2

Recommended Departmental Standard Operating Procedure

Fuel 1. Use Fresh Fuel.Be sure the fuel you use is fresh. As gasoline ages it loses volatility.

2. Mix and store 2-cycle fuel in small quantities only.A. Only use fuel with an octane rating of 87 or above at a mix ratio of 40:1.

3. Replace all stored fuel monthly (at minimum). This includes the fuel in the equipment as well as the fuel in storage containers.

4. Be sure all containers are closed tightly to reduce condensation.

5. Agitate the fuel before filling the fuel tank and starting the saw.

6. If possible, avoid the use of oxygenated fuels, gasoline stabilizers or fuel line anti-freeze. These usually contain alcohol.

7. Inspect equipment regularly, paying particular attention to the fuel system.

8. Consider using non-oxygenated racing fuels(These are usually high octane, non-oxygenated lead based) for maximum performance.

Bar & Chain Oil

Bar and chain oil performs the essential role ofreducing bar and chain wear. Always use"Branded" chain saw bar and chain oil. Alwaysrefill the bar and chain oil when refueling.Leave oil adjust screw open to maximum. Oil will protect expensive chain and bar.

CAUTION!Some gasolines contain alcohol as an oxygenateOxygenated fuels may cause increased engine operating temperatures! Under certain conditions, alcohol-based fuels may also reduce the lubricating qualities of some mixing oils! Never use any fuel containing more than 10% alcohol by volume! When an oxygenated fuel must be used, an oxygenate such as MTBE should be preferred over an alcohol-based fuel!

CAUTION!Whenever possible, use Shindawa Premium 2-Cycle mixing oil or equivalent quality oil mixed at a 40:1 ratio. Be aware that some generic oils and some outboard mixing oils may not be intended for use in high-performance, air cooled 2-cycle engines and should never be used in your Shindawa saw!

Recommended Periodic Standard Operating Procedures

1. We recommend starting the saw no more than once a week when not in use.

2. During the weekly starting the saw must be run long enough to reach full operating temperature (generally at least 10 minutes). Be sure to vary the RPM's throughout this 10-minute period so the saw does not "load up" and foul the spark plug or clog the spark arrestor screen.

During this procedure bar and chain oil will bepumped, which will fill all available spaces inthe bar and chain. Even with the excess bar andchain oil wiped down after the procedure, oilwill pool under the saw, in the compartment. This is not unusual. Your saw is not leaking oil.

Since no material was cut, there was nosawdust created to absorb the excess bar andchain oil, thus gravity causes it to pool underthe saw.

11

Cleaning The Guide Bar

Remove the guide bar and wipe debris fromit. Clean out the chain groove using a barcleaning tool or a putty knife. (Fig 17)

If there is excess tar or debris buildup on the bar, clean it with solvent.

It is also important to thoroughly cleanthe oil holes on both sides of the guide bar.(Fig 18)

After cleaning the bar, lubricate the bearingsin the sprocket nose with a grease gun tool.(Fig 19)

NOTE:Flip Guide Bar When Reinstalling

When you reinstall the guide bar, flip the barover so the edge that was on the bottom is now on the top. This produces even wear to the guide bar rails.

Starting and Stopping Procedures

CAUTION!Before starting the saw, clear a safe work area. When the engine starts, the chain will rotate, so be prepared!

Starting

1. When engine is cool:Turn switch "On" - (Fig 1A)Pull choke lever all the way out - (Fig 1B)Depress lock lever (Fig 2A) then push starting throttle lock (Fig 2B) into starting lever.

2. When engine is warm:Turn switch "On"Depress lock lever (Fig 2A), then push starting throttle lock (Fig 2B) into throttle lever.

NOTE:Throttle lever cannot be pulled without depressing locklever in upper handle. When throttle is released, idlespeed is resumed and chain rotation stops.

3. Pull recoil starter rope (Fig 3A)while holdingthe chain saw firmly and placing your right foot into rear handle as shown in (Fig 3B) Pull cord slowly until engaged, then rapidly after you feel the increased resistance.

CAUTION!Don't pull rope to its full length and do not let your handslip off the rope when it is under tension. Starting canbe easily accomplished by pulling vigorously from the engaged position as shown.

4. When the engine fires or "coughs" - presschoke in and pull recoil starter handle again.Use caution as chain will rotate during engine starting. Once started, the engine will idle with throttle lock off. If saw fails to start after a few pulls, follow above procedures from the beginning. If saw till will not start, flooding mayhave occurred so check as follows:

Check spark by removing spark plug andshorting against cylinder while pulling recoilstarter rope. Make sure switch is "On".

Inspect to see if spark plug is fouled when it isremoved. If fouled: expel fuel by handcranking engine several times without sparkplug. Wipe off excess fuel from plug andreplace before starting engine,

NOTE:1. Make sure switch is "On" before starting2. Return choke to the original "In" position when saw first fires after starting with full choke. (Otherwise flooding will result and engine won't start)3. Upon starting, allow engine to idle for one to two minutes for warm-up.

