2. 2Pe 1:19-21 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto yedo well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place,until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:THE BATTLE OF BATTLES HAS ALWAYS BEEN, DID GOD REALLYSAY? GEN 3:1That is a prophecy pertaining to the coming of the Lord Jesus; for thatis the point under discussion. There has been considerable diversity ofopinion in regard to the meaning of this passage. Some have supposedthat the apostle, when he says "a more sure word," did not intend tomake any comparison between the miracle of the transfiguration andprophecy, but that he meant to say MERELY THAT THE WORD OFPROPHECY WAS VERY SURE, AND COULD CERTAINLY BERELIED ON. Others have supposed that the meaning is, that THEPROPHECIES WHICH FORETOLD HIS COMING INTO THEWORLD HAVING BEEN CONFIRMED BY THE FACT OF HISADVENT, ARE RENDERED MORE SURE AND UNDOUBTEDTHAN WHEN THEY WERE UTTERED, AND MAY NOW BECONFIDENTLY APPEALED TO. So Rosenmuller, Benson,Macknight, Clarke, Wetstein, and Grotius. 3. Luther renders it, "we have a firmprophetic word;" omitting thecomparison. A literal translation ofthe passage would be, "and we havethe prophetic word more firm." IF ACOMPARISON IS INTENDED, ITMAY BE EITHER THAT THEPROPHECY WAS MORE SURETHAN THE FABLES REFERREDTO IN 2PE 1:16 4. The thing on which PETER INTENDED TO FIX THE EYEWAS NOT THAT THE PROPHECY WAS A BETTER EVIDENCERESPECTING THE ADVENT OF THE MESSIAH THAN OTHEREVIDENCES, BUT THAT IT WAS A STRONG PROOF WHICHDEMANDED THEIR PARTICULAR ATTENTION, AS BEING OFA FIRM AND DECIDED CHARACTER. THERE CAN BE NODOUBT THAT THE APOSTLE REFERS HERETO WHAT ISCONTAINED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT; FOR, IN 2PE 1:21, HESPEAKS OF THE PROPHECY AS THAT WHICH WAS SPOKEN"IN OLD TIME, BY MEN THAT WERE MOVED BY THE HOLYGHOST." THE POINT TO WHICH THE PROPHECIESRELATED, AND TO WHICH PETER REFERRED, WAS THEGREAT DOCTRINE RESPECTING THE COMING OF THEMESSIAH, EMBRACING ALL THAT PERTAINED TO HISWORK, OR ALL THAT CHRIST DESIGNED TO DO BY HISTWO ADVENTS. 5. THEY HAD HAD ONE ILLUSTRIOUS PROOFRESPECTING HIS ADVENT AS A GLORIOUSSAVIOUR BY HIS TRANSFIGURATION ONTHE MOUNT; AND THE APOSTLE HERE SAYSTHAT THE PROPHECIES ABOUNDED WITHTRUTHS ON THESE POINTS, AND THAT THEYOUGHT TO GIVE EARNEST HEED TO THEDISCLOSURES WHICH THEY MADE, AND TOCOMPARE THEM DILIGENTLY WITH FACTSAS THEY OCCURRED, THAT THEY MIGHT BECONFIRMED MORE AND MORE IN THETRUTH. If, however, as the more obvious sense of this passage seemsto be, and as many suppose to be the correct interpretation, (seeDoddridge, in loc., and Professor Stuart, on the canon of the Old Test., p.329,) it means that the prophecy was more sure, more steadfast, more tobe depended on than even what the three disciples had seen and heard inthe mount of transfiguration, this may be regarded as true in thefollowing respects: 6. MANY PEOPLE DESPISE PROPHECY BUT IN THEMIS CONFINED OUR DESTINY BECAUSE THEY AREEYE-OPENERS(1.) The prophecies are numerous, and by their SUBSTANCE they furnish a stronger proofthan could be afforded by a MERE CONJECTURE OR HAPPENING.(2.) They were recorded, and might be the subject of careful comparison with the eventsas they occurred.(3.) They were written long beforehand, and it could not be urged that the testimonywhich the prophets bore was owing to any illusion on their minds, or to any agreementamong the different writers to impose on the world. Though Peter regarded the testimonywhich he and James and John bore to the glory of the Saviour, from what they saw on theholy mount, as strong and clear confirmation that he was the Son of God, yet a cavillerMAY IGNORANTLY ARGUE that they might have agreed to impose on others, or thatthey might have been dazzled and deceived by some natural phenomenon occurringthere. TO THIS I SAY, IT IS EASY TO TELL THE BLIND THE SUN EXISTS BECAUSE HEFEELS ITS HEAT BUT TO PROVE TO HIM THAT IT PRODUCES LIGHT IT ISSOMEWHAT IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE THE THING IS A PHENOMENA TO HIM.(4.) Even supposing that there was a miracle in the case, the evidence of the prophecies,embracing many points in the same general subject, and extending through a long seriesof years, would be more satisfactory than any single miracle whatever. See Doddridge, inloc. The general meaning is, that the fact that he had come as the Messiah was disclosedin the mount by such a manifestation of his glory, and of what he would be, that they whosaw it could not doubt it; the same thing the apostle says was more fully shown also in theprophecies, and these prophecies demanded their close and prolonged attention. 7. WHEREUNTO YE DO WELLTHAT YE TAKE HEED. THEYARE WORTHY OF YOURSTUDY, OF YOUR CLOSEAND CAREFULINVESTIGATION. THERE ISPERHAPS NO STUDY MOREWORTHY OF THEATTENTION OF CHRISTIANSTHAN THAT OF THEPROPHECIES. 