Help the Arturo Jiménes Community School
Oné Respe is an organization in the Dominican Republic that works to counter prejudice, discrimination and racism in areas of Santiago, Dominican Republic. The words Oné Respec means Honor and Respect in Creole. Oné Respe was founded as a haven to explore the advancement of solidarity and humanity in the Dominican Republic, and the organization has since flourished. The staff of Oné Respe created a holistic program to benefit the marginalized communities in the DR. Los Platanitos is a small, impoverished community in Santiago, on the Gurabo River. Oné Respe, in hopes of helping the development of the community, together with the families assesed the needs within the community, and found that the mothers of the community needed an oasis for their children to grow and learn while the mother’s were at work in the factories. The school keeps the children out of playing in the polluted river where they would be in peril while their parents are away during the day. The school gives both Haitian and Dominican children in the community an equal opportunity to attend, and works to find unity between the two groups. As of this moment, the school has 159 children from 3 to 9 years old. The escuelita encourages a holistic approach to learning including nutrition, health, as well as psychological support for these children. The school is unique in its pedagogy; they teach reading and writing based on the Dumon theory and math based Cuisenaire rods that teach addition and subtraction in a tangible way. The teachers’ dedication is palpable. Despite the violence, poverty, and challenge of each day, the students and the teachers show up eager and ready. The school is a testament to the importance of community support and organization, education, and dedication. However, as with all nonprofits, the worldwide economic downturn has slowed funding to the school. This fundraiser was designed to help the school maintain their presence in the community by providing the children with a quality education to help them break the cycle of poverty. The faculty, administration, and staff were asked about their immediate needs in order to keep the school alive, and their responses of tangible items that could be provided through funds were taken and priced per child or per month. Although the education of a child gives them an invaluable resource, the resources needed for this education do have a value. Please empower the children of Los Platanitos by sponsoring a project to support their community school. Thank you for your help! The school provides them with pencils and notebooks but pencils go quickly as do erasers. You can provide a box of pencils for a child that will last that child the entire year for only USD $8.00.
