Surah Al Qamar (Ayah 46 - 49) 19th January, 2013

I n t r o d u c t i o n

The Surah’s of the Quran have an introduction, main topic(s) and the conclusion. The beginning of Surah Al Qamar mentions clear signs from Allah then in the middle we have stories of different nations that denied Allah’s signs and how Allah dealt with those nations. Now the Ayat towards the end of the Surah are the conclusion. Here Allah addresses the disbelievers (Kuffar Quraish) at the time of the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him). The reason for Kuffar’s disbelief was not that they could not understand Allah’s clear signs, but their main problem was their arrogance. It was their arrogance that led them to believe that as a group they could defeat anyone. However in the first battle between the believers and Kuffar, an army of 300 believers defeated 1000’s of Kuffar Quraish. Allah tells the disbelievers that this defeat is only their punishment in this Duniya and there is much worse to come in the Hereafter.

A y a h 4 6

Previously in Ayah 45, Allah tells the disbelievers that they will be defeated and they will turn their backs and run away. The defeat was their punishment for disbelief in this Duniya. Now in Ayah 46, Allah tells the disbelievers that they be inflicted with a great torment on the Day of Judgment. Here an important thing to note if people are punished in this life and they are alive then this is a mercy from Allah. Many disbelievers at the time of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) accepted Islam after their defeat. So the defeat was infact a mercy from Allah in the form of another chance so the disbelievers could think and come back to Islam. Here it is said “come back to Islam” as all humans are born with Islam but the Shaitaan and the distractions take us away from Islam. This is why Allah brings us signs in this life to return back to our nature (It is our nature to believe in Allah and to not associate any partners with him). This is Allah’s mercy but people who don’t realize it are against their own selves. They will be inflicted with punishment in hereafter which is much worse than the Duniya

اعة .means “the hour” this refers to the appointed time for the Day of Judgment ٱٱلس

“The hour” is the time about which no one knows. Not even the messengers know when is the Day of Judgment. The Day of Judgment is the day when we will be judged and questioned about:

1. What did we do in our life ? 2. What did we do in our youth ? 3. What did we do in our spare time ? 4. What did we do with our knowledge?

The basic question that we will be asked is what have we done with our life? The answer to this is La Illah Ha illallah. In this life we have do good deeds, believe in Allah and be a slave of Allah. When we do anything we have to seek help of Allah and whenever we do anything it should be only for the sake of Allah. Actually the reason for our creation is to judge how much is one obedient to Allah and how is one fulfilling the rights of Allah?

means “appointment”. No one is aware when is the Day of Judgment. This is the appointment time موعدهھھھم that is known to Allah only.

Day of Judgment is of two types.

a. Minor

b. Major.

When a person dies his Minor Day of Judgment starts. Minor Day of Judgment is when everyone individually in his or her graves will be questioned. The Major Day of Judgment is when all of the people will be resurrected and they will be called for accounts in front of Allah. We cannot go to Paradise by ourselves or with our good deeds alone. The way to paradise is by seeking Allah’s help. When we seek his help he will bring all the means to make us go to paradise. Allah just wants our heart. Allah asked us to rely on him, as he knows best what we are asking for. Allah will guide us to what suits us according to our nature. Everyone wants to go to paradise and every individual has a different nature so the way to paradise is different for each person. For some it can be sabr, for others repentance and for someone it can be through fasting etc.). In order to know what is good for us we need to rely on Allah alone and he will choose the best way for us to go to paradise. No one is left out from his mercy except those who makes themselves left out by not relying on Allah.

اعة ”means “The Day of Judgment ووٱٱلس

The Day of Judgment is about belief. On that day believers will be treated differently than the disbelievers. Allah will make the same day and the same place different for different people. Some people will be under the shade while others will be sweating. Those who believe and have taqwa will have security on that day. As for the disbelievers it will be the worse thing they have experienced. Basically everyone will get treated as per his belief and righteousness.

In this Ayah it is mentioned about the disbelievers. Allah is describing how the Day of Judgment will be for the disbelievers. Allah is addressing to the Kuffar Quraish and also to anyone who follows Quraish in their disbelief and disobedience

.means “ more severe” and “intense” .No one can imagine this severity and intensity أأددهھھھى

This is for the disbelievers. Nothing can cut the person into pieces out of fear except for Day of Judgment. Nothing is more severe and intense than the Day of Judgment.

