An armchair guide to judging barbershop contests
A quick overview of how barbershop contests are judged. NOT thedefinitive guide... just enough to take in your first contest knowledgably.
First ContestsThe first contest of the Barbershop Harmony Society, held in Tulsa,Okla., in June of 1939, was an extremely casual affair. There were noscore cards, no trained judges — in fact, no one's sure how manyquartets actually competed. We do know that the Bartlesville Barfliesof Bartlesville, Okla., beat the Capitol City Four of Springfield, Ill., aftera "sing-off," and took home $50 and the coveted title of "World Cham-pion Quartet."The second contest, held at the New York World's Fair in 1940, wasjudged by a panel of dignitaries that included Governor Al Smith, whomone competitor overheard whispering to a fellow judge,
"They all sound good to me — who should I vote for?"
Today’s Judging SystemThe Barbershop Harmony Society's judging system has sincebecome far more precise. Judges today undergo a rigorous,three-year training process leading to certification in one of threescoring categories: Singing, Presentation and Music.
SingingThe Singing judge evaluates the degree to which the performerachieves artistic singing in the barbershop style. This is accomplishedthrough precise, in-tune harmonizing, a high degree of vocal skill anda high level of unity and consistency within the ensemble. Masteringthese elements also creates a feeling of fullness, "ring" or expansion ofsound throughout the performance.
PresentationThe Presentation judge evaluates how effectively a performer bringsthe song to life — that is, the believability of the theme in its musical andvisual setting. He responds to both the vocal and visual aspects of thepresentation and evaluates everything about the performance thatcontributes to emotional impact upon the audience.
MusicThe Music judge evaluates the song and the arrangement, as per-formed. He adjudicates the musical elements in the performance —melody, harmony, range, tempo, rhythm and meter, construction andform, and embellishments — and the degree to which the musicalelements of the song and arrangement display the hallmarks of thebarbershop style.
