I always take the KX bus to/from Palo Alto from/to the airport -- I RELY ON THIS BUS SERVICE, because I do not drive and can walk to the bus station. Caltrain requires TOO MANY transfers and does not run frequently.

Add more buses to this route (ie. to start service earlier and go later). I have lived in Palo Alto at this address for nearly 30 years and have used the express bus service to/from the airport almost exclusively for my personal travel and most always for business travel. This has been an excellent option to reduce driving and to serve the Palo Alto/Stanford area. Caltrain is ok, but does not run frequently enough, so that the bus is more effective transportation. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL EXPRESS BUS TO PALO ALTO! And consider adding an earlier bus (to make possible taking earlier planes). Thank you

Sam Trans is more convenient to the terminals but it's schedule is less frequent and often less convenient than BART. What improvements would help you take transit more often?: 1. A more frequent KX schedule between SF and SFO or 2. Easier access from the airport BART station to Terminals 1, 2 and 3. International terminal works fine.

I hate having to take Bart going northbound, then having to transfer to southbound to catch Caltrain. I also hate the timing -- when my flight lands in the evening or on weekends, it's ridiculous to have to wait for the next Caltrain.

I experimented on a weekend and when dropping off a friend at the airport I had my husband drop me off too so I could take BART to Caltrain home. It was a long wait since it was early in the morning. I was turned off by the hassle. Maybe during the week is better. I can't remember, but wouldn't I need a BART tix and a Caltrain pass? I have a monthly Catrain Pass. I think I could use that but just add cash to it for any BART rides, correct?

A little late, but BART to SFO was horribly, horribly built. Peninsula residents were screwed, having to take at least 3 different services to get to any terminal besides International. And from the north, where I live, it's not exactly efficient either. Taking BART to SFO takes 30 mins, despite only being 6 miles from San Francisco. Instead of making the connection to Caltrain easier, we spent billions extending BART -- which takes an inefficient, westward-swinging route down the Peninsula. Anyway. I'll stop ranting. I take BART sometimes because I live close to a BART station, but the trip takes far longer than it should. So sometimes I just take a Lyft, or even hope on Caltrain and switch back to BART. And I almost never take it from the Peninsula because getting from Millbrae Caltrain to SFO is a horrible experience. In my opinion, they should tear down BART's SFO station, and just extend the airport monorail out to Millbrae station. Would make a hell of a lot more sense. Oh well, guess some genius should have thought of that BEFORE we spent billions building BART to SFO. Also, I've traveled between SF and Palo Alto thousands of times. I have never taken the

The time I usually don't take Caltrain to BART is when I have an early morning flight. Although BART will be running, any flight before 9am is impossible to catch based on Caltrain times, especially if it's going out on the weekend. Additionally for international flights, it's quite scary to rely on public transportation in the event that there's a suicide or trains are late, leaving it too close to chance.

Fare from SFO to Millbrae is $4.05. I end up with 95c BART tickets floating around in my wallet, never used. It should be an even $4 or it should be free, like it was before the BART SFO extension debacle. The LAX connection to its transit center and the long term parking is free and the bus to almost anywhere is $1.50. On weekends the BART connections to Caltrain can be OK or dismal because of the one-hour headways on Caltrain. It's a matter of luck. Samtrans has a lower stress level but it does take longer. Caltrain VTA to San Jose is OK if I have more time. There is always the danger of a pedestrian death when using Caltrain that upsets the schedule. Grade Separate!

I would gladly ake Caltrain to the airport because I live close to San Antonio station and I take the train a lot, but the service is too infrequent and too slow for airport travel. For example consider adding a transit time of 2 hours to go a mere 30 miles, after a 7 hour flight; it is not a feasible option. Moreover, 1) if you fly in late at at night, there are NO trains southbound, 2) hauling luggage onto a Caltrain car is very difficult for a small person, because you have to climb a bunch of stairs, 3) there is little room for luggage on board, 4) even if you can opt to catch a train, you might have to wait up to an hour at night at the Milbrae station, outside, without any security. Net-net: Taking the train into SFO is sometimes feasible if you have lots of time and no interruption of service occurs, but traveling out of SFO is impractical. Maybe electrification will help but what we need: -More frequent service that stops at ALL stations -Train cars with doors that are at sidewalk level -Room for luggage on board -Coordinate BART service with train schedule We understand this is a lot to ask but there are many places in the world where this has been in place for decades, so it should be possible here too.

