Zack Blackmon III visitsEng and Chang Bunkermemorial in Thailand

While on a recent business trip in June to Thailand, Zach Blackmon III had an oppor-tunity to visit the Eng and Chang Memorial.

The memorial is located about an hour southwest of Bangkok near the banks of theMekong River where the twins were born and spent the early years of their conjoinedlife.

Unveiled in 1994, the monument was cast in bronze donated by fishermen and builtwith donations from people in their hometown. Around the base of the memorial, scenesdepicting Eng and Chang’s life in Mount Airy can be seen. Zack’s great, great, great-grandfather was Eng Bunker, one of the Siamese Twins.

John Morgan Bert Cockerham was pre-sented his Eagle Scout Award at GraceMoravian Church on June 7. The ceremo-ny was led by John Morgan’s formerScoutmaster, Danny Ledford, with the as-sistance of troop committee ChairmanRay Lambert and the Rev. Tony Hay-worth. Family, friends, church family andTroop 596 were invited to celebrate his ac-complishment.

John Morgan was honored with a re-ception in the fellowship hall followingthe church service.

John Morgan’s project involved theplanning and implementation of three mu-rals in Grace Moravian Church. Thesemurals are located in children SundaySchool class rooms. They represent threestories from the Bible including, Noah’sArk, Jonah and the Whale and David andGoliath. These murals have served bothaesthetic and educational purposes.

As John Morgan advanced throughscouting, he was taught, tested and re-viewed at every rank along the way bypeers and scout leaders. He has spentmany hours at Camp Raven Knob, learn-ing and experiencing the best scouting thathas provided him with many memoriessure to last a lifetime. Scouting is a familytradition. John Morgan’s grandpa, LesterPerry (Mickey) McCall was a scoutmasterfor 10 years in Troop 505. His uncle,Charles Fredrick McCall, was also an Ea-gle Scout.

The awarding of the Eagle Badge is animportant and serious occasion, the climaxand the goal for which a scout works manyyears, an occasion for pride and joy, a timefor serious contemplation. This ceremonyis a culmination of the efforts of thesescouts and the various leaders they haveworked with over the years. The Eagle isthe highest and most coveted rank in scout-ing, the last major step in the advancementprogram. Fewer than four percent of allScouts in the U.S. reach Eagle rank.

John Morgan is the son of John andTina Cockerham. and the grandson ofMaurine McCall and Margaretha Bullen. He graduated from Mount Airy HighSchool on June 13, and will attend theUniversity of North Carolina at ChapelHill this fall.

One-third of the Earth’s surface is land. And almost all of it is fair game for the Kubota RTVs.That’s because this durable line of util-ity vehicles was built in the solid tradition of any Kubota machine; to work harder, last longer and to take whatever is dished out. This tougher-than-nails lineup includes our new four-seat RTV1140CPX, the all-weather RTV1100 and its premium grand cab, and the diverse RTV900 series. All of these machines boast innovative features designed to help you work more effi ciently and comfortably, like 3-range VHT Plus, powerful Kubota engines, wet-disc brakes and spacious cargo beds. Simply put, the Kubota RTVs are some of the most versatile and hardest working machines on Earth.

By Anne-Marie ThompsonThe Great Treasure Hunt STAFF WRITER

The Treasure Hunters will be set up at the Hampton Inn & Suites, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday - Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(Paid Advertisement)

The Famous “Roadshow” Comes To Mount Airy This WeekCash in your attic? This week visitors will “cash in” on antiques, gold, silver, coins, and collectibles - many in for a surprise!

Could thousands of dollars be collecting dust in your closet or attic? Bring your valuables on down to the Great Treasure Hunt Antique and Collectible Roadshow in Mount Airy and leave with cash in hand! The Treasure Hunters are located at the Hampton Inn & Suites from Tuesday until Saturday to pump money back into the rapidly declining economy.

With unemployment reaching 11.1% in North Carolina, there is no doubt that Mount Airy locals are in need of fast cash. The Treasure Hunters will make an offer for anything of value, so come down to the Hampton Inn & Suites for a free appraisal.

“We will sort through boxes of collectibles and bags of coins and jewelry if you let us, “says Treasure Hunter Kenny Davis, but that is not all they buy. They have purchased anything from comic books and tin toys to basketball jerseys and rare vintage guitars.

The easiest way to know what coins are of value, the Treasure Hunters

explain, is to look at the date. U.S. coins made before 1965 are valuable because of their high silver content, and they can be worth more if they happen to be a rare date.

The Treasure Hunters can test precious metals on site, as well. If there is any doubt of the carat content, the experts will be able to find out within minutes. They will buy broken chains, earring studs, diamonds, class rings, and much, much more. Nothing is too big or too small.

Judy came in yesterday to sell her old jewelry. “I can’t believe I almost threw my broken chains away!” she said. “I’m so glad I checked [the Roadshow] out!”

Scrap gold and coins are the most common items they buy, but there have been some interesting finds. Just recently someone came in with an African soul washer. After a quick call to verify the value, the Treasure Hunters made a hefty offer and a happy exchange. Some other purchased treasures include a baseball jersey belonging to St.

“Every person out there has something we would have interest in”- Roadshow member Mike Wescott

Louis Cardinals first baseman Stan Musial, the estate of late baseball Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, and a certified 3-carat diamond engagement ring.

While the Treasure Hunters cannot purchase everything brought in, they welcome anyone and everyone to come by with their items.

The Treasure Hunters will be set up at the Hampton Inn &

Suites, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday - Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., so stop by for a free appraisal. For more information visit their website:WeBuyTreasure.com.

Do You have CA$H Hidden in your Basement

or Attic?

How It WorksAfter just a few moments you will be

asked to come and have a seat at a table with one of our Treasure Hunters. In order to expedite the process, we ask that you place all your items on the table in front of you so that we may easily see them. If you have coins, please separate them into denominations. By doing this, you will assist in making the process smoother. Our Treasure Hunters will divide your items into two categories:

1. Items we would like to purchase.

2. Items we are not interested in

purchasing. This does not mean that these items do not have value, but they simply are not in demand in our network of collectors. Once the items are separated, we will make an offer on the items we are interested in purchasing. This offer is based on the current market value. We use a number of resources to obtain this price, including results of recently completed auctions. If you have a certain price in mind for your items, please do not hesitate to tell our associates. This information could help to make a deal rather than lose one. Should you choose to accept our offer, we will give you a prompt cash payment.