Stopping

Turn switch to "Off" after idling at low speed for one to two minutes. Return switchto “on” position for next start.

The Super Vac V2 Depth Gauge has beendesigned, engineered and carefully tested toprovide increased safety and efficiency whenusing the saw in firefighting and rescueoperations.

In the fully extended position, the DepthGauge completely covers the guide bar andcutting chain, protecting the operator fromcontacting the chain. Even when retractedand set for specific depths of cut, the DepthGauge covers all but the specified chainexposed for cutting.

The Depth Gauge allows you to set a specificdepth of cut to prevent cutting any deeperthan is necessary. This prevents possibleweakening of the roof structure and preventscutting electrical wiring and pipes. It alsoresults in increased operator confidenceresulting in faster cuts with less worry.

The following instructions are intended tohelp you install and safely use the DepthGauge.

Removal / Installation of Depth Gauge

To remove Depth Gauge, loosen the Adjusting Knob and remove the Outer Section.

Operation of The Depth Gauge

To adjust the Depth Gauge, if the saw isrunning, first set the saw's chain brake.Loosen the adjusting knob and slide theouter section to the desired setting. Retighten the adjustment knob and releasethe chain brake.

NOTE:In the fully extended position, the Depth Gauge covers the cutting chain and allows you to start thesaw on the ground and safely carry it up to the roof or to your cutting position while it is running. Thiseliminates the need to restart the saw when you arein position and assures a fully operational saw.

Cutting Deeper Than The Depth Gauge Setting

You can increase the depth of your cutwithout changing the setting on the DepthGauge by increasing the angle of the saw inrelation to the roof's surface. While cutting at the standard 45º angle (Fig 13) the saw will cut to the depthindicated on the depth of cut scale. But byraising the angle of the saw to 90º (Fig 14)you can cut almost 1/2 inch deeper for every one inch indicated on the depth of scale.

Slide guide bar back to loosen chain. (Fig 7)Loosen the chain tensioning screw to the“loosest” position. Remove guide bar and chain from sprocket.

To Reinstall Chisel Chain and Guide Bar

Slide guide bar onto the two bar mount studs.(Fig 7) It may be necessary to adjust the chaintensioning screw to the "loosest" position toinstall the chain. (Fig. 8) To install the chain, align the chain so that the cutters are pointingtoward the tip of the guide bar as they lay on topof the bar. Slip the chain onto the clutch sprocketrim. (Fig 7) Then, slip the chain into the groove of the guide bar, checking again to make sure the top cutters are pointing toward the tip of theguide bar. Pull the chain around the bar to make sure the chain drive links are properlyseated in the drive sprocket. Mount clutch cover onto the two bar mount studs.

Using the Maintenance Tool, turn the tensioning adjustment screw (Fig 8) to tighten the chisel chain to tension.

Adjusting The Chisel Chain Tension

Gloves are recommended during chaintensioning. While holding up the guide bar tip(Fig 9) tighten the two clutch cover nuts. Upward pressure on the bar tip removes anyslack between the bar mounting slot and the two mounting studs. Tighten chain tensioningadjustment screw by turning it clockwise.Proper chain tensioning is a critical factor to increasing chain and guide bar life. As a general rule proper chain tension has the chain as tight as possible without restricting chain movement

(Fig 7) Bar Mount StudsClutch Sprocket Rim

Tensioning Adjustment Screw(Fig 8)

(Fig 9)

7

At proper tension the chain should move alongthe bar freely. You should feel only theresistance of the sprocket and clutch drumturning. If the chain "catches" or requiresexcessive force to move, it is too tight. Atproper tension the chain is in full contact withthe bar along the bottom rails. (Fig 9) There is no "sag" as shown in (Fig10).

Proper Chain Tension Check

At the midpoint along the bottom rails, whenpulling down on the chain, you should be ableto pull the chain away from the rails, so that the drive link is just clearing the rail (Fig 11)and snaps back into place when you release it.

Running-In The Chisel Chain

Running-in the chain stretches and fullylubricates the chain for optimum chain lifeand performance.

Start the saw and run it at three-quarter speedfor approximately 10 minutes, or until the barand chain begin to smoke. Now turn off thesaw. The chain has reached its operatingtemperature.

You should notice the chain now "sags" from the bar. (Fig 12) Before re-tensioning, allow thechain to cool down until it is cool enough totouch. Once it is cool enough to handle, readjust the chain to the proper tension.See page 6 for chain tension adjustment. After each use your Super Vac V2 Power ProSaw should be cleaned and inspected.

NOTE:Failure to clean the saw after each use can lead to a loss of performance, engine failure and premature wear.
