Vibe A little bit cozy shack a little bit “baba” cool. This proposal reflects the spirit of Silver Lake and is seen as a relaxing spill out for the vibrant street life that surrounds Sunset Junction. It’s the place you go when there is no room to sit at Intelligentsia, or you go to read your magazines and newspaper from Circle Books, or while Jiffy Lube services your car. It’s the place you walk to after too many tacos from Malo or steak frite from Stella or to many drinks from 4100 Bar ……….this is Sunset Junction’s chill pad for that long-time art, music, and idea-friendly neighbor- hood. Organization Reminiscent of a Parisian parterre, the 1500-square-foot community space is casual and uncluttered using a minimal palette of materials to define a range of spaces varying in size and intimacy. Set around a discrete set of design elements: The Pea Gravel Parterre, the Pads, Boarder Benches, and Luxembourg Chairs. Each design element features a discrete identification tag to venerate the names of prominent Silver Lake people that have shaped the unique character and identity of this place. Materials For economy as well as local flavor, all of the seating is salvage from unlikely sources. The border bench is from cut tree trunks recouped from hurricane struck areas. The Luxembourg chairs are reclaimed from Intelligentsia. The pads are covered in recovered grey and white tiles from Nicaragua. A very limited palette of plant and tree species depicts a cool blue as California olive trees, lavender and rosemary perfume the air. Smart stud photovoltaic lighting is attached to the pea gravel ground collecting solar energy during the day and illuminating the space at night. Maintenance Little to no maintenance is the mantra of this scheme. The plant and tree species are hardy but speak to ethos of California coolness that finds its roots in the Mediterranean. There are no lawns to cut, and plants that hate water. Budget The design scheme embraces the slogan “Make do with” and aspires to working towards a project that costs half of $100,000. bit “baba” cool. This proposal reflects the spirit of Silver Lake and is seen as a relaxing
