BBBNEZEB BROWN died in Roscoe, Wmnebago County, 111, Feb 13, 1872, aged 83 years and 6 months He was a native of Brimfield, Mass. He studied theology, and was first settled as pastor over the Congregational Church in the North Parish of "Wilbraham, Mass, March 3, 1819. He resigned this charge in July, 1827, and was installed three months later over the Congre- gational Church in Prescott, Mass, where he continued until March, 1835 He left this church to accept a call to the Second Church in Hadley (Upper Falls), Mass In 1838 he went from this position to Illinois, under a commission from the .American Home Missionary Society, and settled first in Byron, Ogle County In November, 1843, he aided in forming the Congregational Church m Roscoe, and two months later assumed its pastoral charge He retained his residence in Roscoe till his death, preaching in many other places, and passing his last years in retirement. He was a tutor m this College from 1817 to 1819, and during the greater partof his life supported himself by teaching in New York City After an old age ofextreme poverty, ho died, very suddenly, at his boarding house in New York,Jan 14, 1871 He was unmarried

Dr Matthew Pemne, of Now York City, was licensed to preach by the Litchfield(Conn ) North Association, Sept iO, 1818 On the 2d of June, 1819, he was set-tled over the Congregational Church in the village of North Cornwall, town ofCornwall, Conn He was obliged to resign on account of mental derangement in.April, 1838, and in the spring of 1840 removed to Mount Vornon, 0 , where heengaged in teaching and also m business

He married Orpha Jerome, adopted daughter of Stephen Dodge, of New YorkCity, who died near the close of the year 1874 They had three sons

A NSON HUBBARD, son of David and Jemima (Chamberlain) Hubbard, was born inGlastonbury, Conn , May 24, 1791, and died in Everett, Mass, March 6, 1876, mhis 85th year

He studied theology with Rev Nathan Perkins, D D , of West Hartford, Conn ,and was licensed to preach by the Hartford North Association, Feb 4, 1819.After preaching for a ^ew months in Eastford Conn , he was settled in 1820 overthe Congregational Church in Luneuborg, Yt , but was obliged to resign his chargesome three years later, on account of poor health He was installed Jan 15,1828,over the Congregational Church m Monson, Me , and there continued until his dis-mission, Aug 19, 1834 He requested this dismission in order to ]om a colony,organized in Maine, for a settlement in Illinois, and he labored for a few years mPay son, Round Prairie, and Plymouth, in that State, until disabled by illness l iethen returned to Maine, and for eight years from November, 1838, supplied thechurch in Ymlover I le then retired to Chelsea, Mass, and there and m the placeof his death spent his closing years

He was married in 1829 to Miss Charlotte Adams, of Rumford, Me, who diedin Chelsea m 1855 In September, 1859, he married Miss Caroline Augusta Hub-bard, of Glastonbury, Conn, who survives him By his first marriage he had twosons, the elder of whom died of consumption in 1854, when "just about to enterCollege The younger son enlisted in the Union army in the late civil war, andwas killed at the battle of Cold Harbor

ROGER WOLCOTT GRISWOLD was born in Lyme, Conn., Maich 15, 1191, thefourth son of Gov Boger Gnswold (Y. C 1780), and grandson of Gov MatthewGnswold His mother was Fanny, daughter of Col Zabdiel Rogers, of Norwich,Conn.

Upon graduation he removed to Norwalk, Ohio, where he studied law with hisbrother-m-law Ebenezer Lane (Harvard College 1811), afterwards Chief Justice ofthe Supreme Court of that State In 1819 he was admitted to the bar, and in 1820he settled in Ashfcabula, 0 , as a lawyer He was also partially occupied in editinga newspaper, and was twice a representative m the State Legislature. A shorttime after his admission to the bar, he was married to his third cousin, Juliet,daughter of Thomas Gnswold, of East Lyme, Conn , who bore him twelve children(eight of whom survive him), and who died in April, 1855 By his second wife,Mrs Caroline R Martin, of Kenosha, 111, he had no children By his third wife,Mrs H C Walker, he had two daughters, both still living

