A few words from our 2017 Foundation President

We provided more than 1,400 grants totaling $16.9 million to nonprofit organizations, which represented the highest level of giving in the history of the Foundation.

In this report, you’ll read about how we’re making a difference in our communities. For example, students have a better understanding of how to plan to pay for college or vocational school, parents can now take steps to prepare for the financial stability of their special needs child, and small business owners are getting the training they need to expand their businesses.

These stories reinforce our strategic alignment to SunTrust Bank’s purpose of Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being. We’ve continued to increase our emphasis on giving and partnering with nonprofit organizations that advance financial education and counseling, career readiness/workforce development and small business/entrepreneurship. Along with our thought leadership and new partnerships, we’re proud of what we accomplished in 2017.

Here are a few highlights from 2017:

• Increased the Lighting the Way Awards recipients to 30 nonprofits with grants totaling $800,000.

• Awarded significant grants to Autism Speaks, Clearpoint, Heart of Florida United Way and Grameen America, to name a few, helping more people with their financial well-being.

• Convened 11 top thought leaders from across the nation for our National Financial Well-Being Summit to talk about the importance of financial education and financial counseling in building confidence.

• Provided financial relief for natural disasters, including Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

• Created a Teammate Philanthropy Advisory Council to increase teammate engagement, awareness and communication of our Foundation efforts.

In late 2017, I announced my intention to retire. I’m delighted that the Foundation Board of Directors elected Stan Little as the new president of the Foundation. Stan Little joined SunTrust Bank in 2015 as Senior Vice President, Marketing Strategy & Operations. I know he’ll expand upon our efforts and deepen strategic alliances with nonprofit partners to strengthen our communities.

We expect 2018 to be a phenomenal year for the Foundation, as we nurture existing partnerships, forge new ones and continue to help Americans move toward financial confidence.

My best regards,

David Fuller, 2017 President, SunTrust Foundation

I’m delighted that the Foundation Board of Directors elected Stan Little as the new president of the Foundation.

O U R W O R K I N A C T I O NWe support programs that promote financial education, financial counseling, career readiness/workforce development and small business/entrepreneurship. We believe these are the building blocks of financial confidence.

Financial Education Providing basic financial literacy for students and adults is a key step along the journey to financial confidence. We’re proud to support classroom instruction and adult curriculum covering topics such as budgeting and opening bank accounts.

Highlight The SunTrust Foundation awarded $1.7 million to Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay to help fund a new facility which provides education on basic economic principles, connecting what students learn in the classroom to real-world situations. “Junior Achievement Finance Park will be the most innovative and far-reaching program for youth financial education in Tampa Bay.”

Richard George, President, JA Tampa Bay

Career Readiness / Workforce Development Employment plays a crucial role in achieving financial confidence. That’s why we fund efforts to prepare students and adults for careers and improved job opportunities including vocational training, needs-based scholarships, and tutoring for at-risk students.

Highlight We awarded a grant of $380,000 to Heart of Florida United Way’s “Destination Graduation” program, which connects students at Seminole State College who are at risk of dropping out for non-academic reasons, to resources needed to stay in school. “The program and staff offered me hope and help at a time when I didn’t think there was any to be found.”

Financial Counseling

Small Business / Entrepreneurship From community development and financial management to providing initial capital, we support initiatives that assist in the training, planning and creation of small businesses because we believe they contribute to the livelihood of our communities.

Highlight In 2017, the Foundation granted Grameen America $250,000 to help low-income women entrepreneurs in Charlotte, North Carolina, build small businesses to improve or create better lives for their families. “Financial education is essential for women entrepreneurs on the path to economic empowerment. We are grateful to the SunTrust Foundation for their support. By promoting financial literacy and inclusion, we are enabling women entrepreneurs in Charlotte to reach their full potential.”

Andrea Jung, President and CEO, Grameen America

Our Purpose inspires us to support initiatives that help people deal with specific financial circumstances- such as student debt, affordable housing, repairing and restoring credit and financial aid and tax preparation.

Highlight The SunTrust Foundation awarded $700,000 to Clearpoint’s Hispanic Center for Financial Excellence Programs in Miami, Florida, and Norcross, Georgia, to help low-income families achieve financial stability through financial education, advice, and tools. “When I got to the Center…my income was reduced, and I didn’t know how I was going to maintain our household. Today I’m taking steps to rebalance my budget…while I focus on improving my finances.”

T H O U G H T L E A D E R S H I PIn 2017, we shaped the conversation around financial confidence.

Launched a Teammate Philanthropy Advisory Council

SunTrust teammates get involved in our work by spreading awareness about Foundation efforts.

The council met regularly throughout 2017 to discuss ways we could enhance teammate engagement and provided feedback to strengthen our financial well-being initiatives.

These teammates share their stories, as well as those they’ve helped, as a way to encourage teammate participation in our philanthropic efforts and motivate others to light the way to financial well-being.

Nearly two-thirds of today’s high school students lack financial capability, and the problem is even more acute for minority populations.

As adults, nearly three-fourths say they feel financially stressed, while many report living paycheck to paycheck.

That’s why in October 2017, the SunTrust Foundation hosted a National Financial Well-Being Summit at SunTrust Park, convening top thought leaders from nonprofits and higher education across the nation to discuss the role their organization plays in promoting financial well-being in their communities.

Financial confidence positively impacts people’s ability to plan for their future, contribute productively to society and even open doors to new opportunities.

As community leaders, we’re working together to address this need, and with it the social and economic implications for families, businesses and employers.

We also held regional summits throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, bringing community leaders together to discuss ways they can help individuals in their local communities gain financial confidence.

Expanded our “Lighting The Way” Awards to increase their impact

Now in its second year, the awards provided 30 nonprofits with grants totaling $800,000 in 2017 to further financial well-being.

SunTrust Bank local leadership teams nominated organizations for the positive impact they made in building financial confidence in their communities in one or more of the Foundation’s four strategic financial well-being areas.

Scholarships are available for full-time undergraduate study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.

Matching Gifts

The SunTrust Foundation Matching Gifts Program was created to encourage SunTrust Bank teammates to increase their financial support of higher education, culture, historic preservation and the arts.

Under the program, the SunTrust Foundation matches gifts to qualifying organizations made by teammates on a dollar-for-dollar basis. All full-time teammates of SunTrust Bank or its affiliates are eligible to apply for a matching gift.

SunTrust Bank teammates involved with the company’s affinity groups volunteered at community workshops. “We see a unique opportunity to help reconnect our police officers with our communities to foster camaraderie, discuss issues and offer important job training that leads to financial confidence.”

David Fuller, 2017 President, SunTrust Foundation

Through onUp Together Volunteerism, SunTrust Bank teammates focused on helping people take steps toward financial confidence through volunteer activities like teaching financial education through Junior Achievement, The Salvation Army, colleges, veterans groups and other local nonprofits. Highlight SunTrust teammates get up to eight hours of paid time off to volunteer. In 2017, they collectively contributed nearly 38,000 hours of service. During National Financial Literacy Month in April, teammates volunteered an incredible 4,000 hours.

Lending & Investing SunTrust Bank believes it has a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to promote and make financial confidence possible for others.

Highlight SunTrust Community Capital partially owns over 40,000 housing units and makes other tax credit investments in support of job creation and education. In 2017, investments built 2,740 apartment units (mostly affordable housing), created 3,058 jobs, and directly helped 1,800 people.
