Welcome to the EBSCOhost Digital Archives Viewer tutorial. In this tutorial, we will use the American Antiquarian Society Historical Periodicals Collection Series 1 database to look at the key

Digital Archives features, including how to use the Digital Archives Viewer to view full text.

Let’s begin by creating a search for the term Boston on the Advanced Search screen. Since the default search sifts through metadata only, it is best to expand your list of results by choosing All Text from the Select a Field

drop-down menu. You should also check the box beside “Also search within the full text of the articles.”

An EBSCOhost result list with articles relevant to your search term is displayed. Click an article title to view the citation for the article. To view the full text of an article, click the View Full Text link below

the article title.

You may also refine your search results from the Result List screen by using the facets on the left. Set a custom date range, narrow by subject and/or material type, or search for results containing

illustrations or images. You may also sort your result list by Relevance, Date Oldest, Date Newest, Source or Author.

The article’s first page is displayed in the Digital Archives Viewer. You can expand the window by using the small gray arrows on the left and right sides of the Viewer.

Beginning with the toolbar at the bottom, you have several options for viewing the page. Click the button in the far left of the toolbar to fit the entire page in the viewport. Click the single page to fit the page to the

viewer window, or click the double pages to view two pages at a time. Click the + and - icons to zoom in and out.

Use the navigation arrows to navigate through the article pages. You can also go directly to a specific page by entering the desired page number in the page number field. Add the article to the EBSCOhost folder by

clicking the folder icon at the top of your screen above the article page.

Rotate the page to the left by clicking the rotate button on the right side of the bottom toolbar. This can be useful if you are viewing an illustration that needs to be rotated in order to view it properly. Next to the rotate

button is a yellow ABC button, which you click to highlight or un-highlight your search terms within the article.

The Document Map allows you to go to a page by simply clicking on it. Pages highlighted in yellow indicate pages that include your search term(s). Your terms will also appear highlighted in yellow on the page itself.

Hold your mouse over a page to see a preview.

Document Map icons indicate the type of content on each page, such as pages with illustrations or notes. Click these icons to filter pages by type of content. To minimize the document map, click the x

in the upper right.

Using the Page Map feature, you can move around the page you are viewing by dragging the yellow highlighted box to a different area of the map. If you would like to view more of the page, click the x in the

upper right corner of the map to minimize it.

In the left-hand column, you can Search within the entire issue, or if you would like, within only the page you are currently viewing. Click the Detailed Record link to reveal the citation information for the current article in EBSCOhost. To add only the current page to the folder, click the folder icon found next to the

page number below the toolbar.

Returning to the Digital Archives Viewer, you can navigate back to the EBSCOhost result list, or the search screen, using the links in the upper left corner. You also have the ability to browse through all available

issues of a title by clicking Choose Another Issue on the left. Select a year and then select an available issue.

The Contents section displays the issue’s Table of Contents. Click on a hyperlinked title to view any article in the list. If you add items to the folder, they will appear in the Folder Items section. You can

go directly to the folder by clicking the Folder View link. If there are images available in the issue, they will be found under

Illustrations. Click on a thumbnail to view the full illustration.

Using the buttons on the right, you can email or save a PDF version of the article, add a note to the page or article you are viewing that can be saved to your personal folder, or copy a persistent link to the

article.

The Bookmark and Annotate feature gives you the ability to create notes on individual pages of a document and save them to your My EBSCOhost folder for access at a later time. Simply click the

Bookmark and Annotate icon, fill out the Create Note field, and click the Save button.

After saving your note, it will appear under Folder Items in the column on the left. Hover your pointer over the preview icon to view details of your note. Click on the Folder View link to view the note from

within the EBSCOhost folder.

In the folder, your saved note can be accessed by clicking Notes in the menu on the left. You can view the note by clicking on the note title. Click the View Context link to view the page on which you took the note. To save your notes beyond the current session, sign in to your personal My EBSCOhost folder account.
