8 THE GUIDE 2SB45
West 7th St./West SideVisitors to Fort Worth who haven’t been back in a year or so might not even recognize the city’s West 7th Street corridor. Where once stood only low-slung warehouses are now vibrant bars/nightclubs, restaurants, and shops, everything only recently erected. Park wherever you can find a spot and make the rounds on foot. Everything from hole-in-the-wall pubs to high fashion is within walking distance. One of the West 7th corridor’s most celebrated establishments is Brownstone (840 Currie St., 817-332-1555), owned and operated by celebrity chef Casey Thompson, a recent finalist on Top Chef, the popular Bravo TV series. Specializing in cuisine that can best be described as “fancy home-cookin’,” Brownstone also features several specialty cocktails. For a less fancy but equally top-notch gustatory experience, there’s Fred’s Texas Café (915 Currie St., 817-332-0083), a burger-and-a-beer icehouse that’s been around for more than 30 years and was featured on the Food Network’s popular TV series Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. In addition to Fred’s award-winning Diablo Burger, the place also serves up wild game that chef and owner Terry “The Outlaw Chef” Chandler catches himself. The nightlife options in the West 7th corridor are multitudinous and diverse. The Pour House (2725 W. 7th St., 817-335-2575) is the area’s only sports bar, offering hearty snacks and entrées, various drink specials, live music, and dozens of TVs, and easily one of the hippest hangouts in town, Lola’s Saloon (2736 W. 6th St., 817-877-0666), regularly hosts hipster-approved local and touring bands, most of the indie-rock variety. “West 7th gives you more than XLV ways to have fun in Fort Worth,” said Randa McMinn, of Cypress Equities, West 7th’s developer. “Make us your beginning to end zone for memorable shopping and dining experiences. From upscale fashions and down-home favorites to custom jewelry and international cuisine, you’re guaranteed a good time.” And keep in mind that the West 7th corridor is less than a mile from Fort Worth’s internationally renowned Cultural District, home to three world-class museums: the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (3501 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-738-1933), the Kimbell Art Museum (3333 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-654-1034), and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (3200 Darnell St., 817-738-9215), housing the second-largest collection of post-WWII art in the country. And if you follow West 7th
Street to Camp Bowie Boulevard, you’ll end up on Fort Worth’s tony West Side, home to several art galleries, boutiques, nightclubs, and restaurants, including Tokyo Café (5121 Pershing Ave., 817-737-8568), Uncle Julio’s (5301 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-377-2777), and Ray’s Prime Steak House & Seafood (3206 Winthrop Ave., 817-732-1614). ArlingtonIn addition to being the home of Cowboys Stadium, Arlington also boasts Rangers Ballpark, Six Flags Over Texas, and Hurricane Harbor. Yes, Arlington is supremely family friendly. It’s also got malls –– several of them. The Parks at Arlington Mall (3811 S. Cooper St., 817-467-0200) has a Macy’s, Barnes & Noble, AMC movie theater, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gap, Banana Republic, and pretty much every other retailer you would expect to find at a major mall. Lincoln Square (436 Lincoln Sq., 817-461-7953) has a Gap, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Pier 1 Imports, among others, but is a pretty solid drinking and dining destination – Swamp Daddy’s (740 Lincoln Sq., 817-469-4747), Olenjack’s Grille (770 Road to Six Flags East, 817-226-2600), Simply Fondue (770 E. Road to Six Flags Dr., 817-861-1144), Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub & Grill (254 Lincoln Sq., 817-226-2300), and Louie Louie’s Dueling Piano Bar (298 Lincoln Sq., 817-274-7464) are just some of your carousing options in Lincoln Square. The Arlington Highlands Lifestyle Center (1-20 Highway at Matlock Road and Center Street) is like Lincoln Square but a little bigger and relatively newer, featuring a Bed Bath & Beyond, Borders, Coldwater Creek, James Avery, and World Market and also several destination hot spots, including BlackFinn American Saloon (4001 Bagpiper Way, 817-468-3332), Bone Daddy’s House of Smoke (loaded with scantily clad young, female servers, 415 E. I-20 Hwy., 817-704-7744), Improv Comedy Club (309 Curtis Mathes Way, 817-635-5555), P.F. Chang’s China Bistro (215 E. I-20 Hwy., 817-375-8690), and Piranha Killer Sushi (309 Curtis Mathes Way, 817-465-6455). And the Shoppes at Brownstone Village (2408 W. Abram St., 817-275-8990) is full of funky, quirky little boutiques. Though as mainstream as Arlington is, the city is also pretty ethnically diverse, reflected in its myriad ethnic retailers and eateries, including Iraqi Restaurant (520 W. Park Row Dr., 817-262-1175), Beirut Rock (1201 S. Cooper St., 817-860-5499), and Potager (315 S. Mesquite St., lunch only, 817-861-2292). Arlington also is a small-college town. Located in Northwest Arlington is the University of Texas at Arlington, a commuter school but a school nonetheless, which gives the city a little underground edge –– UTA students keep afloat such hip watering holes as Caves Lounge (900 W. Division St., 817-460-5510), J.R. Bentley’s (406 W.
