Finding

Objective

To determine “G”, as accurately as possible

Hypothesis

Our hypothesis:

Gravity is a form of downward acceleration that

is caused by the mass of the earth acting on

objects and is calculable using various

methods.

TL;DR:

Gravity is acceleration and can be calculated

Procedure and Process:

Let’s be creative

Error 404:“G” Not Found

g= -9.8m/s/s

Procedure and Process:

Let’s be creativeExperiment A: Using the Pasco Sensors with Sparkvue

Experiment B: Dropping an object from a height and recording the process with a high frame rate camera

Experiment C: Releasing a physics car on a slope attached to ticker tape.

Experiment A:

Pasco Sensors with Sparkvue

Experiment B:

High Frame Rate Camera

Because engineers love electrical tape.

Experiment C:

Ticker Tape Timer

Results and Observations

Experiment A:

Pasco Sensors with Sparkvue

g = -9.8m/s/s

Experiment B:

High Frame Rate Camera

g = -10m/s/s

Experiment C:

Ticker Tape Timer

g = -4 m/s/s

Assumptions and

Limitations

General ErrorsLimitation: Used a rectangular wooden block for

measurements.

● May have caused more air resistance due to larger surface area.

Improvement:

● Use a denser, brightly coloured cube for easier identification.

● However, this may be harder for the Pasco Sensors to track due to a decreased surface area.

Human Error: Held the sensor against the wall.● We may have accidentally shifted it, altering what the

sensor would pick up.

Improvement: ● Use tape to lock the sensor in position after making

sure it is level.

Experiment A

Human error: We were not certain as to when the drop actually started.

● It was difficult to judge in which frame in the video was the block actually released.

● Our perception may have affected the results.

Improvement: ● Use better lighting ● Mark a definitive line to determine the beginning of the

drop.

Experiment B

Limitations:● Friction between physics car and slope.● Resistance from the pull of the ticker tape.These forces slow down the movement of the block,

skewing the results.

Improvement: ● There are no effective ways of eliminating the friction

between the board and the physics car.
