
