Spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean give this region its evocative name. Stretching over 50 kilometres of pristine coastline, the Cities of Stirling, Joondalup and Wanneroo known as the Sunset Coast, represent the ultimate destination for sun lovers in Perth.
Just a short drive from Perth’s CBD, the Sunset Coast's buzzing outdoor culture includes beach front esplanades and marinas with alfresco cafés and restaurants, extensive walking and cycling trails with stunning ocean views and plenty of adventure sports on offer. Less than 20 minutes from the Perth CBD and Fremantle come and explore the City of Stirling’s sunset coast and take in its beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and many parks and reserves, including the interactive whale playground.
SwimWhether it’s some down time for yourself or a family fun day out that you’re after, the City’s 7.5km of pristine coastline has it all. Mettams Pool, North Beach and Watermans Bay all offer sheltered beaches with crystal clear water ideal for swimming and snorkelling, while Scarborough and Brighton beaches offer larger areas to enjoy the sun, sand and breathtaking scenery. All beaches have pathway and pedestrian access, making it an ideal location to explore either by foot or bike.
You can also visit the world-class Scarborough Beach Pool. The first beachside pool in Western Australia, this iconic facility features a geothermally heated 12 lane lap pool and separate leisure pool, as well as a range of fitness programs. It also features a café and is next door to a variety of dining options.
SurfJust 20 minutes from the Perth City centre, Scarborough Beach is arguably Perth’s most popular beach. With public transport links, there is no excuse not to visit. Neighbouring Trigg Beach is home to Perth’s most consistent surf break, with local spots like Watermans Bay, Mettams Pool and Trigg Point also renowned for their surf. Lessons and board hire are readily available from local surf schools and surf shops. Scarborough, Brighton and Trigg are all kite-surfing permitted beaches.
StayScarborough has a range of accommodation options to choose from, suited to every budget. From backpacker accommodation through to luxury hotels, it’s all conveniently located within the Scarborough precinct which means you are minutes from the beach and action.
Eat, drink and be entertainedYou’ll be spoilt for choice with the many cafes and bars overlooking the ocean. The area is home to an ever-growing number of bars, restaurants and cafés, suited to all tastes and styles. The venues offer comfortable and inviting areas that showcase the scenery from sunrise to sunset and offer everything from casual fish and chips through to fine dining and late-night drinks.
Swap the sand on your feet for shoes and head to the Beaufort Street precinct which boasts an impressive selection of restaurants, bars, pubs, independent stores, boutiques, fashion, homewares, music and live performances.
Entertainment on the Sunset Coast is plentiful with Innaloo Cinema Complex, and the historic Astor Theatre on Beaufort Street, boasting live performances and cinema shows. Scarborough boasts the state’s only beachside amphitheatre for live entertainment in the spring and summer months.
ExploreWorking off your holiday indulgence is easy on the Sunset Coast. The northern patch of the Sunset Coast is the culturally and environmentally rich City of Wanneroo.
Home to intriguing historical sites and some of the state’s most pristine and accessible nature reserves in the City of Wanneroo, you can explore dunes, limestone cliffs and bushland in stunning national and regional parks. Get a close look at native flora and fauna along beautiful walking trails, like the Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail, for an encounter you will always remember.
Yanchep National ParkYanchep National Park is famous for its scenic beauty, picnic spots, walking trails and limestone caves. All this, only 45 minutes north of Perth City. For an amazing adventure, explore its spectacular caves.
The Park is renowned for having one of Australia’s largest koala colonies and a superb programme of Aboriginal cultural experiences. At Wangi Mia (‘Talking Place’), Indigenous guides share culture with visitors about the local Nyoongar way of life.
The Park is also home to the beautiful Yanchep Inn, set in the rolling bushland with views over Loch McNess. The Inn offers a range of dining and stay options.
Located near the Park’s koala enclosure, the award-winning Chocolate Drops Tearooms offer an array of specialised home-made chocolates, snacks and meals.
Family Fun Mini golf is an entertaining way for families to enjoy the serene surrounds of Wanneroo Botanic Gardens. You can even tee off at night, with glow in the dark golf balls! Enjoy a drink or bite to eat at Leapfrogs, which specialises in craft beers, boutique wines, great coffee and exceptional food.
Discover heritageThe Wanneroo Regional Museum features the recollections of local residents, which helps to create a rich tale of the early years in Wanneroo. Fascinating displays interpret the region’s evolution from an open land of lakes and traditional Aboriginal lifestyle to the thriving modern society of today.
Wanneroo's oldest remaining residence, Cockman House was built in the 1860s. The cottage is a step back in time for those who enjoy bygone eras.
Fresh produceMarket gardening is an important part of the history of the Wanneroo area and is still a distinctive feature of the landscape. Throughout the year it’s easy to pull off the road and enjoy delicious fresh produce direct from the grower. Sample strawberries, grapes, olives and fine wines.
Discover The Marina, MindarieThe Marina’s Mediterranean-style boardwalk leads you to high quality cafés and restaurants, including a microbrewery and family friendly pub serving sea-fresh fish and chips. This is an awesome place to sit back and take in the view or try your luck at one of the many water sports and activities available.
Exploring local shipwrecksIn the 19th and 20th centuries, several ships succumbed to treacherous reefs leaving the coastline scattered with shipwrecks. These wrecks create a rich and intriguing maritime history that’s reflected in suburb names like Alkimos and Eglinton. Divers today can explore these historic artefacts in an underwater adventure. But you don’t have to get wet to see a wreck –the remains of 1917’s Alex T. Brown are still visible offshore, above the high-water mark.
Discover more on the coastlineCast a line or grab your snorkel and experience the beautiful Yanchep Lagoon or head further north to the peaceful coastal community of Two Rocks which features a quiet marina and boat harbour.
