Supported by the AGN Racewalk Commission A voice for all walkers!

26 August 2017. The day dawned cold and breezy – unusually the wind has become a bit of a factor in Pretoria this year. We

thought that the breeze was light enough that it would not be a factor – but for many of us it appears to have been quite

negative to walking times.

Our top walkers turned up in strength to walk or support. Lebogang Shange spectated, whilst Wayne Snyman decided to have a walk, and we were all privileged to see this magnificent athlete in full stride! Lebogang was drawn into the event to present medals to medallists – a great honour to be presented ones medal by such a superb athlete!

Although we were missing Anel Oosthuizen who walked earlier the same morning in blistering humid conditions at the World Student

Games in Taipei, Taiwan. The women still had some stiff competition to deal with however since Zelda Schultz (who has recently moved up from Natal) decided to make the race her own.

payment. We hope to have an amateur again at the next race! Please note there are also many more photos available. It was a cold morning with a colder wind coming from the east. The course is slightly uphill towards the east so one had the cold wind against you up the “hill” and with you down – where it takes away on the one side but gives nothing back!

It did not take long for Lebeauf von Benecke (M50: 51:30) to assert his superiority! He led all of us from start to finish.

Ronel Viljoen (W35) probably had the best walk of the day – no complaints from her about the chilly wind as she strode through to a PB in 56:27! It will be interesting to see what she can do at the coast.

The other ladies in the race were Winnie Koekemoer (W65, 1:05:35), Anna Greyvenstein (W70, 1:07:38) and Nicolene Gericke (W55,1:13:32). Winnie Koekemoer Anna Greyvenstein Nicolene Gericke

Although held after the master’s race, there was still a chilly wind blowing at the start of the open event.

Zelda Schultz has moved up to Pretoria from Natal and she adds a nice challenge to our local ladies! She was an easy winner in the ladies race in 52:58 having lapped the entire rest of field – Well done Zelda, it is always tough to be racing against yourself and the clock!

Nthatisi “Bosslady” Mokhele came through in a solid second place in 59:23.

There was an interesting battle for third place with Rhoda van Staden putting in a strong second 5 km to almost catch the tiring Chanice Klink. Chanice was 32 seconds ahead at half way but beat off the challenge by a slim 6 seconds at the end. Althea Potgieter made an easy fifth, and Natalie Lubbe, having a bad day finished in sixth position. Rose Shabalala had a fast start but dropped out after 2 km.

The Junior race probably represents the most closely contested race of the day! Although Sylvester Kalani led much of the way it was the ever stronger Vincent Nhlapo who came out in front in an excellent 53:47 to take Gold.

IAAF Championships LONDON 2017 - 20km walk

Lebogang Shange finished 4th after a brilliant catch up that put him

in the leading spot with just 1km to go! In the process Lebo broke the SA record (again). It was an amazing performance, and Lebo’s brave attempt at the podium gave a huge thrill to South Africans who where watching and supporting him and was so spectacular that it entirely confused the commentators! His time of 1:19:18 is the second best African performance ever behind Tunisia's Hatem Ghoula 1:19:02 from 1997. Lebogang was 17 seconds down at the 15 km but came all the way through to take the lead. Although he could not hold on to the first position (this time) he nevertheless smashed his previous PB and South African records by 48 seconds! Grace Wanjiru of Kenya was the first African to cross the finish line, clocking 1:35:22 to finish 37th.

Yehualeye Beletew ETH 1:37:55, This performance puts Lebogang at the head of South Africa’s charge for medals at the Commonwealth games 20km next year (Lebo was the first commonwealth athlete over the line in London).

FRIEDA BLIGNAUT Grand Master Yes where do I start? There is not much to tell. I do not have a coach and certainly am not coaching! I still need a lot of working on form, especially my arms, and overall my technique. As a child growing up in Swakopmund there was no interest really in athletics. What I do remember is my Dad giving me and my brother, Fanie Rossouw, each a glass of milk with raw egg and honey before a sports day. Cannot even remember the distances we had to run. For us it was nicer to rather go for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean and to enjoy the surf than to attend the sport days. When swimming for a while we got too cold and ran over the road into the dunes for some dune surfing to get warm and then back for some more swimming. Our favourite spot was called “Die Badewanne” In high school I participated once in the 1500m run and also did some hurdles for one season that brought me as far as the SWAIKS athletics meet. I was more into hockey and swimming. My hobbies are reading, swimming and travelling, travelling, travelling. So if possible I try to combine a race with a travelling experience A good example is the Kilimanjaro Half Marathon: (28 February 2016 21.1 km - 2:45:29).