I previously completed this survey, I said there was no way to take a bus to the airport at a very early hour. I had not previously known about the 397. I wish I had known about it for an early flight I had from SFO about a month ago. I failed to check 511.org (my mistake!) before that trip. I now see there are northbound 397 busses that get me from San Carlos to SFO at about 2am, 3am and 4am. Also, there are southbound 397 busses leaving SFO towards Palo Alto at 2am, 3am, 4am and 5am. However, on a weekend, trying to get home (San Carlos) from SFO, there is no service between 10:21pm (final KX of the day) and 2am (first 397 of the day). That is a long time between busses. One other note about the 397 -- I believe it is widely used by apparently homeless people who have large numbers of bags and blankets with them, and sleep on the bus during its route. This is just my observation from a couple of times I have used it.

Taking the train to SFO would make so much sense, but the transfers a really goofy and time consuming! I walk 3 min to my CalTrain station, board the NB train, exit at Milbrae, take NB bart 1 stop, exit San Bruno, then get on SB bart to SFO. Can't CalTrain and BART work together so we only have to transfer once?

It's kind of annoying to have to pay almost $5 to get from the Millbrae Caltrain station to the airport on BART - it's just across the freeway, not miles and miles! Also, on the return trip, I invariably just miss the connection and have to wait almost an hour for the next train. So many times I've wished BART would arrive just a few minutes earlier! Also, (not Caltrain's responsibility, but...) Google Maps directions for getting from South Bay/Peninsula to SFO are confusing. I met a guy yesterday at the San Bruno Caltrain station who probably missed his flight for this reason. Thanks for your efforts!

The trip being faster would help. I live in San Jose and prefer to take SJC, and I usually take light rail there. When I take SFO, I try to avoid early morning trips, as it's too difficult to take transit. I have taken Supershuttle before for an early SFO departure.

Regarding BART, the primary reason I don't take it is because it doesn't run early enough (like for flights that leave at 6-7:30am) or late enough (for flights that arrive after ~11:30pm). But if my flights arrive/leave between 8am and 11pm, then I almost always take BART. I would also like to see the KX sped up to make it competitive with driving or Caltrain. Consolidating stops and having it run down the freeway more would be better. Of course, if the county governments would just invest in BRT on El Camino with traffic lights triggered by the buses, then it could run down El Camino and make great time yet still be very convenient. Finely, it's a real shame that they don't allow baggage because of the anachronistic idea that they can't compete with cabs; that is an out-dated car-centric policy which must be ended. We must be doing everything possible to get people out of cars -- even cabs -- not given cars preference. Finally, more frequent Caltrain service, especially outside commute hours, is needed for more people to use it to get to SFO. It's ridiculous to expect people to wait 1 hour. 30 minutes is already pushing it, but I think many people would wait that long. Caltrain needs to go back to the schedule they briefly had were trains came every 1/2 hour outside of

The KX is a great service to the airport from the Peninsula - and cheap! From anywhere in San Mateo Co. it is only $2 to SFO. The bus goes right into the airport, making 3 or 4 stops. From in front of the San Carlos train station, it only takes 45 minutes or less to the airport. One problem with taking luggage on the KX is that you have to negotiate the bus stairs with your luggage. That can be a real problem. The KX schedule needs to be expanded, not reduced. There should be more frequent buses and their schedule should start earlier and end much later to accommodate travelers catching or arriving on early morning or night flights. I don't take Caltrain to SFO because the connection from the train to SFO is so awkward, especially with luggage.

There needs to be a direct link from CalTrain to SFO for transit to be desirable. We live in Mountain View (within easy walk to San Antonio CalTrain). For a family of four, I think it will remain difficult to us to use transit to SFO because of luggage and dealing with children. This time, we used SuperShuttle for our departure because family ride was not available, and got picked up by family on the return. Individually, I have used the CalTrain/BART and CalTrain/SamTrans connections, but it is a long process. The old CalTrain SFO shuttle bus was better than BART or SamTrans, especially since BART stopped direct Millbrae to SFO service.

