Overview

The Sunny Articulation & Phonology Test (SAPT) is an individually administered clinical tool for screening, identifica-

tion, diagnosis, and follow-up evaluation of articulation skills in English speaking individuals. The SAPT was de-

signed and developed by Barbara Fernandes and published by Smarty Ears Apps, LLC. The SAPT can be used with

individuals of all age groups. The SAPT is a unique tool that provides qualitative information for both sounds in

words and sounds in sentences. The Sunny Articulation & Phonology Test is compatible with the iPad, iPhone, &

iPod touch running iOS 5.1 or above.

Uses

The Sunny Articulation Phonology Test can be used to:

- Collect information regarding an individual’s articulation skills;

- Supplement data of a standardized articulation measure;

- Determine the presence of an articulation disorder;

- Measure treatment efficacy;

- Articulation screening;

- Determine intelligibility differences between sounds in words and sounds in sentences

Areas assessed by SAPT

The SAPT aids in obtaining a complete picture of a client’s overall speech sound abilities by assessing and analyzing

errors according to both articulation and phonology. An examinee may have difficulties with the movement of the

speech mechanisms to produce a sound (articulation), with the understanding and application of the correct phono-

logical rules or patterns for production (phonology), or a combination of both. In addition to standard consonants,

the SAPT allows the professional to examine vowels in words. Recognizing that many clients are able to produce

single words correct, yet have a breakdown in the coordination of speech sounds in sentences, SAPT provides a

screening for all phonemes in sentences. Finally, with the /r/ screener with vocalic /r/, initial /r/, and /r/ blends,

the professional is able to determine exactly which /r/ sound is in error (see image 1.0). An understanding of the

specific types of errors made by a child will result in an intervention plan that can more appropriately target the

child’s underlying speech deficiency.

How to use it

Administration Time

Administration time for the screening is between 4 to 8 minutes. Administration of the full assessment is from 9 to 20

minutes. The administration time varies depending on the child’s attention span, the use of sample recordings for

target words, the use of the recording feature, and whether or not vowels and sentences are assessed.

Adding Users

In order to administer the Sunny Articulation Phonology Test Kit, the speech-language pathologist must first enter

the name and the date of birth of the student being tested. In order to enter a new student click on the “add student”

on the main menu (see image 1.1)

A pop up screen will allow you to enter the student’s name, date of birth, gender, and mark if English is first lan-

guage (image 1.2). This information will be displayed on the report. After you enter the requested information, click

“Done” to save the information. This process will need to be repeated for every new student.

Administering an assessment

The SAPT has four possible assessment options:

1) Screening

2) Full evaluation

3) Full evaluation with 15 vowel targets

4) /r/ screener

The professional must make certain the desired as-

sessment is surrounded by the white square to show

that it is selected.

Adjusting Settings

Users can access the settings of the SAPT App on the main menu, by clicking the settings button on the upper right

side of the screen.

A menu will drop down for your selection where the professional has the following choices:

1) Turning transition audio on/off

2) Select Transition type

3) Select voice recording type

4) Select if the written word is shown at the bottom of the screen

5) Insert the evaluator’s name

6) Show the evaluator’s name on the report

7) Include phoneme acquisition timeline on the report

Transition Type

Transition sounds refer to the sounds that are played when the user advances to the next image during the assess-

ment. This can be either a tone or a praise audio and can be turned on or off.

Voice Recording Type

The SAPT App contains two options for voice

recording:

Single Audio File: Selecting this option will allow

SLPs to record one single voice file throughout

the assessment by simply pressing the rec-

ord/pause button for each desired production.

At the end of the assessment, there will be one

audio file containing all the recordings.

Per Word: Selecting this option will allow the

SLP to record several voice files and save each

one individually.

Written Cues:

It is possible to turn off the written target word

below each image by turning the “Display

written word” button OFF. image 1.7

Documenting errors

Screening

Recording errors on the SAPT is very simple. Each transcribed word is composed of phonemes colored in black and

in green (see image below).

The black phonemes on each transcribed word are not targeted and therefore are not touch sensitive. The green pho-

nemes are the targeted phonemes in each word and therefore touch sensitive.

When the student’s product is not accurate, the speech-language pathologist must tap the phoneme to indicate that

the production was not accurate (see image 2.1). The SAPT will respond to this gesture by transforming the tapped

phoneme to red (see image 2.1).

If the production is accurate, do not tap any phoneme; just proceed to the next screen.

