Living our mission—to protect and enhance life—goes beyond the products and services that we offer. To truly live our mission, we have made a long-term commitment to serve our communities, by building a healthier and safer world.

Our eGIVE program does just that, enabling our employees to be ambassadors in their communities by forming partnerships with non-profit organizations aligned with the five strategic pillars of the program: Advancing Global Health, Protecting Those That Protect Us, Educating Tomorrow’s Scientific Leaders, Improving Our Communities and, new in 2017, Sustaining Our Environment.

Our 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility Report highlights stories as told by representatives from some of these enduring partnerships, each of which was selected by an employee-led, community eGIVE team. Important to each partnership is our ability to positively impact the mission and goals of each organization, helping them and those who they serve to thrive. I am proud of the leadership, effort and commitment of our many employee volunteers. This degree of caring and generosity to help others is both uplifting and the heart of who we are as a company.

As we enter our 20th anniversary year as a company and our fifth year of the eGIVE program, we commit anew to building a healthier and safer world by focusing on our five pillars, and to helping individuals experience the fullness of life.

Emergent has created a Dollars for Doers program that annually recognizes the top three volunteers from each

eGIVE regional program. Each Doer can request that a donation be made to a community charity of his or her choice.

ADVANCING GLOBAL HEALTH

KATIE BLAHA | DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

When Emergent acquired its Camden location in Baltimore, Maryland, in 2014, the site wasted no time setting up a regional eGIVE team. One of the first organizations it partnered with was the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), which a Camden employee―whose child has type 1 diabetes (T1D)―suggested. The site created a fundraising team, and has participated in JDRF’s One Walk for three years now. The team raised nearly $3,000 in 2017, and is among the top 15 corporate teams in the Baltimore area.

“Emergent employees are amazing,” says JDRF Development Manager Katie Blaha. “They help us attack T1D from both the fundraising angle and through attendance and engagement on the day of One Walk.”

JDRF is the leading global organization funding T1D research. It creates awareness of this autoimmune disease, which can affect anyone regardless of gender, health or diet, connects patients and their families to resources, and

advocates for government support and research. The JDRF One Walk brings together more than 3,000 people in the Baltimore area.

“We’re trying to find a cure for T1D,” says Katie. “Support from corporate partners like Emergent BioSolutions helps us get closer and closer to achieving that goal every day.”

“ Emergent employees bring a wonderful energy to One Walk. They build momentum for the event and make lasting connections in the community.”

ADVANCING GLOBAL HEALTH

Emergent has partnered with the American Red Cross (ARC) for more than a decade, supporting the organization in its pursuit to prevent and alleviate human suffering. Since the mid-2000s, members of Emergent’s leadership team have served on the board of directors for the ARC. Dino Muzzin, Vice President and Lansing site head, and Laura Kennedy, Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer, currently serve on the board for the Mid-Michigan and National Capital chapters, respectively.

“Emergent’s support of the Red Cross is robust,” says Tim Wahlers, regional partnership officer with the National Capital chapter. “They have hosted blood drives at several Emergent sites, participated in our Home Fire Safety Campaign by installing free smoke alarms in high-risk neighborhoods and made significant financial contributions for relief efforts during natural disasters.”

In 2017, Emergent set up a micro-site for employees to contribute to relief efforts in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico after multiple devastating hurricanes, raising nearly $25,000 in four weeks! Through quarterly blood drives, employees donated more than 160 units of blood, each of which can save up to three lives.

“ Whether it’s rolling up their sleeves to give blood, or going door-to-door installing smoke alarms, Emergent volunteers are passionate and hands-on!”

PROTECTING THOSE THAT PROTECT US

The USO (United Service Organizations) strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country throughout their service to the nation. Emergent has worked with the USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore since 2013 to support military service members and their families.

“Our partnership with Emergent is highly successful,” says USO Center Supervisor Melyssa Haubenstricker. “Their support allows us to provide important programs to the service members who protect our country, and their families who sacrifice so much for that service.”

One of those programs is Operation Back to School. Since 2013, employees of the Montgomery County/D.C. regional eGIVE team have partnered with the USO to help sponsor and volunteer at an on-base event that gives hundreds of military children a

backpack filled with school supplies. After visiting a series of stations that focus on a subject they’d encounter in school, the children turn in their “report card” to receive their backpack. To date, Emergent has assisted with packing and distributing more than 10,000 backpacks destined for three military bases in the greater Washington, D.C., area.

In 2017, Emergent funded a new Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) USO Lounge at Fort Meade in Maryland. The MEPS Lounge provides a place for incoming recruits and their families to relax and spend time together before the new service member ships out to basic training. During its first year of operation, more than 9,500 service and family members from across the country used the MEPS Lounge.

“ The day a new service member swears in and ships out to basic training is unbelievably nerve-wracking. The MEPS Lounge brings comfort because it shows that our community is behind them.”