.means “more bitter (in taste)” i.e. nothing is good in it أأمر

It is bitter due to the regret. Regret is worse than the punishment. Allah will make the disbelievers realize how many times guidance came to him yet they denied and disbelieved. Guidance came and they did not accept it that is why it is called bitter in taste

A y a h 4 7

Here Allah is describing the state of the disbelievers. As the disbelievers deny the clear evidence from Allah

therefore Allah calls them ٱٱلمجرميین

.”is from “Mujrim”, which is from which means “to commit a crime ٱٱلمجرميین

The worse crime is the crime that a person commits against his own self. The main thing that Allah wants from us is to believe in him therefore if someone does not believe in Allah then he commits a crime. That crime is against his own self. If someone disbelieves it does not harm or affect Allah. If a person does good he benefits himself. Similarly if someone does not believe in Allah then he only harms himself by depriving himself from eternal happiness i.e. Jannah. Day of Judgment is not because Allah wants to seek revenge but

Allah’s judgment is to see who benefited himself and who harmed himself. This is why Allah calls them

.ٱٱلمجرميین

ل ـ .”means “misguidance”. This is from Dalla, which means, “mistaken ضل

The one who does harms himself by disobeying Allah is actually misguided and has mistaken the way. ل ـ ضلis misguidance in the Duniya and Hereafter. Everyone wants to go to Paradise. There are people who are guided to go to Paradise and others who are misguided to go to Paradise. How will people be misguided? Our steps in life will be our steps on the Day of Judgment. People are misguided as they lost their way to Paradise. One gets the misguided in Hereafter because he is misguided in the Duniya. Now the question is how can one be misguided in the Duniya. Misguidance in the Duniya is in two things:

1. Misguidance in Knowledge 2. Misguidance in Actions

The disbelievers will be misguided in this life in Knowledge and Actions due to which they are mistaken about the way to Paradise. They are lost in the Duniya by two ways. One is in the Knowledge meaning a person is negligent – e.g. if someone does not know how to pray, how to fast, do not know about Haram/Halal. The life in Duniya is a life of deception. We seek knowledge about different things but we don’t have the knowledge about going to paradise. Without Knowledge (ilm) one cannot know the way to go to Paradise. Other misguidance is in one’s Actions. When we have the knowledge we need to act upon it. This means:

1. Actions of the heart 2. Actions of the limbs

The heart’s action is to belief. Action can be with Ittebah / Aamaal. We need to act with our limbs.

.means “Hellfire “A blazing fire, the flames of which, will burn the faces, bodies, hearts and everything سعر This burning will be eternal for those who did not believe in Allah and associated partners with him.

Among the names of Hell fire is Saeer. Saeer is from Saa’ra, which means blazing fire. Saa’ra also means sound, which is the screaming and shouting, of the disbelievers in hellfire. We must not think that hell fire is unfair but infact it is justice. Allah sends clear signs to people so they can save themselves from Hellfire but the disbelievers reject Allah’s signs and they commit crime against themselves. Allah’s Judgment is not unjust but it is fair. We need to have Allah’s love, hope and fear. This triangle is very important, as it is the balance. Allah’s love is important because without his love it is very stressful to worship him. We need to have hope in his mercy and we need to fear his punishment.

Punishment in hellfire will be mental torture and physical torture. Here the physical torture is described. The most honorable part for human being in his body is the face. The pride of a person who rejects Allah’s sign is reflected on his face. The disbelievers will be dragged forcefully on their faces towards hellfire. They will be dragged by the Angels of Hellfire who are special angels having no mercy in their hearts. Allah made them this way to obey his commands. The disbelievers will be thrown in Hellfire in different ways. Some will be dragged towards hellfire and others will walk on their faces towards Hellfire. This is why when

Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) and all the messengers are making Daawa to the Kuffar they feel sorry for them. The messengers have mercy in their heart towards the disbelievers and they do not want anything in return. This teaches us that when we call someone to Islam we need to have compassion and mercy for him or her. There is a Hadith of the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) that to save one person from hellfire is better than all the delights of this world.

For the disbelievers to be dragged towards hellfire on their faces is the worst physical torture but apart from this there will also be mental torture for them. Our protection is our righteousness and faith. There is a Hadith of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) that Allah stretches his hand in the night so sinner of the morning can repent and Allah stretches his hand in the day so the sinner of the night can repent. Our duty is to ask forgiveness from Allah.

means “everything” . This includes every creature in heaven and earth, apparent and hidden, big كل شىء and small.

هھ ـ means “ Allah took charge of creating it”. Allah is in charge of initiating the creation of everything and خلقنwhatever Allah creates is the best. Every creation is unique according to what suits the nature.

.”means “measure, estimated بقدرر

This Ayat explains that everything that Allah created is pre-decreed. Allah knows everything about his creation. This tells us about Allah’s perfection and his greatness. Allah pre-decreed everything about a person even before that person was even created. The decree of Allah is one of the biggest signs that we need to believe in. Whatever Allah creates he knows it with the exact measure. Nothing in this life is a coincidence but everything is pre-decreed and whatever Allah decrees is the best. We should accept the decree of Allah in order to be at ease and to focus on our real task, which is to save ourselves from Hellfire and to enter Paradise. This will make us content in life, as everything in life is pre-decreed. Since we don’t know what is decreed for us so we need to accept what we cannot change e.g. how we look but there are certain areas where we have been given a will and where we need to make a decision. This “will” is important for us to choose the way (good or bad). When Allah brings guidance to us do we take it or not? When Allah shows us the way do we take the way of obedience or disobedience? We are accountable if we believe or not. The important decision for which we will be accountable for is if we believe or not, if we obey or disobey. This decision is very important, as our life in the hereafter is based on this. This Ayah makes us to flee to Allah because he is our creator. It also makes us feel content and be grateful to Allah.