Kilimanjaro Half Marathon

I started walking socially around 2007. I found that after walking the first three, four km through some aches and pains I started to enjoy the race and then: - it was all over! So I began to think about

the half marathon. My first one was the 30th Voet van Afrika in 2007 (this year will be my 10th). I started to do more races as my late husband enjoyed to accompany me on weekends for races like Meiringspoot, Knysna, Kango, and even to Vic Falls and Windhoek. We had lovely weekends away whilst I continued to enjoy my sport. I was starting to enjoy the vibe and the adrenaline rush before the start of a race and made a lot of friends.

A 50km before a full marathon! When I became more serious about my walking, I joined the Paarl Athletics Club, and then one day in 2011 I got hold of a flyer of the Cape Town Festival of Running and one of the races was a 50km relay. It was then a 10km loop and teams where made up of 5 runners. I entered as a one woman team under a lot of protest from my husband. But I did it and received 5 medals! I was absolute elated! I realized then that if I set myself goals I can achieve them. One of the many athletes I befriended, Mary Schippe, always told me I must come and join the race walking group. Then her husband Henk with whom I walked many running road races, once told me that he also thinks I must join. So I started to steal with my eyes when walking behind a racewalker during a road race and googled about techniques. As I was still learning about race walking another friend, Pierre Perold, with whom I walked many races, said we must enter the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon (SCTM). But I was not so sure at first as I was not in serious training. Weekends was the only time that I did any walking (at races). But I am always up for a challenge. We entered the 2013 SCTM and the morning of race day at the start Pierre asked why I am nervous as the cut off is 8 hours. And I told him that I cannot walk for eight hours and we should try for six hours. And we came in under 6 hours! Last year was my fourth SCTM and my time was 05:29:13.

First Ultramarathon

In 2014 I began to participate in the Leo Benning meetings as well as the Race Walking Grand Prix’s at Youngsfield and learned a lot from my fellow walkers. In 2015 I joined Sanlam Road Running Club and attended their Time Trials on Wednesday’s. My training sessions were still over weekends doing races. I started noticing that my race times are coming down. I participated in the Western Province Championships and did well with two silver medals. I was awarded Western Province colours for the first time. I then entered the SAMA Championship that was held in Port Elizabeth. I did not have any expectations but wanted some experience and also to see what is race walking really about. And I came home with a bronze in the 5000m and a gold in the 20km walk road race in my age category!

Unbelievable what this bronze medal did for me as I did not have the speed for a short distance. I decided I had to start working to better my time. Some serious training was waiting. But somehow it did not happen. In 2016 I joined the training sessions of Jürgen Spencer at the Bellville Velodrome on a Wednesday. I learned a lot from him regarding form, technique and heartrate etc. But the workouts were too hard for me as I was resting during the week with only the club time trials on Wednesday afternoons. During the races over weekends I really gave everything and my body could just not handle the stress of the hard sessions. Not fit enough? Most probably!

The 20km road race in Port Elizabeth

I entered the WPA Championships, and again walked away with two silver medals in the 5000m and the 20km road race. Was awarded WPA colours for 2016 and entered the SAMA Championships at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria. It was a privilege to be on the track with athletes like Elsa Meyer, Winnie Koekemoer, Barbara Nell and Lucia Willemse, and then earn a bronze for 5000m and a silver for the 20km in my age group.

The wet 20 km roadrace in Pretoria

For me a very big achievement was to participate in the African Centurion 24H Race in October 2016. Unfortunately due to blood pressure (too low) I had to stop after 103.3km - 18:45:54 But still I was very proud of myself for doing it without any support and not knowing really what to expect. So this year my goal is to finish this race and I know I will be better prepared! In November 2016 I entered the Pollsmoor Peninsula Vasbyt, but then could only do the first day race of 40km as the Edgemead 10km race on the Saturday also became a league race.