We've given up on transit for now. If there was ne direct service that we could catch from the San Jose area to SFO we would consider it. Super Shuttle takes way too long and transit requires 3 different transfers, it's just not worth the hassle and doesn't save us any money.

The old CalTrain-SFO free shuttle worked like a dream, was perfect in every respect. While it was in operation, I used public transportation to SFO for 90% of my trips. The current CalTrain-BART connection is a nightmare: confusing, time-consuming, unreliable, and unreasonably expensive (thanks to the high BART fare for what is essential a crosswalk across 101). Now, although I feel guilty about it, I almost never use public transportation.

It needs to be easy and attracting: - Need public transportation that runs more frequently to better match take-off/arrival schedules. Caltrain now fails miserably with its reduced schedule. - Connection from Caltrain and buses should run more frequently (as per free VTA route 10 to SJC) - Waiting outside with luggage, especially at night is cold, damp, and risky. There needs to be a more secure way to wait for a transfer unless they run every 15 minutes or so.

Late trains are killing when there is an hour wait between trains on weekends. The up and down and up and down at Millbrae between BART and Caltrain with luggage is a real hassle. It takes a very long time to take and transfer between 3 rail systems to get to the airport. Honestly, Caltrain to cab is a lot more direct. Why not Caltrain to BUS to the airport? That would be a relative breeze.

I prefer the KX to Caltrain + BART -- it's simpler, faster, and much cheaper. Also much, much cheaper than SuperShuttle. BUT: on weekends it's not very frequent, and service ends by 10:15 pm, which is still better than Caltrain on Sunday evenings, when the last train leaves Millbrae at 9:39 pm. Scheduling later trips would help, although I know that it's probably financially impossible. More frequent KXs (NOT fewer!) would also help.

We had a friend coming in and she took a taxi to Millbrae Cal train then south. Looked at the other public transit options in detail. They all took too long and were too complicated. If it is not simple and efficient (ie good connections) it is worthless. Sometimes political compromises worse than nothing. Not allowing baggage on a bus to and from the airport is absurd. This is the type of thing which drives out of town travelers bananas and helps to kill tourism. Imagine showing up and waiting for a bus at the airport then not being allowed on because you have luggage!!!! Also since when does a $5 bus ride compete with a $60 door to door taxi. Bottom line if you can't do it right you might as well drop it.

Reliability is not the issue. The lack of early morning service IS. We frequently book early morning (6 - 7 am) departures. There is no Caltrain service at 3:30 - 4:00 am when we normally leave for the airport in order to allow time for check-in and security. If we (rarely) have a departure from SFO within a suitable time window, Caltrain + BART is GREAT. At the other end of our most frequent travels, we frequently take advantage of the DC Metro system. Let's hear it for earlier northbound Caltrain service! Of course, a similar issue exists with BART...

When taking the BART/Caltrain link back to San Jose from SFO, I am usually coming from Europe or Japan/Korea. To those who have experienced transit in these places, that should say it all. The transition from these systems -- especially Japan, where a 3-10 minute service interval time is common -- is slightly rough when waiting for BART at SFO. Yet BART is arguably the best of my trip back to San Jose Diridon. From BART, there's a nice walk up, and then back down a towering flight of stairs at the Caltrain platform -- is there an escalator? It's usually broken if there is, because I always remember walking it. At least there is a nice little break at the top of the platform, where I have to buy a train ticket because the Clipper system has either expired my funds or the card has less than the minimum balance. It doesn't need to be like this, I think -- in Korea and Japan, for instance you can always get on the train, even with no money on the card, and you are forced to remedy the situation at your end point. I realize this is not an option on Caltrain because of the way ticketing is set up as proof of purchase. The systems in many other countries also offer a discount on fare when using a card, and many many convenient ways to charge your card, something that is a ridiculously difficult process with Clipper... but, alas, it is new and experiencing growing pains. Caltrain ticket in hand, I watch as my train heads out of the station below me. Poor connection timing? I head back down the stairs to the platform, where it's always a nice time, waiting an hour on the cold, windy Caltrain platform. Probably unlike most, I actually enjoy this part, because it gives me time to decompress and easy into the lackluster, poorly planned, tangled mess of a system that is Bay Area transit. I recall, for instance, standing at a bus stop in Seoul, where my Android -- which is getting free wifi from the bus stop -- offers me a list of the buses that are on their way to my location, where they are headed to, and when their ETA is, real time, not based on a 'schedule' which buses and trains can never keep to in the Bay Area anyway, exception being a punctual, if infrequent Caltrain. At that same Korean bus stop, I would usually turn round to find an interactive screen, allowing me to find local restaurants, businesses, and to plan my trip with a few taps of my finger. This is all

