Hair Color StageThe color experts were out in full force on the Hair Color Stage. Chrystofer Benson and Lenny Strand of Matrix took the audience through the hottest concept for hair right now—strobing. Deb Gavin of Keratin Complex gave valuable insight for reading a canvas to avoid common color challenges. And Candy Shaw showcased tips, tools and techniques for turning out beautiful balayage every time.

EducationThe massive number of classes offered ran the gamut, covering everything for hair, nails, makeup, bar-bering and business. George Alderete of Keune shared how to create salon usable, client wearable dimensional color. Kristi Faulkner of Wahl showed the core techniques of successful bar-bering and precision cutting. And our very own Gordon Miller, Publisher/VP, Integrated Media of American Salon,

moderated two packed classes on social media’s game-changing impact on the pro beauty industry. He was joined by Jenny Strebe, Phil Ring and Ricardo Santiago for the first panel on achieving Instagram success, and by Matt Beck and Sam Villa for a second panel on creating engaging content that produces results.

EventsSpecial evening events like the Paul Mitchell White Party, Breakfast of Champions, ICEBAR Masquerade Party 2 and Global Beauty Masters gave attendees a chance to mingle, meet and celebrate another show year together.

CURL POWERuidad is the undisputed queen of curls. She opened the first salon to specialize in curly hair in 1984 in New York City. “When you

earn a curly client’s trust, they become a lifetime client—which is a rare thing in our industry,” says Ouidad, who has been so committed to the natural curl movement that she created her own line of products specifically for curly-haired clients and started a mail-order business in 1987. In 2008 she opened a flagship salon in Santa Monica, CA, and currently offers certification classes there as well at the flagship salon in New York City. Curl Labs are offered through distributors like True Star in Florida, Rising Star in New Jersey, Future Vision in New York, Western Star for California and Mountain Star for Colorado. Ouidad Master Artistic Educators also facilitate Art of Curl classes that take curl beyond the foundational Rake and Shake and into four additional styling options for four specific curl types. MEN’S GROOMING & BARBERING

t’s been more than 20 years since American Crew altered the landscape when it come’s to men’s grooming, raising the bar for everyone. “Education has always been important to us, but now it’s more important than ever to

be a skilled professional,” says Paul Wilson, American Crew Creative Director. “Men know what a good haircut’s all about so you have to know the basic skills and can’t just wing it anymore. Guys have a whole new understanding and appreciation for what a quality haircut is. If you can’t deliver the looks that are trending now, you won’t keep your clients.”

No one knows that better than Wahl, especially now that traditional barbering has made a comeback. Case in point: Think Like a Barber, the class that can help you acquire an understanding for the dynamics of precision cutting. ”It's a thought process, a rather intimidating one I confess,” says Wahl Professional Director of Education Laura VanderMoere, who allows that having clipper and shear dexterity is a real plus. “Anything that can be done with shears can be done with clippers.” One of Wahl’s most popular classes is The Illusion, which teaches the art of placement fading, which has gone beyond a trend and has become a must-have skill in your arsenal of techniques. “These classes are selling out across the country,” says VanderMoere, who believes that our mind is our most powerful tool. “The more you know, the more options you have, the more clients you can service and the more competitive you will be.” To access a complete list of classes offered, visit wahlpro.com.