25 November 2016 - Pollsmoor Peninsula Endurance Walk: 40.00 KM - 05:58:28

Combining travel and walking is a great way to add flavour to an event so in February 2015 I did the Cango Marathon 21.1km Walk in Oudtshoorn in 02:29:06 and then in February 2017 I bettered my time by finishing in 02:27:26. Talking about combining travel and walking races. I also did the Windhoek City Run 21.1km walk three times. In 2013 I got second place overall female and first place in my age category. Sponsors were Telecom Namibia. Nedbank then became the sponsors and changed the name to Nedbank City Run. (Personally I thought that this name change was a mistake) In both 2015 (02:35:07) and 2016 (02:35:59) I was also the overall female winner in the 21.1 Km Walk. This year has been great so far. I earned a silver for the 5000m and a gold for the 20km walk at the WPA Championship in March.

WPA Championships

Western Province team at the SAMA Championships

Once again I was awarded WPA Colours, and in April I did my best ever best for the Two Oceans Half marathon (02:32:26) and felt really great. I went out that morning saying that I am going to just do it as a training session and look what happened! Then I entered the SAMA Championship and earned a bronze medal for the 5000m and a gold medal for the 20km walk. And a very big achievement for me was to receive my SA Colours at the SAMA Awards Function. Frieda wearing her freshly earned SAMA National colours!

Another highlight for me this year was the full marathon I did in Zimbabwe – the Vic Falls Marathon In 2013 and 2015 I only did the half marathon. It was a real challenge because it gets hot although it is winter and for me coming from the coast the thin air is also a challenge. My time was 05:36:50.

The course at Victoria falls

But I think the biggest achievement this year so far was the Orak 12 Hour Circuit Race in Vredendal on the 1st of July! I walked 80km in a time of 11:39:50!!

Field of the circuit race just before sunrise

My personal best times so far are as follows: 30 km - 3 Sept 2016, Race Walking Grand Prix 4: 03:35:45 20 km - 5 Aug 2017, WPA Race Walking Grand Prix 3: 02:18:07 10 km - 24 June 2017, WPA Race Walking Grand Prix 2: 01:06:47

I became a member of the 1000 km Challenge Club, and am pleased to say that I did 1285.30 km for the 2016/2017 year. My times have improved this last year, And that makes me hopeful to achieve more. It takes dedication and perseverance to achieve your goals and I still have a lot to learn and to achieve and need all the experience I can get. But the main reason I walk is for the joy and pleasure I derive from it. Gathering together with fellow walkers and enjoying their company and their competition during an event. I thank my Lord for my health and the protection during the races. My advice to all the readers is to go out - reach for your dreams and make it happen!

Coming meetings SWD Champs 28 October 2017 Oudtshoorn AFS Champs 11 November Bloemfontein The proposed dates for SAMA Champs 2018 in Bloemfontein is 26-28 April 2018. In the August edition it was stated that Wayne Snyman’s 10 km time on the 5

th August was the fastest walked in South Africa. This

is incorrect. Apologies for misleading my readers! Wayne Snyman walked a PB of 1:20:46 on the 16th April. So now that I have hopefully defeated the big ’C’ it is time to start from the bottom and get fit again. With only about 6 weeks to the SA interprovincial this is really quite a challenge. The Op was conducted by a fellow athlete Dirk Ligthelm (11 Comrades, 6 silvers PB (2016) of 6:58:23). I am making a remarkable recovery which I attribute partly to his skill as a surgeon, His fitness, my fitness and the thoughts and prayers of so many. At the recent AGN Grand Prix young Vincent Nhlapo heard of my illness and he took me aside and prayed over me. I was moved to tears after. I am not sure what Vincent’s career plans are – but perhaps he should consider being a pastor! I am tremendously grateful to Dirk for the superb job he did, as well as to the hospital staff and my family for looking after me as well as every one of you that sent good wishes and kept me in prayer – THANK YOU! Remember that the website for back issues is http://racewalking.letlapa.com and please contribute to the facebook page (South African racewalkers). Make this YOUR newsletter rather than mine – be a part of the fabric of South African Racewalking.