Abram St., 817-261-7351), and Ozzie Rabbit Lodge (6463 E. Lancaster Ave., East Fort Worth, 817-446-9010), and there’s always a party at Feed Your Head (3415 S. Cooper St., 817-468-2029), one of the area’s best shops, featuring great clothes, a local-music sec-tion, and more.Scan this QR code with your smart-phone for a detailed map of the area. 26 THE GUIDE 2SB45
Downtown/Sundance SquareDowntown Fort Worth is the poster child for urban redevelopment. From a dense city cen-ter full of abandoned buildings and storefronts in the 1980s has sprouted one of the most vibrant downtowns in the country. In addition to high-dollar condo and apartment living, the shopping and entertainment options downtown are seemingly unlimited, and every-thing is within walking distance (and along wide, tree-lined sidewalks). One popular part of Downtown is Sundance Square, an area of assorted bars/restaurants, theaters, and retailers that’s also home to Bass Performance Hall, one of the grandest concerts halls in the world. Sundance Square also has become the center of the sports broadcasting universe –– ESPN has set up shop at the Chisholm Trail Parking Lot (400 Main St.) and is broadcasting from there live. Thirsty? The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium (111 E. 4th St., 817-336-7470) offers literally dozens of varieties of beers that you simply can’t get anywhere else. (Sadly, though, for our Pittsburgh visitors, there’s no Iron City.) And 8.0 Restaurant & Bar (111 E. 3rd St., 817-336-0880), home to one of the most awesome patios in North Texas, has just trotted out a vintage cocktail menu. Hungry? A few recom-mendations include the homey but progressive Cowtown Diner (305 Main St., 817-332-9555), the sophisticated Grace (777 Main St., 817-877-3388), and the cowboy-cuisine-loving Reata (310 Houston St., 817-336-1009). Feel like partying? Lone Star (425 Commerce St., 817-335-5400) is a massive assemblage of six different clubs all under one roof, and Scat Jazz Lounge (111 W. 4th St., 817-870-9100) has a vintage-Vegas vibe. Just south of Sundance Square is SoDo (or “South Downtown”), where the pretty people hang out. Hot spots include Bar 9 (900 Houston St., 817-348-9991), featuring bottle service and VIP areas, and Embargo (210 E. 8th St., 817-870-9750), a Cuban-themed nightclub that also serves up some superior Cuban-themed food –– don’t pass on the Tortas Dominicanas, a hearty sandwich of succulent asada and ham, gooey cheese, grilled onions, and chipotle sauce on a warm French baguette. “As the AFC champions host city, Fort Worth is ready to welcome fans for Super Bowl XLV,” said Kelly Campbell, vice president of marketing communications for the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Without a doubt, downtown Fort Worth and its entertainment district, Sundance
Square, will be one of the best places to catch all the action. You can see your favorite ESPN shows broadcast live, attend exciting events such as Taste of the NFL, and participate in activities like the first-ever Super Sunday Morning Hope Walk. We want visitors and locals alike to enjoy North Texas’ first Super Bowl.” For more information, visit www.fortworth.com.

Near South Side/TCUIf you’re looking for a chain bar or restaurant, go someplace other than the Near South Side, the heart of Independent Fort Worth. The neighborhood near the Hospital District has been experiencing a revival and is now pedestrian- and bike-friendly, and the array of ma-and-pa establishments is dizzying. “An amazing renaissance is underway on the Near South Side, with dozens of historic restoration and new construction projects transforming the district and attracting new residents and businesses,” said Mike Brennan, of Fort Worth South Inc., a nonprofit organization devoted to the area. “The Near South Side’s history dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when it was developed as the city’s first streetcar suburb. Today the neighborhood is an eclectic and diverse mixed-use community and the second largest employment center in Tarrant County, with more than 30,000 jobs.” North Texas’ only all-vegan restaurant, Spiral Diner, is located smack dab in the middle of all the action, at 1314 W. Magnolia Ave., and regularly serves up food tasty enough to make even the most die-hard carnivore strongly consider veganism. Nearby is the Chat Room Pub (1263 W. Magnolia Ave., 817-922-8319), where Fort Worth’s underground artists and musicians regu-larly congregate to bar-stool philosophize and/or shoot pool. Now, we aren’t saying the Near South Side is bereft of swankified joints. Not at all. One of the sexiest spots in North Texas is The Usual (1408 W. Magnolia Ave., 817-810-0114), a Modernist but comfortable and friendly lounge that specializes in Prohibition-Era cocktails, including Aviations, Cosmopolitans, and Moscow Mules. Right down the street is Ellerbe Fine Foods (1501 W. Magnolia Ave., 817-926-3663), an establishment that was recently named one of the top 10 best new restaurants in the country by Bon Appétit magazine. Slightly north of Magnolia is Fort Worth’s only brewery, Rahr & Sons Brewing Company (701 Galveston Ave., 817-810-9266), offering tastings on Wednesdays and Saturdays. “Whether you’re looking for comfort food, sophisticated cuisine, a locally brewed Rahr beer from a hole-in-the-wall pub, or a Prohibition-Era cocktail in a sleek non-smoking lounge, the Near South Side has what you’re looking for Super Bowl week,” Brennan said. Only a short drive west is the TCU area, home of the 2011 Rose Bowl champions, the TCU Horned Frogs. Bars and restaurants abound near the inter-
section of West Berry Street and South University Drive. Dutch’s Burgers & Beer (3009 S. University Dr., 817-927-5522), Hammerhead Sushi (2858 W. Berry St., 817-927-0417), and The Moon (2911 W. Berry St., 817-926-9600) are just some of your TCU-area options.

