Sunshine, Bright Smiles and

Reunion Joy

Chairman's MessageAs we approach the end of 2018, where the holiday season is just around the corner, reunions are set to create significant moments for families and friends. I hope residents in Jalan Besar Town can enjoy good meals together in celebration of upcoming festivals like Christmas. We have highlighted eateries whose owners cherish heartwarming gatherings, and there’s something special for those who dine in groups at their outlets. Turn to pages 14 and 15 to find out more!

On these same pages, we offer a guide on our website about upcycling – the art of creatively reusing waste materials to transform them into new treasures. Personalised handicrafts mean so much more when they are crafted with love. Once we realise the “magic” we have in giving unwanted materials a new lease of life, we can begin to embrace environmentally-friendly habits and live green.

Festive seasons normally come with increased waste, so let us keep in mind the dedication of our Town Council workers in keeping our town clean and pleasant. As a caring resident, you can also do more to keep your households clean and safe by removing bulky items responsibly. If you need help getting rid of items such as unwanted furniture, turn to page 13.

Lastly, I would like to wish everyone Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2019 ahead!

Dr Lily NeoChairman

Musim perayaan biasanya membawa peningkatan buangan sampah.

Some 1,000 residents had a bright and early start to their Sunday morning at the Jalan Besar GRC & Potong Pasir SMC Carnival 2018 on 1 July. Held at the open field near the Kallang MRT station, many present had a great time enjoying the array of fun activities available.

While many took part in interesting activities and upcycling workshops, others thronged the Farmers’ Market, where a rich variety of fresh organic produce was being sold. From stingless bee honey to humongous 30cm-long green chilli, there was lots of interesting produce for residents to explore.

The carnival was also a great opportunity for residents to see all five of their MPs having fun together. MPs for Jalan Besar GRC Prof Yaacob Ibrahim, Mr Heng Chee How, Ms Denise Phua and Dr Lily Neo, and MP for Potong Pasir Mr Sitoh Yih Pin were so sporting that they joined a team of dancers to perform hit Chinese pop song Hai Cao Wu (Seaweed Dance) on stage.

Prof Yaacob said the carnival was a wonderful event that showcased strong community bonding. He added that the Farmers’ Market provided residents the chance to learn more about healthy eating and urban farming. “Initiatives like this show how we can come together as a nation and work on different ways to improve our quality of living,” he said.

Celebrating Youthful Innocence

A day of play and learning was how kids in Jalan Besar GRC & Potong Pasir SMC celebrated their Children’s Day this year. The hardcourt beside Kallang Community Club came alive on 7 October as the grounds for the Jalan Besar GRC & Potong Pasir SMC Kids Carnival, which was attended by some 1,000 residents.

Children were enthralled by gravity-defying backflips during a Chinese martial arts performance, and were equally entertained by an Indian dance performance, as well as a magic show. They also had a whale of a time at the bouncy castles. Amid the fun and laughter, they also learnt useful upcycling skills, transforming used glass jars and Tetra Pak packaging into beautiful snow globes and eco coin purses!

Families also made a beeline for the Town Council's photo booth, where they could use props to add a dash of quirkiness to their photos and keep them as mementos of the day. MPs for Jalan Besar GRC Prof Yaacob Ibrahim, Mr Heng Chee How, Ms Denise Phua and Dr Lily Neo attended the event.

Digging into spots of freshly dug soil, residents from all walks of life helped plant 10 Happiness Tree saplings around Block 114 McNair Road on 4 November 2018. The meaningful activity brought the residents much fun and laughter as they joined their MPs during the Jalan Besar GRC and Potong Pasir SMC Tree Planting Day 2018.

After planting the saplings, MPs Prof Yaacob Ibrahim, Mr Heng Chee How, Ms Denise Phua, Dr Lily Neo, and Mr Sitoh Yih Pin took watering cans and guided children through plant watering duties as well.

Planting Trees Sows Seeds of Happiness

Resident Madam Hasmah Jafar, 57, had fun with her grandson. “It’s my first time helping to plant a tree together with so many people. It’s nice to do something meaningful like this because we are beautifying the environment together,” she shared.

Another resident Mr Ong Zhen Ting, 37, attended the event with his wife and three children, aged four to eight. “We need more trees in our urban jungle, so it’s good that my kids can learn the importance of planting trees today. It’s also good to get our young involved in community events like this so that they can bond and interact with others,” he said.

Tucked away on the rooftop of a HDB development, the aptly named community garden Sky Garden@Kallang Trivista is officially open.

Kolam Ayer MP Prof Yaacob Ibrahim officiated the opening event at Block 8 Upper Boon Keng Road on 30 September 2018.

Participants had a ball of a time taking part in activities such as caricature drawing, Zumba workout and eco-

printing which involves the use of flowers and leaves to create T-shirt designs with no chemicals involved.

During the event, Prof Yaacob congratulated residents who tended to the community garden, as it won gold at NParks' Community in Bloom Awards 2018 when it was only seven months old.

Sky Garden@Kallang Trivista was among seven other gold winners from Jalan Besar Town, in addition to five silver and two bronze winners.

Keeping Fit by the Bay

More than 500 residents enjoyed an early exercise session and fun walk during the One Community Fiesta Walk on 30 September 2018.

Joined by Kampong Glam MP Ms Denise Phua, they started their journey from Gardens by the Bay to Marina Barrage.

Although it was a short walk, the journey was punctuated by one breathtaking view after another at these two waterfront attractions.

After reaching their destination, residents relaxed and spent time winding down by watching stage performances, admiring a ˝mermaid˝ and kite flying.