About the year 1832, he lehnquished the practice of his profession, and wasafterwards employed as an ageut for persons at the East in the sale of lands, andduring the latter part of his life was chiefly occupied in farming He died inAshtabula, Nov 15, 1878, of heart disease

HORATIO HUBBELL, the eldest son of Walter Hubbell, Esq, was born in Brook-lyn, N Y , July 9, 1799

At the age of 14 he entered Union College, bukas the climate of Schenectadydid not agree with him he was transferred to this College, which he entered m1815

He studied law in the office of Joseph R Ingersoll, Esq, of Philadelphia, andafter his admission to the bar (in September, 1821), traveled extensively m EuropeHe settled in Philadelphia, and for many years had an extensive practice In 1842he was elected Brigadier General of the Third Philadelphia Bngade

His wife died m the early part of the winter of 1874-75, and his own health be-came soon after much impaired While on a visit to relatives in Pittsburgh, Pa ,he died of apoplexy, July 23, 1875, aged 76 years

WALTER LIVINGSTON, son of Hon Henry W LIVIDgston (Y. C 1786), a memberof Congress from the State of New York, and of Mary (Allen) Livingston, wasborn in Claverack, N Y , July 28, 1799

He spent six months after graduation in Judge Reeve's law school, at Litchfield,Conn, and then devoted three years to travel in this country and in EuropeAfter his return he was elected to the New York Legislature from his nativecounty, but soon removed to Allentown, Pa , where he remained until 1839, serv-ing meantime m both houses of the State Legislature He then removed to Phila-delphia, where he engaged in business for the greater part of the rest of his lifeHe died in that city, Jan 28, 1872, aged 72£ years He marned Miss Mary AGreenleaf, who survived him with children

GEORGE SHELDON", of Aurora Ohio, was born August 26, 1797, and died inColfax, Ind, June 14, 1873, aged nearly 76 years

He spent a year in teaching in Great Barnngton, Mass , and then took a three-years' course in Andover Theol Seminary, He then went to Painesville, Ohio, asa home missionary, being ordained Sept 25, 1823 In October, 1825, he removedto Franklm Mills, 0 , where he remained as pastor until 1830. He was appointedin 1829 agent of the American Bible Society, and for the most of the remainderof hia hfe was employed in its service, and left to it a part of his scanty propertyat his decease He was also financial agent for Western Reserve College from1837 to 1854. About 1854 he was deposed from the ministry of the Presbyterianchurch and suspended from chun h membership, on account of irregularity inobtaining a divorce from his wife and re-marriage, but in 1866 he was restored tofellowship by the church in Bellefontaine, 0 , where he resided from 1856 tillremoval to Indiana m 1870

CHABLBS HUNTINQTON WELD, son of Rev Lewis Weld (Harv Coll, 1789), pastorfor more than 30 years of the Congregational church in Hampton, Conn, and ofElizabeth (Clark) Weld, was born in that town, in 1799

He studied theology for two years m the Andover Theol Seminary, but wasnever ordained His whole life was overshadowed by ill health, caused by dys-pepsia" He was for a time a a agent of the American Bible Society in Mississippi,and subsequently preached in Manlius, N Y, and elsewhere He died at theresidence of his brother, Theodore D Weld, in Hyde Park, Mass, July 14, 1871,aged 72 He was married in 1862 to Mrs Catharine Speer, of Newark, N J,who died in 1865 He had no children

WHITMILL JOHN HILL, a native of Halifax County, N C, died at Scotland Neck,in that county, in February, 1871, mthe 67th year of his age

HENBY ZACHABIAH HAYNER, son of Zachanah and Eve (Clum) Hayner, wasborn in Brunswick, N Y , Sept 18, 1802

