Welcome to Chichester Cathedral. This booklet contains all you will need to follow the Cathedral Eucharist. Please take it home to aid your daily devotions. The booklet includes suggestions about posture, but it is important that individuals feel comfortable. This booklet is also available in a format with larger print. Please ask the stewards if you would like a copy. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer at the communion, please indicate this to one of the stewards before the Service. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use this, please switch your hearing aid to ‘t’. A collection will be taken in the hymn after The Peace. Many regular, even if infrequent, members of the congregation give by standing order. This helps the Cathedral to budget. If you would like to know more about this method of giving please see the information on the Pew Sheet. GIFT AID - If you are a UK taxpayer, it would help enormously if you would place your donation in a Gift Aid envelope (included in the service booklet) before putting it in the collection, because we can then reclaim 25p from HMRC for every £1 you give. The Cathedral Choristers are educated at the Prebendal School. For more information about the outstanding educational opportunities offered by the school please visit www.prebendalschool.org.uk. Children’s activities - A crèche and children’s group, Pebbles (ages 2-11), meet in the Canons’ Vestry during this service. If your children would like to join the group please ask a steward for more information. Parents are welcome too! Toy bags are also available during the service.

ORDER OF SERVICE Celebrant: The Reverend Canon Tim Schofield, Precentor Please stand.

Processional Hymn (CP 65)

Of the Father’s love begotten ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending he, of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore. O that birth for ever blessèd when the Virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bare the Saviour of our race, and the babe, the world’s Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore.

4

O ye heights of heaven, adore him; angel-hosts, his praises sing; powers, dominions, bow before him, and extol our God and King: let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert ring, evermore and evermore. This is he whom seers and sages sang of old with one accord; whom the writings of the prophets promised in their faithful word; now he shines, the long-expected: let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore. Christ, to thee, with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to thee, hymn and chant and high thanksgiving and unwearied praises be, honour, glory, and dominion, and eternal victory, evermore and evermore.

Words: Prudentius (348-c. 413) tr. J. M. Neale (1818-1866) and H. W. Baker (1821-1877)

Music: Divinum Mysterium Melody from Piae Cantiones (1582)

The president greets the people: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May the light and peace of Jesus Christ our Lord be with you. The Lord bless you. The president blesses the candles, saying Lord God, the springing source of everlasting light, pour into the hearts of your faithful people the brilliance of your eternal splendour, that we, who by these kindling flames light up this temple to your glory, may have the darkness of our souls dispelled, and so be counted worthy to stand before you in that eternal city where you live and reign, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

6

Prayers of Penitence The people are invited to call to mind and confess their sins: Hear the words of our Saviour Jesus Christ: ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me shall never walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.’ Let us therefore bring our sins into his light and confess them in penitence and faith. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in excelsis

Missa Brevis Lennox Berkeley (1903-1989)

Choir Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis; qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Iesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu: in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ: O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art Most High, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

8

The Collect Let us pray. Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please sit.

First Reading Malachi 3: 1-5 Read by Sophie Rowe See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight – indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

9

Then I will draw near to you for judgement; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 24: 7-end Response sung by the Choir, then repeated by the congregation:

Choir All Choir All Choir All Choir All

Lift up your heads, O gates; be lifted up, you everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. ‘Who is the King of glory?’ ‘The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord who is mighty in battle.’ The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Lift up your heads, O gates; be lifted up, you everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. ‘Who is this King of glory?’ ‘The Lord of hosts, he the King of glory.’ The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Music: Colin Mawby (b. 1936)

Second Reading Hebrews 2: 14-end Read by Michael Baker Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand.

Hymn (SP 199)

Lord, set your servant free, fulfil your ancient vow, and peaceful let the parting be which seals that promise now. For here the child of light, the world’s salvation lies, and on the nations lost in night I see his dawn arise. A radiance unconfined to change of time or place, he is the hope of humankind, the glory of our race.

Words: Mary Holtby, based on Luke 2: 29-32

Music: St Paul’s John Stainer (1840-1901)

Gospel Reading When the Gospel is announced, the reader says The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Luke 2: 22-40 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’ Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed – and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

13

There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. All remain standing as the Gospel Procession returns, and then sit for the Sermon.

Sermon The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, Dean Following the Sermon, please stand.

14

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

15

Prayers of Intercession The president introduces the prayers of intercession. Please sit or stand. These responses are used: Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. And at the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Peace

Please stand. In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high has broken upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace. All remain standing to sing the offertory hymn:

Hymn (NEH 408i)

Love Divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesu, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.

Finish then thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation, perfectly restored in thee, changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise!

Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Blaenwern

William Rowlands (1860-1937)

The Eucharistic Prayer

It is indeed right and good, always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ, who is one with you from all eternity. For on this day he appeared in the temple in substance of our flesh to come near to us in judgement. He searches the hearts of all your people and brings to light the image of your splendour. Your servant Simeon acclaimed him as the light to lighten the nations while Anna spoke of him to all who looked for your redemption. Destined for the falling and rising of many, he was lifted high upon the cross and a sword of sorrow pierced his mother’s heart when by his sacrifice he made our peace with you. And now we rejoice and glorify your name that we, too, have seen your salvation and join with angels and archangels in their unending hymn of praise:

The Lord be with you All and al - so with you.

Lift ___ up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

18

Choir Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth, pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.

19

Praise to you, Lord Jesus: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life: Lord Jesus, come in glory. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:

All

Please stand or sit.

20

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread The president breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion The president invites the people to communion: Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

21

The president and people receive communion. Members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive communion if they wish. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, please come to the altar rail with everybody else and bow your head. The Choir sings Agnus Dei:

Hymn during Communion (AMNS 120)

O Jesu, King most wonderful, thou Conqueror renowned, thou sweetness most ineffable, in whom all joys are found! When once thou visitest the heart, then truth begins to shine, then earthly vanities depart, then kindles love divine. Thee, Jesu, may our voices bless, thee may we love alone, and ever in our lives express the image of thine own. Abide with us, and let thy light shine, Lord, on every heart; dispel the darkness of our night, and joy to all impart. Jesu, our love and joy, to thee, the Virgin’s holy Son, all might and praise and glory be while endless ages run.

Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.