Full Evaluation

The full assessment option has the same basic concepts of the “screening” option for recording errors. However, in

the full assessment, when a phoneme is selected as an error, a pop up menu displays for the SLP to choose which

type of error the client made. Simply select the appropriate option (see images 2.3 and 2.4)

When the SLP chooses “substituted” as the error, a window pops up to select the substituted phoneme (see images 2.5

and 2.6)

Simply tap on the button to select the specific phoneme the client used in place of the target phoneme. This infor-

mation will be saved and interpreted by the SAPT.

Adding noted during test administration

Users are able to enter notes throughout the testing session. Each note will be saved per session. For example: If the

student is saying the target word “scissors” and you notice that the student is producing a lateral /s/ you may simply

write “lateral /s/” on the note screen. The notes page will display all the notes for that testing session. In addition, the

notes will display on the home page with the testing information (see images 2.7 and 2.8).

available with the rest of the testing data.

Interpreting Results

The Sunny Articulation Phonology Test presents the results in six different categories:

Raw Score

The raw score is the number of targeted

phonemes minus the number of errors.

Intelligibility Rating

Many times, how well a client is able to be understood changes dramatically from single word and conversational

speech. The SAPT now includes an intelligibility rating for the SLP to estimate at the end of the assessment. There are

two types of intelligibility: Single word and Conversational Speech. The home screen test information box provides

both kinds of intelligibility at a glance (see images 3.3 and 3.4).

Preview Results

In order to access the result information, tap on the box associated with the

assessment administered and select “Preview Results” (see image 3.5)

b. Manner of articulation

The manner of articulation tab, analyzes all the manner of articulation in English. The phonemes are also broken

down individually which allows for identification of errors that frequently occur to one phoneme or word location

within the same manner of articulation.

c. Voicing features

Phonemes are analyzed according to their

voice under the “voicing” tab.

d. Words

The words tab provides information regard-

ing the words targeted on the assessment as

well as the errors produced by the student.

The phonemes are color coded to indicate

whether a phoneme was produced correctly

or not.

Black phonemes were not targeted.

Green phonemes indicate that the phoneme

was targeted and the student produced it

correctly.

Red phonemes indicate errors. Following

the red phonemes is the error type as selected by the SLP. image 3.8

e. Place of Articulation

The Sunny Articulation Phonology Test

provides automatic analysis of the er-

rors marked by the SLP.

A second Place of Articulation graph is

available for errors in sentences in the

“sentences” tab and discussed in the

“Sentences Subtest” section.

The total percentage of error is the per-

centage of phonemes marked as misar-

ticulated.

Sharing Results

E-mailing Results

Speech-Language Pathologists can e-mail the results of the assessment immediately after the assessment. To email

the results information, tap on the “share” button from anywhere on the Results screen (see image 4.1).

A pop up screen will display with options for reviewing notes,

sharing results by e-mail, exporting the results to the Therapy

Report Center, or opening in another app of your choice (e.g.,

dropbox, PDF viewer).

Users can e-mail the results to themselves in order to save for

their records and keep a backup of the student’s assessment, or to

send to the parents. The e-mail is set up as a simple report and

can be edited text or a PDF. See a sample report below:

Reviewing notes

Speech-Language Pathologists can review the notes taken during the assessment by clicking on the “share” button

and the review notes button.

Editing notes

Speech-Language pathologists can edit notes after the assessment is completed by tapping on the “edit notes” button

from the home screen.

If you recorded the voice of the client during the assessment, it is possible to access those recordings by accessing the

“Preview recordings” button.

R – Screener

Administration Time

Administration time for the Sunny Articulation & Phonology Test Kit – R Screener (SAPT-R) is between 5 to 15

minutes. The administration time varies depending on the child’s attention span, the use of sample recordings for

target words, the use of the recording feature, and whether or not vowels and sentences are assessed.

Administration of the SAPT-R

Administration of the SAPT-R is identical to that of the SAPT.

Phonemes Targeted

The SAPT-R has 42 targeted /r/ phonemes. Of these, 12 are r-blends, 10 are prevocalic /r/, 2 are “rl” words, and the

remainder are the 6 vocalic /r/ in all positions of words (e.g., “airplane, stairs, and mare” complete the “air” vocalic

/r/).

Documenting Errors

Documenting errors on the SAPT-R is done in the same way as the full-assessment. Simply tap the /r/ sound in error.

A pop-up window will display where the SLP can determine which type of error occurred. See the images below.

This information will be saved, interpreted by the SAPT-R, and available in the report.

The SAPT-R presents the results in four different categories:

1. I cannot hear the any sound on this application

The iPad has a volume button that allows you to turn the volume of the app up and down and a silent button. Make

sure you check both buttons. Both the volume and the silent buttons must be turned up.
