BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
As part of our ongoing development work the section for Elite and National teams
within the Swedish Badminton Association decided to make analyses how other
countries are managing and running their U19 National activities. Some of the key
questions of special interest were
Objectives
Organization and selection criteria
Centralized Vs Decentralized training environment
Mandatory Vs Voluntary
Specialization in category, who decide pairings etc
How training is organization in a typical week

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
There is a clear pattern that ”the larger associations” have more structure, policies and
centralization.
The smaller countries are more flexible and take a more individualized approach.
For a clear majority U19 is about preparing the players for senior level, some have very
clear results objectives some don't.
It is a big difference in weekly training hours between the primarily the Asian countries
and the rest.
Quite some mix between countries related to badminton vs other (physical etc) training
hour per week.

A1 – WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN OBJECTIVES
WITH THE U19 NATIONAL TEAM?
The most common main objective is to prepare
the players for senior level.
Secondly is Result objectives at World Junior
Championships and European Championships
(or equivalent)
Other objectives are more linked to gaining
international experience, individual skills and
personal development, all part of “preparing
for senior level”
RECOMMENDATION: Be more specific around
what we mean with prepare for senior level like
physical test results, self independence,
technical and tactical.

A2 – HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYEED
LINKED TO THE U19 NATIONAL TEAM?
Here we can see a very big difference
between the countries varying from 0 to
11 FTE (Full Time Employee).
It is also a bit complex as some countries
has more people employed at regional
centers and as part of special school
programmes.
RECOMMENDATION: We har far behind
when it comes to people working with
U19, increase to min 25% and closer link to
RIG ansvariga

A3 – HOW MANY PLAYERS DO YOU HAVE
IN THE U19 NATIONAL TEAM?
Here we can see large difference
between the countries varying from 6
to 40 players.
The Asian countries have much larger
teams, based on more players at high
standard.
RECOMMENDATION: In line with most European countries, can not
compare with Asian countries. No
specific action.

A4 – WHAT ARE YOUR KEY SELECTION
CRITERIA FOR THE U19 NATIONAL TEAM?
All countries have Results as main criteria for U19.
Large majority has physical ability as a key criteria , likely linked to the objective of foster players that cope well at senior level.
50% has future potential as criteria.
Only 1 country has Mental strength as a key selection criteria, which is interesting.
RECOMMENDATION: Increase weight of physical ability, learning ability and add mental strength.

A5 – DO YOU HAVE A FIXED SET OF NUMBER OF
PLAYERS (FOR EXAMPLE 5 BOYS AND 5 GIRLS) YOU
NOMINATE OR IS IT MORE CRITERIA BASED??
All countries but one have a criteria
based model rather than a fixed set
of team members.
The only exception is world no 1
Indonesia, likely due to the fact that
they have a very large pool of strong
players.
RECOMMENDATION: A criteria based
model, if we do not have enough
that meets the criteria we should not
include.
11
Fixed number of players or criteria based
No criteria based Yes
A6– HOW MANY OF THESE ARE TRAINING DAILY
IN A CENTER MANAGED BY YOUR
ASSOCIATION?
Half of the countries has around 75%
of all players in a center.
2 countries does not have any players in a national center
RECOMMENDATION: We are in line
with peers, continue to work hard for
that our best players are at RIG.

A7 – IS IT MANDATORY TO BE IN THE CENTER?
For 4 countries it is mandatory to be in
the center and for 3 not.
RECOMMENDATION: We should not make it mandatory but continue

to be there.

Is it mandatory to be in a national centre?
A8 – HOW DO YOU COOPERATE WITH PLAYERS
AND THEIR CLUBS/TRAINERS FOR PLAYERS IN THE
CENTRE AND NOT IN THE NATIONAL CENTRE?
1 country has all players in the national center so question not applicable
For the other countries regular contacts and training camps is the common approach.
Only one country has a contractual agreement with players not in the national center.
RECOMMENDATION: This is a clear area of improvement (project identified), also invite the players trainers/coaches to training camps etc.

B1 – HOW MUCH ARE THE PLAYERS
PRACTICING? ARE THERE CLEAR GUIDELINES
AND REQUIREMENTS FROM THE ASSOCIATION?
Clear majority has clear guidelines
around training structure
There is a big difference in training hours between the Asian and other
countries.
RECOMMENDATION: We are in the
lower third in terms of hours, on the other hand we have frequent injuries,
we need to be more clear in terms of
guidelines for U15/U17 so that they
are fit enough for U19/RIG

B3 – DO YOUR PLAYERS WORK WITH A SPORTS
PSYCHOLOGIST?
50% of the countries do work with a
sports psychologist.
RECOMMENDATION: We should look in to this more, what can be done at
RIG, SOK and Förbundet.

C1 – ARE THERE PLAYERS THAT PLAY BOTH
SINGLES AND OR DOUBLE/MIXED?
In 5 of 8 countries there are U19
players that play both singles and
doubles/mixed.
RECOMMENDATION: We should not
have a too early specialization, there
are on a path of becoming
“badmintonplayers”. Key decision is when starting at Eurocenter, to be in
singles or d/m group.

Are there players that play both singles and or
double/mixed?
C2 – IF NOT AT WHAT AGE DO YOU MAKE THE
PLAYERS CHOOSE BETWEEN SINGLE OR D/M?
The countries that make players choose between singles and
doubles/mixed do that around 17 years.
“we choose with them at 16-17 . If they and we are not sure 100% they go to single center and we can switch them after if needed to double.”
“Some players are obviously better at some disciplines than others and
their training starts to specialize on those skills. However, I encourage all
players to continue in all disciplines until senior level as I believe they will develop different skills and game craft that will help them become more
rounded players.”
19
C3 – DOES THE ASSOCIATION DECIDE
PAIRINGS?
In 4 countries the association decide
pairings, for 3 they decide at times for
championships.
RECOMMENDATION: For
championships we should decide, we
can also improve how to facilitate
pairings as this is random and club/parent driven to large extent.

C4 – WHO IS MANAGING THE PLAYERS
CALENDARS (U19 VS SENIOR, LEAGUE MATCHES ETC?
For half of the countries (the ones with
national center) the national coach
decides the players calendars.
For the other half it is the individual
players coach.
RECOMMENDATION: Should be a joint
exercise between förbund and klubb/RIG. Many players are playing
the “wrong” tournaments, too high
level and chasing ranking.
21
Who is managing the players calendars (U19 vs
Senior, league matches etc?

C5 – WHO IS FUNDING THE PLAYERS
TOURNAMENTS?
For half of the countries it is a mixed
situation where the association and
the players clubs/parents fund the tournaments.
In 2 countries it is fully funded by the
association and in 2 self funded.
RECOMMENDATION: Have a more differentiated funding within the
group, can go to different
tournaments based on level.
