‘OHANA CAMP

Last fall, several UABC families signed up to be a host family for an international student. This means that they would have that student into their home for a meal at least once a semester and include them in holidays and family outings. The goal of this program is to share Christ through welcoming students who are far from home and to learn from them as well.

Despite their busy and chaotic schedules, Grace and Dennis Poei followed God’s nudge to sign up to be a host family. Soon they met Takashi, a student from Japan, whom they were matched with. They got to know him through meals and outings but when they would talk about Jesus, they couldn’t tell if Takashi was interested or just being polite. He expressed that in Japan he didn’t have a religion and didn’t think about it much.

One day after having dinner, Grace dropped Takashi off at his dorm and as she drove home she prayed "Lord, I pray that Takashi will think about his future and begin to wonder whether God is real and become curious about who God is."

Takashi returned home in May and the Poeis were sad because they thought Takashi hadn’t given God any more thought. Then an unexpected email came from him:

“Thank you for everything you’ve done in Hawaii. You guys always helped me, took to many places and invited to the dinners. I could enjoy Hawaii so much because of you guys. I really appreciate it. You taught me a lot of things. I am really happy to know and hear about God. I have grown up for 21 years without any kind of religion and I had never thought and paid attention to God before I went to Hawaii. But as I went to the churches and met those who believe God, I realized that people who engaged in God are really kind to everyone and have warm hearts. They are willing to help people having problems and suffering even though they have to consume their money and time. How awesome you guys are!!! You guys were inspiring me all the time, which changed my mind in a good way for sure! Thank you so much for making me realize many things I did not know.”

Takashi’s story is not finished yet. Let’s pray that as he adjusts back to life in Japan and reflects on his time in Hawaii that he will remember the conversations with the Poeis and that he will encounter Jesus. Pray that God will place other Christians in his path that will encourage him.

Pray for Muslims in Manoa. Did you know the only mosque in Hawaii is less than a mile from our church? Ramadan is a moth of intense prayer and fasting for Muslims around the world (May 15-June 14 this year). Pray that they will encounter Jesus through dreams and visions during this month.
