SLN – CourseSpace Student Survey ~ Spring 2006
The following report contains information collected from the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) - CourseSpace Students Online Survey for Spring semester 2006.
As of June 14, 2006; 7760 questionnaires were electronically collected. The data included 2534 blank questionnaires. These blank questionnaires were deleted from the initial sample if the entire questionnaire was blank and contained no completed items. Survey returns that were partially completed where included in the final sample of ##. The remaining ##responses were analyzed in the report.
The student survey was created and collected online using the SurveySolutions Express Software by Perseus Development Corporation.1 Students enrolled in online courses via SLN or CourseSpace during the Fall Academic Semester were asked to complete and submit an online survey form for each course they were taking.
The analysis of data was conducted using SPSS software and Microsoft Excel.

Table II.3 and Figure 3 provide the combined frequencies and percentages for question 2.
Item 2:
Respondents were asked to provide their academic disciplines by selecting from a dropdown list containing 62 possible options.
In addition to the discipline options, respondents were also given the opportunity of selecting:
• I choose not to answer this question, or
• Other.
Respondents selecting the category ‘other’ were immediately routed to the statement…
“If you answered “other,” please specify the course discipline area.” This request was followed by a text box in which respondents were able to type a written response.
In all, 415 students of 4879 valid responses selected the “other” category. These written replies were analyzed and combined with responses submitted from the dropdown list choices. The combined data was coded into the following three categories:
• Arts and humanities
• Physical / life sciences & engineering
• Social sciences

The next section of the survey was not accessible to all respondents. These items (13-17) were written specifically for SLN students, to gain additional insight into students’ motivations for taking online classes. The survey was designed to use the respondents’ answers to Item 12 (i.e., students’ online format) as a logic trigger that determined whether respondents needed to complete items 13 thru 17.
Only respondents who indicated that they were CourseSpace students were routed directly to item 18, thus bypassing items 13-17. While those who had indicated they were enrolled in an SLN course, were ‘not sure’ of their online format, or ‘chose not to answer’ the question were routed to item 13.

Table VI.1a Overall Course Satisfaction
The remaining sections of the survey sought to gain a sense of students’ overall perceptions of their courses (Items 18-23), their instructors (Items 24-27), and the online learning environment (Items 28-30). Items 18 thru 27 consisted of statements that students were asked to indicate their level of agreement using a 5 point Likert-type scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree.
Items 28-30 also used a 5 point Likert-type scale, yet differed from the previous items in that range of agreement changed to range of comparisons, i.e., from ‘much less than in other courses’ to ‘much more than in other courses.’ In all items students were also able to select a sixth option, “I choose not to answer this question.”