EDUCATING TOMORROW’S SCIENTIFIC LEADERS

TERI BERNERO | DIRECTOR OF PATHWAY PROMISE & HOPE PROMISE SCHOLAR PROGRAMS

“Emergent’s support of the students in the Lansing School District is phenomenal,” says Teri Bernero, Director of the Pathway Promise and HOPE Scholarship Programs. “We appreciate the time and talent Emergent provides to make a difference in students’ education and attitudes. They’ve provided classroom supplies, science equipment and dollars for the Lansing Promise and HOPE Scholarships. Employees have helped with science lessons and painting school hallways to create a welcoming place for students and their families.”

The Lansing Pathway Promise encourages businesses, government agencies and non-profits

to support education in the district. Learning pathways offer students relevant coursework through business and industry partnerships, providing students real-world learning opportunities that foster career and college readiness. Upon graduation, eligible students receive the Lansing Promise or HOPE Scholarship to attend Lansing Community College, Michigan State University or Olivet College.

Emergent began supporting the district in 2010. Since then, the company opened their doors for facility tours to more than 350 students, and, in 2016, began awarding work-based scholarships

to three STEM students each year. Emergent created a Lansing Promise public service announcement featuring Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and recently took responsibility for a program that provides weekend food kits to students in need.

“Thanks to the support of businesses like Emergent, we’re reducing barriers that prevent children from pursuing a post-secondary education,” says Executive Director of the Lansing Promise Justin Sheehan. “We’re giving students a real opportunity to achieve their dreams.”

“ Students think, ‘There are people who have never met me that are investing in me. Because of them, I can go to college.’ ”

EDUCATING TOMORROW’S SCIENTIFIC LEADERS

Patterson High School in Baltimore, Maryland, is determined to become one of the nation’s top 500 schools. Patterson knows the key to achieving that is by partnering with industry leaders, like Emergent, to prepare students for college and careers.

“Our relationship with Emergent began four years ago when employee volunteers served as judges for our STEM competition,” says Nick Yates, a math, engineering and computer science teacher at Patterson. “Since then, Emergent has grown their support by hosting tours of their

facilities, sending employees to present as guest speakers and providing financial support that enables students to compete in STEM competitions and go on industry-related field trips.”

With 13 career-themed pathways, Patterson is a career center school, with roughly 1,100 students of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds. Emergent supports the engineering pathway, inviting students to visit its unique, state-of-the-art Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing (CIADM). In partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human

Services, the CIADM is intended to facilitate advanced development of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear medical countermeasures and provide domestic manufacturing surge capacity to address the U.S. government’s preparedness priorities and needs.

“We strive to give students exposure to what it’s like in their preferred career field,” says Nick. “Seeing Emergent employees in action and interacting with them helps students envision what their career can be.”

The partnership between Emergent and the Siloam Mission in Winnipeg, Manitoba, began with a small donation and an invitation for employees to serve a meal. Siloam serves three meals per day, with an average of 470 people per meal.

“Hope begins with a meal,” says Director of Major Gifts and Corporate Relations Judy Richichi. “People experiencing homelessness come to us for food, then realize we have so many other services to help them improve their current situation, like employment training, transition and mental health services.”

Siloam Mission is a connecting point between the compassionate and Winnipeg’s less fortunate. The Mission alleviates hardships and provides opportunities for change for those affected by homelessness.

It has been four years since the Winnipeg eGIVE team’s initial volunteer experience with Siloam, and their partnership has grown exponentially. Employees coordinate the Christmas Backpack Program annually, donating and packing 135 backpacks full of personal hygiene items and warm winter clothing to give to Siloam guests on Christmas morning. They also volunteer in the sorting area, and bring their children to cookie-baking events. In 2017, Emergent funded a new sterilization laboratory as part of Siloam’s “Make Room” expansion campaign, where volunteer medical professionals can run medical tests safely.

“Emergent’s response is always ‘How can we help?’” says Judy. “They take pride and ownership in the work they do with us, and that encourages other organizations to get involved, too. Their passion brings new life to our organization and the Winnipeg community.”

“ Emergent is informed about the work we’re doing in the community, and their employees show up to help. They go above and beyond to respond to the Mission’s needs.”

Safeguarding the Environment of Our Communities

Employee-Led Initiatives

Emergent is committed to conducting business operations in a safe, sustainable manner, and to working with community organizations to better the environment. In 2017, we added Sustaining Our Environment as the fifth pillar of the eGIVE program. At the corporate level, we are working to implement an environmental management system that aligns with ISO 14001 standards, a priority project led by our Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Center of Excellence. In our communities, employee-led teams, such as Winnipeg’s Green Initiative Group and Lansing’s EHS Committee, are driving local green initiatives.

In partnership with Kimberly-Clark, our Winnipeg EHS Department launched a garment recycling program for all single-use garments worn by employees who work in manufacturing. In its first month, the program diverted approximately 1,400 pounds of waste from the landfill! All recycled garments are made into new products like chairs, planters and shelving.

The Lansing eGIVE team partnered with the local EHS Committee to implement a recycling program at the 22-acre campus. The program included deploying more than 70 recycling receptacles to collect tin and aluminum, plastic and refundable cans/bottles. The team also launched a campaign to emphasize the importance of paper recycling, and eliminated the use of polystyrene products. In the first six weeks of the program, 1,100 refundable cans and bottles were returned, and the deposits were donated to benefit the local Ronald McDonald House!