He studied law in Troy, N Y , where he was admitted to practice m 1829 audcontinued until 1851 In 1852 he received from President Fillmore the appoint-ment of Chief Justice of the territory of Minnesota. When superseded by achange in the national administration, he opened a law office in New York City,where he continued in practice until the opening of the civil war He served asMajor on the staff of Gen Wool, and later as a Provost Marshal in Baltimore andin New York City After the close of the war ho was engaged m organizingsome mining operations m the Western States, and returned to the East m feeblehealth He died of Bnght's disease, in New York City, m March, 3874, in his 72dyear By hia first wife, Mi«s Mary Hernck, of Sheffield, Mass , he had one son,(a member of the class of 1858, in this College), who was killed in the civil warHe was married twice subsequently, and left one son and two daughters

STEPHEN GALATTT, a native of the island of Scio, in the1 Grecian Archipelago,resided in that island until the massacre of 1822, which drove his family from theirhome. They sought an asylum in Malta, and there met the American missionary,Rev Daniel Temple, by whose advice Stephen, with a younger brother, was sent toBoston m 1823, and thence directly to New Haven, where the brothers preparedfor college, one graduating ID 1829, and one in 1830

They returned to Malta, and later removed to Syra, the capital of the island ofthat name in the group of Cyclades, near Athens. The elder brother was suc-cessful as a merchant, and also served for many years as Judge of the SuperiorCourt. He died in Syra in 1816, at the age of 68, leaving a large family

JAMES IJIOOT AVERILL, son of Ehphalet Avenll, was born in Hartford, Conn, m1811 His mother was Mary, daughter of Hon Jesse Root, of Coventry, ChiefJustice of the Supreme Court of Connecticut

After graduating he studied law, and on being admitted to the bar opened anoffice in New York City, which he soon gave up to enter on a mercantile careerThis resulted disastrously, and for some years he lived m Europe, traveling exten-sively After his return he occupied lnm°elf with journalism, and for severalyears was an editorial writer on the Hartford Times He lived m seclusion inHartford, and gave much time to scientific studies, especially in astronomy andmicroscopy Much of his leisure was devoted to pedestrian tours in the WhiteMountain region, with which he was thoroughly familiar On Sept 20, 1875, heleft Hartford, saying to a friend that he had been for some time m bad health andwas going to Europe to consult physicians. Letters were received from him post-marked Boston on the day following, and on Sept 22 he was met in Portland, Me t

by an acquaintance, to whom he said that he was going to the "White MountainsNo further trace of him has been recovered, and there is reason to suppose that hedid not leave the country, but voluntarily put an end to his life, not long after thelast mentioned date. He was not married.

DAKIEL DUDLEY AVERT, son of Dr. Dudley Avery, of Groton, Conn, and ofMary Anne (Brown) Avery, from Bristol, England, was born in Groton, Apr 12,1810, and died after a lingering illness at his residence on Petite Anse Island, inthe Parish of Iberia^ La, June 8, 1879, in his 10th year

In 1832, he was admitted to the bar in Baton Rouge, La, where he continuedto reside until 1862 Soon after his settlement there he was twice elected to theGeneral Assembly of the State In 1860 he was elected Judge of the CircuitCourt, and held the position until the city of New Orleans was taken by theUnion troops in 1862, when he retired to his sugar plantation on Petite AnseIsland He went the following year to Texas, where he remained till the restora-tion of peace m 1865

He was married m 1831 to Miss Sarah C. Marsh, who died shortly before himBy this marriage there were two sons and three daughters

JAMES RICHARDS FAYEBWEATHER, son of Richard and Hannah (Richards)Fayerweather, was born in New Canaan, Conn, April 27, 1810

He studied law in the office of Hon Hamilton Gamble, m St Louis, Mo, andwas admitted to the bar m that city in 1834, was married Mov 20th of the sameyear to Eliza Ann Doan and shortly thereafter removed to Rushville, 111, andpracticed there m his profession about five years He thence removed to Bur-lington, Iowa, in which place he continued his practice and occupied several civiloffices for some ten years In 1855 he became actively engaged in railroadprojects, then beginning to attroct attention m the west, and was identified withsuch interests for upwards of twenty years

In 1875 he was prostrated by an attack of paralysis from which he suffered twoyears, and the direct result of which was his death on the 27 th day of June,1877, in Burlington

His wife and four sons survived him, two sons having died during his lifetime

ABNEB NEAL, son of a well-known bookseller of the same name, of Balti-more, Md , was born in that city, Aug 7, 1810