8. WHY SHOULD THEY DRAWOUR ATTENTION SO MUCH?Re 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hearthe words of this prophecy, and keep those thingswhich are written therein: for the time is at hand.SO A BLESSING IS DECREED UPON THOSE WHOSTUDY IT AND KEEP THE THINGS THEREIN. ISIT NOT A COINCIDENCE THAT MANY ARESTRUGGLING IN LIFE FOR BLESSINGS BECAUSETHEY DONT READ AND UNDERSTANDPROPHECY! WHY? BECAUSE WHEN YOU STUDYTHEM, THEY TURN YOU FROM TEMPORAL TOETERNAL THINGS. 9. Prophecy we have been told is a light that shineth in a darkplace. That is, the prophecies resemble a candle, lamp, ortorch, in a dark room, or in an obscure road at night. Theymake objects distinct which were before unseen; theyenable us to behold many things which would be otherwiseinvisible. The object of the apostle in this representationSEEMS to have been, to state that the prophecies do notgive a perfect light, or that they do not remove all obscurity,but that they shed some light on objects which wouldotherwise be entirely dark, and that the light which theyfurnished was so valuable that we ought by all means toendeavour to avail ourselves of it. Until the day shall dawn,and we shall see objects by the clear light of the sun, theyare to be our guide. A lamp is of great value in a dark night;though it may not disclose objects so clearly as the light ofthe sun. But it may be a safe and sure guide; and a manwho has to travel in dark and dangerous places, does "well"to "take heed" to his lamp. 10. Until the day dawn. Until you have the clearer light which shall resultfrom the dawning of the day. The reference here is to the morning light ascompared with a lamp; and the meaning is, that we should attend to thelight furnished by the prophecies until the truth shall be rendered moredistinct by the events as they shall actually be disclosed--until thebrighter light which shall be shed on all things by the glory of the secondadvent of the Saviour, and the clearing up of what is now obscure in thesplendours of the heavenly world. The point of comparison is betweenthe necessary obscurity of prophecy, and the clearness of events whenthey actually occur--a difference like that which is observable in theobjects around us when seen by the shining of the lamp and by the lightof the sun. The apostle directs the mind onward to a period when all shallbe clear--to that glorious time when the Saviour shall return to receive hispeople to himself in that heaven where all shall be light. Comp. Re 21:23-26; 22:5. Meantime, we should avail ourselves of all the light which wehave, and should apply ourselves diligently to the study of the propheciesof the Old Testament which are still unfulfilled, and of those in the NewTestament which direct the mind onward to brighter and more gloriousscenes than this world has yet witnessed. In our darkness they are acheering lamp to guide our feet, till that illustrious day shall dawn. THISGIVES US AN ILLUSTRATION OF FAITH IN HEB 11:1 THATALTHOUGH WE MAY NOT COME TO FULL LIGHT, BUT WESHOULD CONTINUE IN FAITH WAITING FOR IT, 11. And the day-star. The morning star--the bright star that at certain periods ofthe year leads on the day, and which is a pledge that the morning is about todawn.BUT WHO IS THE MORNING BRIGHT OR DAY STAR?Re 2:28; 22:16.When the day approaches the full light arises in your hearts: that is, sheds itsbeams on your hearts. Till you see the indications of that approaching day whichall is light. The period referred to here by the approaching day that is to diffusethis light, is when the Saviour shall return in the full revelation of His glory--thesplendour of His kingdom. Then all will be clear. Till that time, we should searchthe prophetic records, and strengthen our faith, and comfort our hearts, thepredictions of the future glory of his reign. Whether this refers, as some suppose,to his reign on earth, either personally during His first Advent as it in Haggai 2:7-9 or by the principles of his religion universally prevailing as it were in the earlierChurch or the Church just before His second coming, or, as others suppose, tothe brighter revelations of heaven when he shall come to receive his people tohimself, it is equally clear that a brighter time than any that has yet occurred isto dawn on our race, and equally true that we should regard the prophecies, aswe do the morning star, as the cheering harbinger of day. INFERENCE OF REV18:1 IS ALLUDED IN THIS PLACE WHEN WE SHALL COME TO THE FULLKNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST. 12. 