1 INTENDED USE OF THIS DOCUMENT

This document defines the requirements for the selection, supply, delivery, and installation of 163

antenna support utility poles (“the poles”) at the SARAO Losberg site complex which is located

approximately 100km from the town of Carnarvon in the Northern Cape Province.

2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

HERA is a project which aims to build 350 low frequency (50 – 250 MHz) antennas at the SKA SA

Losberg site. The primary materials of construction are wood, PVC, and welded mesh.

The antennas use utility poles as their primary supports, and as such the poles are the first items that

are installed prior to any antenna construction.

2.1 SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION

The poles are identified as H0010-2210 in the HERA Product Breakdown Structure [RD1].

2.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

2.2.1 Overview of Poles

A diagram showing pole placement for the 163 poles is shown in Figure 1.

The poles will be placed in an area surrounding an existing installation of 309 poles. The area inside

the existing poles is not accessible by vehicles.

2.2.2 Pole Usage

The poles will be used as supporting structures for 14m telescope antenna dishes as shown in Figure 3,

and experience significant moment loading at the base.

4 REQUIREMENTS

4.1 GENERAL

4.1.1 Quantity

163 poles in total are required which match the requirements in this document. [R1]

4.1.2 Location

The poles shall be installed at the SARAO Losberg Site Complex, approximately 100km from [R2]

the town of Carnarvon in the Northern Cape.

4.2 LAYOUT

4.2.1 Plan Layout

The general layout of the new poles is shown in Figure 1. 4.2.1.1

The absolute location of the existing and new poles is given in Table 1 on Page 14. 4.2.1.2

The location of the poles will be surveyed by SARAO and marked on the ground using 4.2.1.3

appropriate reflector markers (see Figure 4).

The tolerance on the hole drilling is Ø20mm from the marker location. [R3]

The tolerance on the location of the pole in the hole is Ø60mm from the centre of the hole. [R4]

4.2.2 Elevation

The poles shall be planted at a depth of 1.5m (+0.0m; -0.1m). See attached Pole Elevation [R5]

Layout Dwg. [RD3].

4.3 PHYSICAL AND MATERIAL DESCRIPTION

4.3.1 Material

The poles installed shall be eucalyptus poles, supplied in accordance with the requirements of [R6]

SANS 754:2010 [RD2].

4.3.2 Dimensions

All poles shall be no shorter than eight (8.0m: +0.10m; -0.00m) metres in length. Longer poles [R7]

are acceptable.

The top diameter of all 163 poles shall be no less than 200mm (+50mm; -0mm). [R8]

4.3.3 Straightness

Refer to Figure 5.

Crook and sweep, as defined in SANS 754 [RD2], shall be limited to a maximum of 60mm. [R9]

Crook and sweep measurements shall be determined from the ground line (‘TGL’ in Figure 5), [R10]

1.5m from the bottom end.

4.3.4 Preservations

The poles shall be preserved with either a creosote or CCA based product, in accordance with [R11]

SANS 754 [RD2].

4.3.5 Pole Ends

The poles shall be cut square at both ends (90˚ ± 5˚ to the longitudinal axis). [R12]

Appropriate anti-split plates shall be installed on the top surface. [R13]

4.3.6 Quality

The poles shall be of sound wood, free from decay, insect attack, rot pockets, and any [R14]

damages caused by handling and processing that would affect the strength of the poles.

The poles shall be selected from a reputable supplier, who is able to demonstrate, on request, [R15]

evidence of the compliance of the poles to SANS 754 [RD2]. This includes, but is not limited

to, strength and preservation requirements.

4.4 INSTALLATION

4.4.1 Excavation

Holes for the poles shall be excavated by mechanical means only, i.e. hand drilling is not [R16]

permitted.

The excavated hole shall be at least Ø200mm larger than the diameter of the pole at the [R17]

bottom, see Dwg. H0010-2210-001 [RD3].

4.4.2 Verticality

The poles shall be installed to be vertical within 1˚. [R18]

The contractor and SARAO shall monitor the verticality of the poles during installation. [R19]

4.4.3 Backfill and Compaction

After the poles are placed, the contractor shall backfill each excavation with suitable material. [R20]

Backfill soil shall be adequately moistened. i.e. If the soil is held in the hand and squeezed, it [R21]

shall stay compacted after opening the hand.

Backfill shall be compacted in 150mm layers to obtain a minimum of 95% of the density of the [R22]

undisturbed material.