He read law with James Mason Campbell, Esq, of Baltimore, and practiced hisprofession there until 1848, when he removed to the town of "Westminster, CarrollCounty, Md, where he continued m the pursuit of his profession until his death,on the 31st of August, 1874, at the age of 64. When Westminister was erectedinto a city, he was elected its first mayor, and filled the office for several years

He was married Feb 2, 1837, to Rose E , daughter of Abraham White, of Bal-timore

WILLIAM HENRY STARR was born in Hartford, Conn, March 27, 1814, theaecond son of Charles and Nancy (Bodge) Starr. His parents removed to NewYork City m 1815, from which place he entered college with the class of 18d3He joined the class of 1834 in the third term of their Freshman year Aftergraduation he studied in the Yale Law School, and m the law office of Hon WmW Kllsworth (Y C IS 10) of Hartford, and finally in New York city, where he wasadmitted to the bar He was married, March 2, 1836, in Farrmngton, Conn, toMiss Frances C , daughter of Jam< s K Camp, and soon after settled in Alton, HIIn 1838, he removed to Burlington, at that time in the Territory of Wisconsin, nowin the State of Iowa, where he spent the most of his life His wife died Dec24, 1874 and his own death occurred Dec 29, 1876 Of their seven children, twosons and two daughters survived them

ARNOLDUS VANDERHOBST DAWSON was born in Charleston, S C, Apr 11,1818, and died in the same city, Feb 26, 1871, aged nearly 53 years Ho studiedlaw, and married Miss Hester Simons, of Charleston, who is also deceased

WALTER THOM\S LENOX was bora m Washington, D C ; Aug 15, 1817, anddied in the same city, July 16, 1874

After graduation he studied law in "Washington, and entered on its practicethere. He was at one time Mayor of the city

' JOHN MASON GRANT, son of Charles and Haunah Grant, was born m Litchfield,Conn , June 14, 1817

He spent four years m theological study,—the first three in the Yale DivinitySchool, and the fourth m the Union Theol Seminary, N Y City, where he alsoattended medical lectures He then spent some years in teaching m New YorkCity and the neighborhood, and in Virginia In March, 1849, he entered the ser-vice of the Maryland Tract Society as colporteur, and continued m this employ-ment until July, 1853 After another interval of teaching, he settled in Balti-more, m January, 1856, as an agent for the sale of religious periodicals In No-vember, 1862, he was appointed as Assistant Assessor of Internal Revenue andwas occupied with the duties of that position and as a book agent for severalyears

The last part of his life was spent m Florida, where he died, at Clearwater Har-bor, Hillsborough County, Nov 3, 1878, aged 61 years.

HENRY "WILLIAM WOOD, son of Andrew and Matilda A "Wood, was born inWashington, Ky, Oct 2,1822, and had graduated at Centre College, Danville, Ky,in 1839, before entering the Junior class in Yale College.

He spent his life m his native place as a dry-goods merchant, and died there,after % few days of violent illness, Feb 9, 1873, aged 50 years

He married, March 20, 1844, Miss Hannah J Lashbrooke, of Washington, whosurvives him, with two sons, and three daughters

CHARLES JOSIAS PENNINGTON, eldest son of Josias and Sophia C (Clapham)Pennmgton, was born in Baltimore, Md , Oct 29, 1826, and died in the same cityMarch 27, 1877, aged 50 years

He studied law in Baltimore, and opened an office there, but in, 1856, hishealth being unsettled, he removed to St Paul, Mine , where he remained threeyears He then returned to the East and accepted a clerkship m the Census Bureauat Washington At the breaking out of the civil war he resigned his position andreturned to Baltimore He did not again practice his profession, but spent thelatter years of his life m retirement at Oakland, Garrett County, Md

He married April 4, 1852, Elizabeth T Winder, of Talbot County, Md, whowith his children—two sons and a daughter—survives him

SIDNEY TENNENT was born Feb. 19, 1827, near Seaford, in Sussex County,Del, and entered college from Philadelphia. Pa