2Peter 1:20 KNOWING THIS FIRST, THAT NO PROPHECY OF THESCRIPTURE IS OF ANY PRIVATE INTERPRETATION.BEARING THIS STEADILY IN MIND AS A PRIMARY AND MOSTIMPORTANT TRUTH.That no prophecy of the scripture. No prophecy contained in the inspiredrecords. The word scripture here shows that the apostle referred particularly tothe prophecies recorded in the Old Testament. The remark which he makesabout prophecy is general, though it is designed to bear on a particular class ofthe prophecies.THE TRUTHS WHICH THE PROPHETS COMMUNICATED WERE NOTORIGINATED BY THEMSELVES; WERE NOT OF THEIR OWN SUGGESTIONOR INVENTION; WERE NOT THEIR OWN OPINIONS, BUT WERE OFHIGHER ORIGIN, AND WERE IMPARTED BY GOD; AND ACCORDING TOTHIS THE PASSAGE MAY BE EXPLAINED, "KNOWING THIS AS A POINTOF FIRST IMPORTANCE WHEN YOU APPROACH THE PROPHECIES, ORALWAYS BEARING THIS IN MIND, THAT IT IS A GREAT PRINCIPLE INREGARD TO THE PROPHETS, THAT WHAT THEY COMMUNICATED WASNOT OF THEIR OWN DISCLOSURE; THAT IS, WAS NOT REVEALED ORORIGINATED BY THEM." THAT THIS IS THE CORRECT INTERPRETATIONWILL BE APPARENT FROM THE FOLLOWING CONSIDERATIONS: 13. What is the rule when reading the Bible?Isaiah 28:9, 10Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall hemake to understand doctrine? them that are weanedfrom the milk, and drawn from the breasts. Forprecept must be upon precept, precept upon precept;line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there alittle:2Timothy 3:16, 17All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and isprofitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, forinstruction in righteousness: That the man of Godmay be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all goodworks. 14. No prophecy recorded in the Scripture is of,or comes from, any exposition or disclosureof the will and purposes of God by theprophets themselves." It is not a thing oftheir own, or a private matter originatingwith themselves, but it is to be traced to aHigher Source. If this be the trueinterpretation, then it follows that theprophecies are to be regarded as of higherthan any human origin: FOR ITS ONLYAN INFINITE MIND THAT COME UPWITH SUCH SPECIFIC, ACCURATE ANDPRECISE FORETHOUGHTS. 15. 2Peter 1:21 FOR THE PROPHECY CAME NOT IN OLDTIME BY THE WILL OF MAN: BUT HOLY MEN OF GODSPAKE AS THEY WERE MOVED BY THE HOLY GHOST.The Greek word (pote) will bear either construction. It wouldbe true in either sense, but the reference is particularly to therecorded prophecies in the Old Testament. What was true ofthem, however, is true of all prophecy, that it is not by the willof man. The word prophecy here is without the article,meaning prophecy in general--all that is prophetic in the OldTestament; or, in a more general sense still, all that theprophets taught, whether relating to future events or not. Itwas not of human origin; not discovered by the human mind.The word will, here seems to be used in the sense ofprompting or suggestion; men did not speak by their ownsuggestion, but as truth was brought to them by God. Piousmen commissioned by God, or employed by him as hismessengers to mankind. 16. The Greek phrase here (upo pneumatov agiou feromenoi)means borne along, moved, influenced by the Holy Ghost.The idea is, that in what they spake they were carried alongby an influence from above. They moved in the case only asthey were moved; they spake only as the influence of theHoly Ghost was upon them. They were no more self-movedthan a vessel at sea is that is impelled by the wind; and asthe progress made by the vessel is to be measured by theimpulse bearing upon it, so the statements made by theprophets are to be traced to the impulse which bore upontheir minds. They were not, indeed, in all respects like sucha vessel, but only in regard to the fact that all they said asprophets was to be traced to the foreign influence that boreupon their minds. The point with reference to which hemakes this observation is abundantly confirmed, that theprophecies demand our earnest attention, and that weshould give all the heed to them which we would to a lightor lamp when travelling in a dangerous way, and in a darknight. In a still more general sense, the remark here mademay also be applied to the whole of the Scriptures. 17. Literally, We are in a dark world. We seefew things clearly; and all around us, on athousand questions, there is the obscurityof midnight. By nature there is nothing tocast light on those questions, and we areperplexed, bewildered, embarrassed. Inthe word of God is full assurance of wherewe are headed and making it our Driverand Companion casts out the darknessthat seems to obscure us seeing events intheir true nature. 18. The Bible is given to us to shed light on our way. It isthe only light which we have in respect of the future,it gives us sufficient light to guide us to heaven. Itteaches us what it is necessary to know about God,about our duty, and about the way of salvation, inorder to conduct ourselves safely; and no one who hascommitted himself to its direction, has been sufferedto wander finally away from the paths of salvation. Itis, therefore, a duty to attend to the instructionswhich the Bible imparts, and to commit ourselves toits holy guidance in our journey to a better world: forsoon, if we are faithful to its teachings, the light ofeternity will dawn upon us, and there, amidst itscloudless splendour, we shall see as we are seen, andknow as we are known; then we shall "need no candle,because full light shall be in our midst. Comp. Re21:22-24; 22:5. 19. 1Co 13:9, 10 For we knowin part, and weprophesy in part. Butwhen that which isperfect is come, thenthat which is in partshall be done away.