The BART connection is very difficult and time consuming, having to go one stop to get on another BART to go to the airport and then transfer to the airport train. I have almost missed my flight 3 times so I am hesitant to use this transport. Also on off peak hours and weekends Caltrain is infrequent (and so is the KX).

More rapid transit time, and an actual direct connection from Caltrain to SFO. Whyever did BART change its routing such that people have to transfer at San Bruno? The whole stated purpose of that transfer was so that BART is "your SFO airport connection", as the announcement goes.

More direct BART trains would be a huge help. Transferring at San Bruno adds significant time and also stressful uncertainty when I'm trying to make a Caltrain train. It would also be nice if the BART arrivals to and departures from Millbrae were better coordinated with the trains going between SJ and Millbrae. As it is, they seem timed to meet trains going to SF. This makes no sense, given that passengers can take BART the entire way from SF but must use Caltrain from SJ. Better yet, I would love to see the direct bus shuttle return. As it is, I sometimes take a cab between SFO and Caltrain when I can't afford to wait for BART.

The same as for daily commuting or trips to San Francisco - more frequent service after rush hour. With 15-20 minute train intervals with coordinated transit connections, using Caltrain would be a no-brainer for most of my travel up and down the peninsula. 30 minute intervals with coordinated transit connections would be tolerable and I could make it work. The current one hour intervals with no coordination is a no-brainer for using the car unless the schedules just happen to match my schedule - which almost never happens.

I sometimes get worried taking mass-transit to the airport as there can be unexpected delays (in Caltrain or BART). Then you are left worrying on the platform that you are going to miss your plane. The VTA/Caltrain/BART (from the South Bay) is not viable after daytime weekday transit hours. The wait can be long for Caltrain at Millbrae on the return south (back home). And VTA (route 51) stops running at 7pm, requiring a one-mile walk after dark (not safe) (from Mountain View Caltrain to the VTA 51 stop at Leong Drive). Also, VTA route 51 does not run on the weekends at all. During daytime, especially during the commuter hours VTA/Caltrain/BART is OK, but that doesn't always work for the flights. Then I take SuperShuttle. If VTA 51 ran later and on weekends, I would take VTA/Caltrain/BART to the airport more often. It would also help to eliminate the two transfers (requiring the wait times) from Caltrain to BART. There used to be a bus shuttle from Caltrain/BART in Millbrae to SFO; that was much better than it is now.

It's hard to get to a Bart or Caltrain station in the whole bay area, if one doesn't live right next to it. If you add Taxi to Bart + Caltrain the SuperShuttle is faster and more affordable, reliable and comfortable. I used to take Caltrain+Bart in the past, but one can even bike in less than 70min from Palo Alto to Milbrae (without luggage). Quick and affordable shuttle service between Milbrae station and SFO is needed. Ideally, the SFO AirTrain would be connected to Caltrain and lift travellers free of charge to SFO and back. Another annoying thing about Caltrain+Bart combination is that you need to buy two different tickets at different types of machines. It's quite expensive and it takes time. Clipper card is no solution for visitors.

Also, I AVOID taking KX into/out of San Francisco during commute hours, especially between 5-6pm because it is stuck in freeway traffic and very slow -- during those times, I usually take BART or Caltrain, depending where I am in SF. Ironically, the KX is most efficient in the afternoon and evening and weekend (the times Samtrans is planning to cut). Note: I typically ride the KX bewteen Redwood City and SFO or San Francisco (south of Market area).