Reliving Good Old Times at New Pavilion

Our Big Family and Best Home

The new pavilion near Block 119 Potong Pasir Avenue 1 bustled with activity on 3 June 2018 as it hosted residents who had come to witness its launch. Officiating the pavilion’s grand opening was MP for Potong Pasir Mr Sitoh Yih Pin, who shared that the pavilion stood next to a community garden containing 50 plots of land.

Mr David Liew, 45, a Potong Pasir resident since 1984, said: “The pavilion is a good venue for hosting events. This creates opportunities for neighbours to get together and bond.”

Another resident, Madam Tan Meng Kheng, 67, observed that the pavilion is spacious and well-ventilated. “I can see that this will be a popular place for residents to get together,” she noted.

The launch was held alongside the “Good Old Times” celebration, which saw residents enjoying snacks and songs of yesteryear. Children’s laughter filled the air as they tried their hands at personal mobility devices and motorised toy cars.

Remember the “5Cs”? Instead of representing coveted material possessions, they have been redefined by Dr Lily Neo as a guide to becoming a more gracious society. “Practise the 5Cs to be more Cordial, Courteous, Caring, Considerate and Cultured,” shared Dr Neo, MP for Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng, during the Family Day Carnival 2018 on 16 September.

The Embracing Parenthood programme and upcycling workshops that day certainly celebrated the “Caring” aspect of family life and conservation respectively.

Spinning coasters out of scrapped fabric at the upcycling workshop, Ms Chow Khuan Hoy, 71, said: “I enjoy doing this. It keeps my mind agile.”

Inspired by the various eco-friendly initiatives, Ms Leong Su San, 56, declared: “I will dispose of used mineral water bottles and cans in recycling bins for a start.”

Attendees also witnessed Dr Neo living out the “Cultured” aspect of her vision for the community through her rendition of golden oldies such as Teresa Teng’s Tian Mi Mi (Sweet as Honey).

Cake cutting ceremonies, block parties and carnivals -- we've highlighted heartwarming moments that took place during these lively events in Jalan Besar GRC and Potong Pasir SMC.

Triple Joy in Whampoa Towner Estate

Upgrades for both their homes and neighbourhood are in store for residents of Blocks 101 to 107 Towner Road through the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP), Home Improvement Programme (HIP) and Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE).

More than 80% of residents at the estate voted strongly in favour of the upgrading programmes in May during the consensus gathering exercise, which was officially launched by MP for Jalan Besar GRC (Whampoa), Mr Heng Chee How.

As the flats are more than 30 years old, HIP improvements such as repairs to spalling concrete and installation of new clothes drying racks are welcome news to residents. The NRP, implemented by Jalan Besar Town Council, will bring improved connectivity and more greenery to the estate through covered linkways and community gardens, amongst other projects.

Resident Mr Sarjit Singh, 71, was excited about the exercise stations, one of the Town Council’s planned facilities. “It reflects a wise use of shared spaces to benefit a wide group of residents,” he said.

Do you know these acronyms?

NRP upgrades your living environment by adding amenities such as playgrounds, covered walkways and ramps, among others. It is fully funded by the Government.

EASE enhances the safety and comfort of seniors through slip-resistant treatment to floor tiles, installation of grab bars and ramps in their homes.

HIP enhances your flats through upgrades such as installation of doors and repair of cracks in ceiling.

Gingery Recipe Spices Up Festivity

Every bite of their ginger-marinated fried chicken warrants a careful chew, as husband-and-wife pair Mr Mohd Noh Rahmat, 62, and Madam Rohaya Rose, 56, took an entire year to come up with the recipe that has taken palates by storm.

“There was a lot of trial and error. We are glad that we finally arrived at something unique,” Mohd Noh reminisced.

Featured by KF Seetoh of Makansutra fame in 2016 and Meat and Greed (Channel 5) in January this year, the Mat Noh & Rose Authentic Ginger Fried Chicken Rice stall at Whampoa Food Centre is popular among residents and working adults. The couple uses basmati rice that has lower glycaemic index compared to the usual white rice.

“Ginger helps to get rid of excess wind in our stomach, and basmati rice is suitable even for diabetic patients’ consumption,” Madam Rohaya explained. More adventurous patrons can try fried chicken skin and other giblets such as the gizzard, liver, neck and chicken’s tail.

Every year, the couple celebrates Hari Raya Puasa with a three-hour buffet treat to thank all their customers. Mr Mohd Noh said: “I usually prepare four to five dishes for about 150 people. When we see them enjoying our food, we also feel happy!”

Authentic Taiwanese Delights In The City

Newly opened in July 2018, cosy classroom-themed cafe Eat 3 Bowls has been drawing in crowds of diners craving for authentic Taiwanese cuisine.

Nestled among a rich array of eateries at Block 462 Crawford Lane, the cafe is well-known for its three signature food bowls – Braised Pork Rice, Chicken Rice and Oyster Intestine Mee Sua.

Thanks to their brilliance in capturing the flavours of Taiwan, the cafe is often dubbed by their patrons as “one of the best and most authentic Taiwanese cuisine places in Singapore” on social media.

Run by two cousins, co-owner Mr Wayne Ng, 30, who is married to a Taiwanese, shared that it took them over a year to perfect their recipe. So dedicated were they in their craft that they made multiple trips to Taiwan to taste the local dishes there and to compare them with their own concoctions.

“Once we felt that we had created something good, we would fly back to Taiwan to taste the dish there to see the difference,” said Mr Ng, adding that the business would not have taken off without working together with his cousin Mr Andre Lim, also 30.

The hard work was worth it. Mr Ng said: "Just a few days ago, one customer left a note saying that our food tasted very good. It's things like this that makes me feel proud of our achievements."
