About 60 club members, from both the SFBA andSacramento, sections visited Mercedes­Benz Researchand Development North America (MBRDNA) in SunnyvaleFebruary 21st to see some pretty incredible concept cars,and get a glimpse MB's vision of the future oftransportation. MBRDNA president and CEO ArwedNiestroj began the day with an overview of MBRDNA andthe projects at Sunnyvale which are keeping Mercedes­Benz in the forefront of the revolution connecting cars,computers, and information technology.

Five divisions of MBRDNA are located at the Sunnyvalesite: Advanced User Experience Design; AutonomousDriving; Business Innovation; ConnectedCar, Telematics, and User Interaction; Society andCustomer. Each division is focused on some aspect of"mobility solutions". For example, using information aboutroad conditions, weather, routes, traffic signals,pedestrians and other vehicles to make driving more safeand efficient, or meeting community needs throughmultiple modes of transportation, from mass transit tobicycles. The Sunnyvale site also manages MB'sparticipation in the different industry/governmentstandards groups who are developing the rules andprotocols that allow this all to happen.

Projects highlighted during the day ranged from theF015 Autonomous Car, to the Boost by Benz, programfor youth mobility.

The F015 Autonomous Car. This incredible car of the future (Mercedes suggests anintroduction date of the the technologies featured in thisvehicle of about 2030) was recently demonstrated at theConsumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, driving itself onlocal roads and communicating with pedestrians and othercars. Once the F015 receives its destination informationpassengers have complete freedom to turn the seatstoward the center of the car and relax, socialize, work orread while the car sorts out the route and works throughtraffic. The F015 can travel more than 600 miles betweenfuel stops with zero emissions from its battery/fuel celldrive system.

Boost by Benz: A program aimed at exploring solutions for youthtransportation employing Mercedes­Benz vans, traineddrivers, and mobile apps to efficiently, economically, andsafely transport active pre­driving age youth to theirdifferent activities. A pilot program is operational in PaloAlto (lucky kids!).

The 150 employees at the Sunnyvale site are onlyabout 1% of the Mercedes­Benz R&D employees world­wide, but this small group has a big impact on the cars ofthe future. With a highly intercultural and internationalteam, the Sunnyvale site is providing a constant exchangeof ideas and learning between German and Americangroups working on these issues.

COMING UP IN MARCH: Mar 14­Vintage Trailers and Race Cars, Felton/ScottsValley

Great event for kids!The Canepa facility does both race car preparationand "Pebble Beach" quality restorations. Lots ofprojects underway. Lunch will be at the Oak Tree Ristorante, a hiddengem in Felton with authentic Italian cuisine. Time to take in Henry Cowell Park, Seymour MarineCenter, or other Santa Cruz attractions after event!
