A Successful Start to Our Centennial CelebrationThis year, Finkelstein Memorial Library is celebrating 100 years of operation with many events for the public. On Sunday, April 23 we commemorated our centennial year by holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house. The day kicked off with the Spring Valley High School Marching Band and a flag ceremony was presented by the Girl and Boy Scouts of the Haverstraw Minisceongo Service Unit. Marta Rodriguez sang the national anthem. President of the Board of Trustees David Hershkowitz made opening remarks followed by a moving speech by Rena Finkelstein, president of the Friends of Finkelstein Library. (The Finkelstein family donated the original building in 1941 as a permanent home for the library.)Rockland County dignitaries and valued friends of the library, including New York State Senator David Carlucci, New York State Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, Rockland County Supervisor Ed Day and Rockland County legislators Philip Soskin, Alden Wolfe, Aney Paul and Aron Wielder, shared special moments they have had at the library at different periods of their lives. Four proclamations were presented by local officials. Rena Finkelstein, assisted by David Hershkowitz, cut the ribbon and the original library entrance on S. Madison Avenue was then opened to the public. There were continuous live music performances on all three floors of the library throughout the day. Additional events included an audio-visual presentation of the library and its role in the history of Spring Valley, art and photography displays, and a video showing of interviews reflecting the library’s role in the lives of it’s users. Collectively, these memories are the glory of library services, and we will continue this project until the end of this year. Come to the library and share your library experience!

Highlights of the ribbon-cutting ceremony are posted on the library’s homepage.