The surface of the backfill around the foundation shall be elevated to ensure that water will [R23]

not accumulate.

The materials used for backfill, the amount used, and the manner of depositing and [R24]

compacting the materials shall be subject to acceptance by SARAO.

5 NOTES

This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature to be helpful, and does not contain

mandatory requirements.

5.1 GROUND TYPE

The ground type at the pole installation locations is a mixture of Type 1 and Type 2 soils, as defined

below. Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) level refers to a standard DCP test which is a measure of

how much resistance the soil has to penetration.

5.1.1 Type 1 Soil

Consistency: Competent soil, with good degree of density, consistent in terms of strength and

toughness. Behaviour is equal or better than the following:

For cohesive soil, moulding is almost impossible with fingers and excavation by spade is difficult. A pick

is normally required. For non-cohesive soil, there is considerable resistance to shovelling.

Texture of cohesive soil: very stiff clay, sandy clay, silty clay, sandy silts and silty sands.

Texture of non-cohesive soil: Compacted well graded gravel, sands and gravel sand mixtures,

permanently above the water table level.

DCP level is 7 – 8.

5.1.2 Type 2 Soil

Consistency: Less competent soil than Type 1. Behaviour is equal or better than the following

For cohesive soil, it can be moulded with fingers using strong to very strong pressure; faint heel marks

visible when stood upon. Excavation with a shovel is difficult. For non-cohesive soils, resistance to

shovelling ranges from low-moderate resistance to high resistance.

Texture of cohesive soil: Firm to stiff clay, sandy clay, sandy silts and silty sands.

Texture of non-cohesive soil: Poor to well graded sand, gravel and gravel-sand mix.

DCP level is 5 – 6.

5.2 HAZARDS AND GENERAL SITE CONDITIONS

5.2.1 Wildlife hazards such as snakes and scorpions are present on site. SARAO promotes

awareness of the working surroundings, and all personnel working on site are

encouraged to be vigilant before approaching or entering confined spaces, shady areas,

or dense plant life.

5.2.2 Minimal shade is available at the HERA site. All personnel working on site are

encouraged to wear appropriate sun protection (e.g. wide brimmed hats, sun cream,

etc.) and drink adequate water.

5.2.3 Depending on the time of year, the site can reach single digit temperatures during the

day and below zero temperatures at night. All personnel working on site are

encouraged to pack appropriate attire.

5.2.4 The tap water is drinkable, but many people prefer to drink bottled water.

5.3 POLE COORDINATES

The pole coordinates are given in Table 1. The first column set gives the absolute coordinates in UTM

values. The second and third column sets give the coordinates relative to a survey marker identified on

the site.

APPENDIX A SARAO INDEMNITY AND RFI AGREEMENT.

VISITORS

(PERSONS OVER 18 YEARS OF AGE)

I…………………………………………………the undersigned, having been given permission to enter

the property, managed by SARAO (“the company”) and recognising the inherent hazards that exist on

premises of this nature, hereby acknowledge that I enter the said property entirely at my own risk and

that I shall have no claim against the company or any of its employees, agents or mandatory’s in respect

of any losses, damages, damage, injury and expenses (”loss”) whether such loss, is a result of any

negligent act or omission on the part of the company or any of its employees, agents, mandatory or

independent contractors or by way of the use of defective materials or equipment supplied by the

company or by way of any human or mechanical error, default or failure occurring on the said property

or whether such loss occurs from any other cause, nothing at all excepted.

I am also aware of restrictions relating to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) that exist within the Radio

Astronomy Reserve Area and on the SARAO Site Premises itself.

I am also aware of the restriction applying to the possession and operation of the equipment that may

radiate Radio Frequency Energy on the SARAO Site

I do hereby acknowledge that I will consciously try to avoid causing any RFI. I will not through any

activity or inactivity on my part cause any RFI to be produced.

I will not bring any Prohibited Equipment onto the SARAO Site nor will I operate my equipment for

which I do not have permission.

This includes but is not limited to; • No Cellular phones, WiFi, Bluetooth, 2-way Radios or other wireless devices are allowed on the SARAO

Site.

• No camera equipment, laptops or other electronics are allowed on the SARAO Site.

• ONLY SARAO Vehicles are permitted in the CORE Area.

• ALL NON- SARAO Vehicles that have been given prior Authorization to enter the SARAO Site, must

park at the LOSBERG COMPLEX.

• NO PETROL or OTHER SPARK-GAP Ignition devices are permitted on the SARAO Site without prior

arrangements.
