Do any of you feel extr emely prepared lately? The reason I ask is that we just finished Advent where we  prepared ourselves for the birth of the Christ Child. We were focusing on the idea of remembering the coming of Christ while look- ing forward to t he return of Christ. Now we find ourselves just around the cor- ner from Lent where we are going to prepare ourselves to share in Christ’s suf- fering so we can share i n Christ’s resurr ection. That is a lot of preparation! So why do we prepare? I know when I prepare it increases my f ocus, opens the door for me to concentrate on a few things rather than many, and increases the chance for me to get something out of the endeavor. I think the reason we as a church go through so many preparations in our Christian calendar is so that we can be reminded of God’s love. All of these seasons, all of these occasions, re- volve around one thing. And that is God’s love for us. Christ was born because God loves us. Christ died because God loves us. Christ rose from the grave because God loves us. That love is the strongest thing I have ever witnessed. It is never ending. It can survive all si tuations. It is extended to all that wi ll accept it. It is the st rongest thing in the universe! As we prepare to go through the season of Lent together, a season typically marked by the tradition of denying ourselves some aspect of life we treasure, I encourage us to remember why. The reason that we forgo that one thing in our life for those forty days of Lent is to give us more time to focus on God. By finding one thing that occupies a significant portion of our time and then using that time to focus on God opens the door for wonderful things to happen! I know this season sometimes seems somber as we talk about the idea of death, but there is a happier s ide. That side is the side that is the reflection of God’s love. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month and send our loved ones cards, flowers, and candy, remember the one that loved us first. Blessings, Pastor Daryl

Greetings Brothers and Sisters!

Do any of you feel extremely prepared lately? The reason I ask is that we justfinished Advent where we  prepared ourselves for the birth of the Christ Child. We were focusing on the idea of remembering the coming of Christ while look-ing forward to the return of Christ. Now we find ourselves just around the cor-ner from Lent where we are going to prepare ourselves to share in Christ’s suf-

fering so we can share in Christ’s resurrection. That is a lot of preparation!

So why do we prepare? I know when I prepare it increases my focus, opens thedoor for me to concentrate on a few things rather than many, and increases thechance for me to get something out of the endeavor. I think the reason we as achurch go through so many preparations in our Christian calendar is so that wecan be reminded of God’s love. All of these seasons, all of these occasions, re-volve around one thing. And that is God’s love for us.

Christ was born because God loves us. Christ died because God loves us.Christ rose from the grave because God loves us. That love is the strongest

thing I have ever witnessed. It is never ending. It can survive all situations. Itis extended to all that will accept it. It is the strongest thing in the universe!

As we prepare to go through the season of Lent together, a season typicallymarked by the tradition of denying ourselves some aspect of life we treasure, Iencourage us to remember why. Prayer serves as the backbone of the chur ch. It is what supports all ourefforts of ministry. In that spirit, you are invited to hold these per sons in your pr ayers and thoughts. Just as the Spirit needs healing, so does the body. The two, it seems, go together in God’s plan.

PARISH NURSE NEWSLINE

Joyce Baugher, R.N., Parish Nurse

Let’s talk about safety. Do you have fire alarms? Do you keep their batteries up to date? Do you know thatMarion County Fire Department has fire alarms for free for those of low income? You can also purchase themat Home Depot, Lowes, or most hardware stores. Do you have a fire extinguisher? If you do, do you knowhow to use it?? Now, let’s look at your surroundings. Do you have too much furniture? Do you have anythingblocking your exits? If you had to find your way through the house in complete darkness, could you do it with-out bumping into items? Remember that throw rugs can become a hazard as we get along in years. Take agood look around your house and inspect it for safety. Getting rid of extra furniture is always a good start.

Just a reminder that our church has an extensive supply of medical equipment for short term loan. We havewheelchairs, crutches, walkers, shower chairs, bedside potty chairs, etc. Only thing I ask is that you sign outwhat you borrow and sign them back in so I can keep inventory. The sign-out sheets are in the office. If youborrow at night or on the weekend, just drop by the church office, during normal business hours, to fill out the

paper, please.

Thank you to everyone who supported our, “Happy Birthday Party”. Those who were unable to come missed afun night. We are always open to suggestions, so if you have an idea, please share it with any F.I.A. member.

Back by popular demand, we will be having our “DESSERT AUCTION” the same Sunday as Scout Sunday inFebruary. This is our only source of income for the year. We use this money in our missions, buying dishesand silverware for our kitchen, church picnic, Relay for Life and anywhere we see a need. Please support ourdessert auction by buying goodies, and/or donating goodies for our sale.

Sometime in March, we are planning a, “show and tell” arts and crafts for our church members participation. So, if you have a craft or art piece you would like to show our church family, tell a little about it, or crafts youwould have available for sale, plan for our “arts” show. Most likely, we will plan this for a Sunday during ourFellowship Hour after worship. We have many talented people in our church family, so this is a chance toshow your talent.

MODELs (Mostly Older Debutantes Eating Lunch) will meet at Veranda Gallery and Tea Room, 416 SE Ft.King Street on February 18th at noon.

SALTY SERVICE WORKSHOPS

Workshops aim at increasing Salty Service

A series of five workshops, spread throughout the Florida Conference, will help congregational leaders learn

practical strategies for joining Jesus in mission to the least, the last and the lost. The Salty Service events are the fourth in a series of events focusing on the five discipling practices of effec-tive congregations known as “The Methodist Way.”

These one-day events, offered this March, will help participants explore how to do outreach ministry in aWesleyan way in their community, according to the Rev. Dr. Jeff Stiggins, executive director of the Office of Congregational Transformation.

“Everyone is welcome to attend,” said Stiggins, “but our main target audience is small to medium-sized con-gregations. Also, because reaching out is so important to the younger generation, we’re being very intentionalin inviting youth and young adults to these events.”

Paul Chilcote will be the keynote speaker for each of the five events. Chilcote is professor of Historical Theol-ogy and Wesleyan Studies at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio.Breakout groups will be offered at each event. Some of the topics for breakout sessions include helping churchleaders find what community needs exist; being in ministry with the poor; prison ministry; ending childhoodhunger; mission trips with a difference; disaster response; and earth care.

Dates and locations of the Salty Service events are:

Thursday, March 4 Grace United Methodist Church, Cape CoralFriday, March 5 Harris Chapel United Methodist Church, Oakland Park

Thursday, March 11 St. Paul United Methodist Church, LargoFriday, March 12 First United Methodist Church, DelandSaturday, March 13 Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church, Tallahassee

Each event wil l s tar t with registrat ion at 9 a.m., and end by 4 p.m.Cost to attend each event is $45 and includes snacks and lunch. Online registration is available through theFlorida Conference Web site www.flumc.org; click on the “Salty Service Events” button on the right side of the page. When people register, they will not be signing up for breakout group sessions, just the eventdate/location they wish to attend. About two weeks before each event, people will receive additional informa-tion about the event and will also have the opportunity to select their breakout group sessions.

The meeting on Friday, March 12th in Deland, is the closest for us. If you are interested in going, let the officeknow by Monday, March 8th and we can arrange a carpool.