He studied law in Philadelphia, and was admitted to the bar in 1850 In thesame year he went to California, and received the appointment of Inspector of theRevenue for the port of San Francisco, he was also admitted to the bar in that

city and engaged in the practice of his profession. His health failing him, he soonremoved to St Joseph, Mo, where he practiced law for several years, and alsoedited a paper On the organization of the Territory of Kansas in 1854, he settledin Troy, the county seat of Dooiphan County in that Territory, where he had an ex-tensive practice until near the time of his death He died in Troy, of consunoptioniAug 10, 1873, aged 46 years

Col Tennent married Miss Chloe M Smith, of Troy, Apr 26, 1863, by whom hehad one daughter, who died in infancy His widow has since married Col CyrusLeland (Harvard Coll 18^2), of Troy

SAMUEL ALEXANDER STUICKLEB, son of Benjamin and Sarah (Eakin) Stnckler,was born in Shelbyville, Tenn., May 2, 1826

He studied law with an uncle in Nashville, but did not practice. He was inbusiness in Nashville until 1857, and was subsequently clerk in a banking housein New York city

While on his way from New York in May, 1872, to visit relatives in Tennessee,he stopped for a day or two in Indianapolis, Ind , aod there, in a fit of insanity (causedas is supposed by excitement on the subject of religion), took his own life. Hewas unmarried

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BAER was born m Lancaster, Pa , Jan 9, 1834, and diedafter a lingering illness m the same place, Jan 19, 1875

He studied law in the Yale Law School and in the office of Nathaniel Ellmaker,Esq , of Lancaster, and was admitted to the bar in September, 1856 He practicedhis profession in his native place In the summer of 1862 he entered the UnionArmy as Captam of a company of the 122d Regiment Penns Volunteers, but hishealth did not permit his seeing much active service in the field, and he washonorably discharged in April, 1863, on account of physical disability He wasnever married

RUDOLPH MCMURTRIE, only son of Dr B E. and Ellen (Dorsey) McMurtrie, wasborn April 5, 1838, in Huntingdon, Pa , from which place he entered college at thebeginning of the Sophomore year

After graduation he studied law at home, and was admitted to the bar April 15,18b2 He soon after entered the U S Army as a private, and served for ninemonths After his discharge he enlisted in the Navy, where he served for abouta year Returning to Huntingdon he began practice, but after two years, havingno taste for his profession, and having acquired a competent estate by his father'sdeath he abandoned the law and devoted himself to other business. He died inHuntingdon, Nov 9, 1870, after a short illness, leaving a widow, but no childrenHis wife was Jennie, daughter of Hon Seth T. Hurd, of Brownsville, Pa

JOHN ONINS SLAY, son of William Slay, was born m Hazlettville, Kent County,Del, Feb 14, 1839, and entered at the beginning of the Sophomore year, fromCamden, Del, then his father's residence

Upon leaving College he pursued the study of law in the office of Hon MartinW Bates, of Dover, Del, and in October, 1862, was admitted to the bar He prac-ticed law in Dover (in several cases gaining particular credit) until April, 1864,when he removed to Chestertown, Md., as an assistant in the office of Hon GeorgeVickers In a short time Gen. Vickers was elected to the IT S Senate, and MrSlay being admitted to full partnership, the work of the firm mainly devolved uponhim His devotion to business was so incessant, that his health gradually grewweaker under the strain, until about Christmas, 1870, when on account of symp-toms of consumption, developed by close confinement and study, he was obliged toseek rest Rather retrograding then mending, he spent the summer of 1871 inthe Alleghany mountains, and in October of the same year went to Minnesota, butin June, 1872, returned to his father's house at Camden, where he died on the 27thof that month, aged 33 years His unfinished career gave promise of markeddistinction at the bar. He was not married

ALFRED CONRAD PALFREY, son of William T and Sidney A. (Conrad) Palfrey,was born in Franklin, La, March 20, 1839, and died of pneumonia, after a painfulillness of three months, at New Iberia, La, June 18,1879, aged 40 years