As residents of San Francisco, we take BART to and from SFO and we love it! One improvement would be to run BART earlier, especially on weekends. We have to take taxis when we need to be at SFO early in the morning before BART service is available. Another improvement would be to set up a relationship and dispatch system between BART and taxis so that you could call a taxi to pick you up when your train reaches your home BART station (e.g., when it is raining, or you have lots of luggage).

Caltrain isn't frequent enough (and doesn't run early or late enough) during weekends to accomodate flights to/from the east coast. Caltrain plus one BART transfer was fine but we really despise the newer double rides on BART. And we are always perplexed on which platform to board at and have to ask someone or resort to following the crowd at the BART/Caltrain connection. Caltrain/BART used to be great for us but now its too troublesome when there's more than one person to travel. Caltrain once closed the doors on me when I was unloading four bags for my family at the Millbrae station. Caltrain needs to believe in providing useful/helpful/understanding *service* rather than rushing lots of trains around.

Transfering from caltrain to bart can be a real burden. If you have a flight during the day or before 7 or 8 pm (can't remember which) you have to transfer at san bruno to get to sfo. Coming back from a trip is much morse, though. Taking airtrain to bart, to caltrain can take such a long time if you happen to have just missed a caltrain. It's a frustrating process, but I prefer it to taking super shuttle (they're not so professional and their driving can be terrifying- I have takne the KX from Menlo Park to SFO before, and it's actually a surprisingly good method of trans. It's not the fastest, but it's so reasonably priced, is very direct (no transfers) and feels relatively safe. I'd be disappointed if they did away with that option.

Transferring at San Bruno between Caltrain and BART is absolutely egregious. At worst it can take over 30 minutes between arriving at Millbrae and arriving at the airport. (That's the reason that one time I decided to walk the 2 miles from Millbrae instead, over an overpass and on a road with no shoulder.) Whenever there is no direct BART service between SFO and Millbrae, there must be some kind of shuttle bus service to take people to and from Caltrain. Otherwise, it's super ridiculous. It's not even that hard to synchronize with the Caltrain schedule; there aren't that many trains in a day. I would also use the SamTrans buses more if they had more coverage of off-peak hours (such as early Sunday morning). I always forget about them.

For start that rule that you can only have carry on luggage on the KX bus is completely ridiculous and unacceptable in a progressive region like the bay area. The Caltrain-BART connection is a disgrace. The left hand clearly ain't talking to the right. On many occassions I get off Caltrain in Millbrae and hurry over to the bart platform only to have BART close the doors on us as we are loading. And the design of the Millbrae Station?? Would be lovely if we lived in Miami. No shelter from wind, rain (I'm pretty sure the mesh top lets water through), sound of trains blasting by - it's really awful. And because BART and Caltrain don't communicate, I get stuck there a lot.

We ussually fly from San Jose. Take cross country trips via SF if I must. Had not thought about the bus. Would need a ride to the train/bart station. Would be easier with short flights because less luggage. if not traveling at peak hours there is limited service and transfers might not work. I should pay more attention to see if this is really true.

Level boarding on Caltrain - boarding two adults with one bag each, plus a baby and a stroller would be hard enough. Climbing 4 steps with a handrail smack in the middle of the entryway is madness. Maybe when the kid grows up... Eliminate the oddball transfer at San Bruno during the BART trip from Milbrae to SFO. Faster service with shorter headways on weekends, evenings, and mid-day. Note - I have a Caltrain monthly pass, and live .5 mi from a station. It couldn't be easier for me to take transit to SFO or SJC, but I would only do it if I were traveling alone with a single piece of luggage. I've only taken transit to SFO once, and that was to pick up someone's car. This was done to save me from driving them to the airport - very sad.

BART to SFO is honestly the best way to get from the City to the airport. It's shocking to me that many people would rather pay upwards of $50 for taxi fare or $75 for Uber when BART is such an easy option and a whole lot less expensive. I avoid flying out of OAK due to the lackluster AirBART shuttle bus from the Coliseum station, but I'm confident the new Oakland Airport Connector will be a much better option. Eager to try it out once it opens next year.

