    To address the problem of access to surgical care for underserved communities domestically and abroad.

    Bringing together students, residents, practitioners, and researchers to combat the global burden of surgical diseases through surgical training, research and advocacy.

  • OBJECTIVES

    Defining the Burden of surgical disease – particularly in Low Income Countries and underserved communities locally.

    Identifying where disparities in surgical care exist and quantifying their magnitude.

    Defining strategies for surgical care delivery that addresses:1. Access to essential and emergency surgery2. Narrowing inequalities in surgical care amongst populations

    Provide a forum for mentorship for students, residents and faculty.

  • PGSSD – Residency Tract

    PGY 1 – Intern Year

    No change in broad based core curriculum in General Surgery

    Residents interested will identify themselves and apply for the tract by January 1st. (residents scoring above the 50th percentile on absite are eligible)

    Residents accepted will be assigned mentor by February 1st.

    Introduction to the core issues regarding surgery in the developing world and surgical disparities1. Reading syllabus2. Monthly advisor meetings

    PGY 2 – Junior Resident

    Continued broad based core curriculum in General Surgery

    Field experience at International Site in the developing world – to be completed in vacation

    Continued mentorship with faculty to:1. Decide on site and partner for International work2. Plan scholarly project addressing surgical disparities to be

    followed longitudinally3. Complete course of study to establish language

    proficiency.