On graduation he went to Charleston, S C, where he was married, Nov 27,1860, to Eliza E, eldest daughter of James Tupper, Esq, Master in Equity ofCharleston He was the confidential assistant of his father m-law in his businessuntil the breaking out of the civil war, when he enlisted as a private in the Charles-ton Light Dragoons (afterwards Company K, 4th S C Cavalry). He continuedwith that command until in Oct, 1864, he was appointed assistant Auditor of SCarolina, a position which his failing health made it advisable for him to acceptSoon after the close of the war he resumed his duties m the office of the Master ofEquity, and remained m that employment until the death of Mr Tupper in 1868His wife died in Charleston, May 2,1866, and in 1874 he removed to New Orleans,La In 1876 he was appointed Secretary of the Sugar Shed Association of thatcity, and held this position until his death One son, the last of a family of fourchildren, survives him

ELIAS LOXJGHBOEOUGH KERB, son of Elias Kerr, was born in Fleming, N T ,March 24, 1842

After graduation he studied at the Albany Law School, receiving the degieeLL.B. m May, 1865. He first settled in Lincoln, 111, but removed in the summerof 1867 to Omaha, Nebraska, and a year or two later to Laramie City, WyomingTerritory, where he practiced law until his very sudden death m 1871 He wasunmarried

CORNELIUS SULLIVAN, son of Patrick Sullivan, was born in Bristol, Conn, Aug15, 1846, and died in New York City in June, 1878

On graduation he went to New York City and there studied law and entered onits practice About 1874 he was attacked with pulmonary consumption, and theremaining years of his life were years of much suffering He continued, however,to practice his profession up to the day of his death He was unmarried

At an early age he removed with his father to New Haven, Conn, and he hadalready spent three years as a clerk in a drug store, when m the autumn of 1817he removed to Rochester, N Y He there pursued medical studies with Dr F FBackus (Y C 181 i), m whose drug store he was employed

After his graduation he began the practice of medicine in the village of Geneseo,N Y , but in 1826 became engaged in the manufacture of window glass in Peter-borough, N Y This enterprise not proving successful, he resumed m 1830 thepractice of his profession m Rochester, associating therewith the practice of dent-istry, m which art he was a pioneer m Western New York After three or fouryears he devoted himself wholly to dentistry, in which he continued to be activelyengaged until disabled by rheumatism some six or seven years before his death

He was married in October, 1833, to Henrietta F Hughes, of Hagerstown, Md,,who survived him and died March 21, 1879 Two of their four children are stillliving

During his medical course he spent considerable time in the office of AlansonAbbe, M D (Y C 18'J1), of Litchfield, and soon after receiving his degree he be-gan practice m Naugatuck, Conn, where he remained till the year 1867 Theactive duties of his profession were interrupted in 1848 by a severe and protractedillness from the effects of which he never fully recovered In 1867 he removed toNew Haven, where he spent most of his remaining days

He was married, in Litchfield, Dec 1, 1841, to Mary A Morse, who survives himwith one daughter His only son died in 1856, and one daughter died a few daysafter his own death.

NATHANIEL BOWEN COOKB, son of John and Susan (Bowen) Gooke, was born inCambndgeport, Mass, Feb. 26, 1816

He graduated at Brown University in 1840, and spent the next three years asteacher of a select school in Bristol, R, I He theo spent a brief time in the TheolInstitution in Newton Center, Mass, and in 1844 begun the study of medicine,attending a course of lectures at the Medical School of Harvard University

On receiving his degree he began the practice of his profession, and subsequentlyreturned to school teaching in Webster, Mass, and in Bristol, R I. In 1862 hewas ordained pastor of the Baptist Church, at Greenville, in the town of Leices-ter, Mass In 1869 he was settled over the Baptist Church in Lonsdale, R I ,where he died, April 14, 1871 He was married in April, 1846, to Anne R Mon-roe, of Bristol, who survived him with one daughter.

JOSEPH MANSFIELD HOMISTON died m Brooklyn, N T , Apr 8, 1879, aged 50years. He was a native of Massachusetts, and had practiced in Brooklyn for sev-eral years He had been m waning health for nearly two years.
