Academic Development:High School Credit Classes at SRMS: Core Classes

The following core classes earn students high school credit:

Core Classes

Algebra 1 Honors*

Geometry Honors*

Earth Space Science Honors

Physical Science Honors

• Algebra and Geometry have an End of Course Exam that is worth 30% of the course grade.

EOC assessments are computer-based, criterion-referenced assessments that measure

the Florida Standards (FS) or the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) The

EOC takes the place of the FSA and is administered in two 90-minute sessions over two days.

• Civics is not a high school credit class, but has an EOC.

Academic Development:High School Credit Classes at SRMS: Elective Classes

The following elective classes earn students high school credit:

• In order to be considered for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship (Florida Academic

Scholarship (FAS)/Florida Medallion Scholarship (FMS), student must take 2 years of a

World Language. This must be sequential and in the same language. Other offerings

available through FLVS or OCVS.

• The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program establishes lottery-funded scholarships

to reward Florida high school graduates for high academic achievement. For more

Academic Development:

State and District Testing Requirements

FSA

➢ English Language Arts (ELA) has a written and reading component. They are taken on different days.

Students must complete both components to receive a FSA-ELA score.

➢ Math – students who take 6th grade math, 7th grade math, Pre-Algebra or Pre-Algebra/Intensive Math block

Statewide Science – Statewide for 8th grade only.

End of Course Exams (EOCs)

➢ End of Course Exams account for 30% of the student’s final grade.

➢ All 7th graders will take a Civics EOC.

➢ High school leveled classes that currently require an EOC include: Algebra 1, Geometry and Biology.

Students must earn a level 3 or higher on the EOC for high school leveled classes in order to receive high

school credit. (All students taking Algebra and Algebra/Pre-Algebra Block take the FSA Algebra EOC).

Common Final Exam (CFEs)

➢ CFEs grades (assessments and teacher scored rubrics) count for 20% of students’ overall course grade.

➢ Semester 1 CFE’s are administered in PE, 6th & 7th grade Agriscience, Exploring Technology & Career

Planning (PLTW), Learning Strategies, and Social Personal classes.

➢ Semester 2 CFE’s (assessments and teacher scored rubrics) are administered in: ALL electives (semester

and full year), 6th and 8th grade social studies, all science classes, Learning Strategies and Social Personal

classes.

➢ All CFE’s must be completed during the same academic school year during the testing window set by the

district.

➢ If a student does not take a CFE, a 59% will be factored into their final grade (semester and/or year).

PE and Career Planning Requirements

Physical Education

Physical education is required

for every year of middle school.

Career and Education Planning

is an internet based, personalized

academic and career plan for the

student.

The district-wide program is called

Naviance. Guidance teaches it

through Social Studies.

Naviance is a college and career readiness

computer based program that helps

districts and schools align student

strengths and interests to post-secondary

goals, improving student outcomes and

connecting learning to life.

Lessons will be taught over the course of

the next 2 months for all grade levels.

Students will work on:

◆ Begin building a resume and

◆ Exploring various career options

Teen Safety Matters

➢ MBF Teen Safety Matters™ is a comprehensive, research-based, prevention

education program that educates and empowers teens and all relevant adults

with information and strategies to prevent, recognize, and respond

appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, all types of abuse and other digital

dangers.

➢ The Guidance Team delivers 3 TSM lessons

through science classes. The lessons are

comprised of the following topics:

▪ Emotional Safety

▪ Physical Safety

▪ Digital Safety

➢ Parents have the option to opt out of these

lessons. An opt out form will be sent home.