Grapevine/H.E.B.Known as the Christmas Capital of Texas and located near DFW International Airport, Grapevine is a mix of old-world charm and urban sophistication. The main drag of Main Street through Historic Grapevine is lined with antique shops, vari-ous boutiques, and several destination restaurants, all independently owned. To satisfy a hankering for some fresh seafood, you have several options, including Big Fish (414 S. Main St., 817-481-2010), offering some of the fattest, most suc-culent raw oysters in North Texas, and Dino’s Steak & Claw House (324 Main St., 817-488-3100), a much fancier establishment than the homey Big Fish but just as friendly. For Italian food, it doesn’t get any better than the fare at Café Italia (505 W. Northwest Hwy., 817-251-0100). For a mouth-watering burger, go no far-ther than Flip’s Patio Grill (415 State Highway 114 West, 817-251-9800). Grapevine is also home to the kid-friendly Great Wolf Lodge (100 Great Wolf Dr., 866-760-9653) and the enormous Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center (1501 Gaylord Trail, 817-778-2000), a sprawling campus that includes a hotel, spa, several bars/restaurants, and the Glass Cactus Nightclub. And Grapevine isn’t called “Grapevine” for nothing. The city is where you’ll find some of the fin-est wineries in Texas, most of them offering regular tastings and food. Grapevine also counts among its attractions several bed and breakfasts and the Grapevine Vintage Railroad (705 S. Main St., 817-410-3123). “Super Bowl XLV will be the first in North Texas, and Grapevine is thrilled to be a part of this momentous occa-sion,” said Lisa Samuel, media relations manager for Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We look forward to hosting fans in our hotels, restaurants, win-eries, and shops.” Closer to the airport, in the Hurst-Bedford-Euless area, your
shopping, entertainment, and dining options are equally myriad, and not all of them are chains. Añejo House of Tequila (9159 Blvd. 29, North Richland Hills, 817-485-9900) has been receiving rave reviews, and BoomerJack’s Grill & Bar (2300 W. Airport Fwy., 817-267-0267) isn’t your average sports bar –– its food is exceptional.

Stockyards/North SideThe old-timey Stockyards area in Fort Worth’s North Side is way more than a tourist trap, though there’s no better neighborhood in Tarrant County for that special “Cowtown” flavor –– there are daily cattle drives, there’s always a rodeo at the Cowtown Coliseum (121 E. Exchange Ave., 817-625-1025), and some of the best local and touring C&W artists perform at the legendary Billy Bob’s Texas (2520 Rodeo Plaza, 817-624-7117), the world’s largest honkytonk. But the Stockyards has managed to stay relevant to the locals by offering a varied mix of entertainment, shopping, and dining options. One can’t-miss restaurant is Lonesome Dove Western Bistro (2406 N. Main St., 817-740-8810), owned and operated by celebrity chef Tim Love, who did Fort Worth proud a couple of years ago by winning a battle on Iron Chef America, the popular Food Network TV series. For a less fancy though no less satisfy-ing culinary experience, there’s Love’s burger joint right around the corner, Love Shack (110 E. Exchange Ave., 817-740-8812). (There’s a second Love Shack, this one in Fort Worth’s So7 area.) Only at Love Shack does your burger come with a fried quail egg on top. Conveniently, the Love Shack is connected to one of the oldest, most esteemed countrified joints in North Texas, the White Elephant Saloon (106 E. Exchange Ave., 817-624-8273), whose stage is often graced by the most adventur-ous, progressive local and national Texas Music and Red Dirt artists. “The Fort Worth Stockyards is what football fans expect to see when they come to Texas: real cow-boys/cowgirls, a twice-daily cattle drive, country music, and rodeos,” said Pam Minick, marketing director of Billy Bob’s. “I hope they all come back soon!” And a little south along the main drag of Main Street on the North Side you’ll find some of the best traditional Mexican restaurants in North Texas, serving up fresh, one-of-a-
kind Mex-Mex and Tex-Mex delicacies. For a killer burrito, visit Chalio Birrieria Mexican Restaurant (2020 N. Main St., 817-740-0465). For tamales, try Amy’s Restaurant (1537 N. Main St., 817-624-6434). For pure people watch-ing, there’s Joe T. Garcia’s (2201 N. Commerce St., 817-626-4356), whose spacious patio is often graced by local and national celebrities.