In order for me to take a flight from SFO I have to ride my bicycle to work (with my luggage, which for this reason is usually little), park my bike at work, walk to the caltrain station in MV, take the caltrain, take the Bart to SFO. On the way back I usually take a taxi from the Mnt View caltrain station. It just sucks.

The bart connection is horrible. The infrastructure is there... just taxi lobbying to keep it from happening. People should be able to park at Milbrae and bart right over! Or Caltrain to Mbrae and bart on over. Free the people! Let bart run without transfers from SFO-milbrae as it was designed.

Better coordination between modes. Timing to make connection not good. More direct path rather than BART-BART transfer Easier way to buy tickets MORE FREQUENT TRAINS - if we miss a particular train, there can be a full hour before the next one, LONGER HOURS - too much risk of missing BART and trains altogether, esp. after overseas flight. Better signage - even as an English speaker/reader, the signage is nearly incomprehensible. It means nothing to know that Track (or Platform) x is a certain direction. What would be more meaningful is clear signage for the full paths to get north/south (indicating also the San Francisco/San Jose) directions). This means from SFO through each and every connection to get north and to get south. And the reverse.

Bart is definitely awkward when the Millbrae > San Bruno > SFO route is active. It would have been nicer to have the Blue / Red train on the same level as the BART train, and based on the current usage of the BART tracks, would have been feasible. The KX route not accepting luggage is particular obnixous, as taxis do not have child seats, and we would have liked to have taken the bus (as it has more operating hours), but is impossible with our travel patterns (child + luggage).

I used to regularly take Caltrain to the airport when there was a free shuttle from the Millbrae station to the airport. The shuttle coordinated with the Caltrain (at least there wasn't a long wait) and didn't take long to get to the airport. The BART connection is a disaster. BART and Caltrain don't coordinate, there are multiple transfers, and it takes too long. Given the high likelihood of failing to catch two or more connections, it simply isn't reliable enough.

I'd like to see a connection from CalTrain to SFO that does not require another fare plus inconvenient transfers. For a while in 2010, SFO operated an "employee" shuttle to Millbrae that anyone could ride to avoid the BART rip-off fare. They should bring that back.

Caltrain doesn't run early enough to make some early morning flights. Caltrain was 15 minutes late on the way to SFO on 12/20/2012 and 25 minutes late on the way from SFO on 12/30/2012. We waited 1.5 hours between BART and Caltrain on 12/30/2012. The late notice wasn't posted until 10 minutes after the train was due. Had we known about the delay right away, we would have hired a taxi to go home to Mountain View. I liked it better when there was a free shuttle bus between Caltrain and SFO. The CNG taxis (sedans) that serve the airport don't have enough luggage room in their trunks for a family of 4.

The last weekday morning Baby Bullet and limited stop trains end at 8:03AM. All trains become local after that time and the travel time from SJ Diridon to Millbrae takes too long. And since BART does not go directly into SFO, it is necessary to take a northbound BART train from Millbrae to San Bruno & change to a southbound SFO train. Too involved and too time consuming. BART should have NEVER gone into the airport. An airport people mover should have been built from SFO to the Millbrae station. It would be more convenient and it would have been cheaper to build.

For someone who doesn't do this very often, it's very difficult to figure out a transit option. You have to get off at a certain station, get on to BART, backtrack (which isn't intuitive when you're figuring this out)... I'm a reasonably intelligent person and I messed it up last time and had to call for an emergency taxi. (Yes, I even used 511.org.) This, after probably spending two hours trying to assess the different transit options (in conjunction with trying to determine which airport to fly out of). I almost missed my flight. Also, we need more express trains also so that it doesn't take as long.

Add early morning BART rides on weekends. The earliest train on a Sunday leaves at 8:01 am from Millbrae which is not in time for early flight departures. In my opinion the earliest train should leave at 4:30 am to allow me to get to the airport for early departure times. Also having early CalTrains runs on both weekdays and weekends to get me to the Millbrae BART station in time to get to early morning flights would be nice.
