The Melbourne Metropolitan Cricket - Club and Player surveys were designed to provide an insight into the key issues and areas of focus for the Melbourne Metropolitan Cricket Steering Committee and Collaborative Groups of the relevant geographical zones.

A total of 2,682 (119 - Club, 2563 - Player) responses were received from the 23,749 surveys which were sent via email using the Survey Monkey online system. Whilst the sample size of club responses is only 24%, the data received still provides us with good insight into the issues, challenges and needs of community clubs across Melbourne.

The clubs and players identified the following as key challenges for community cricket:

• Recruiting and retaining players and volunteers

• Competition from other sports and lifestyle choices

• Club Management (Skills, Time, People, etc.)

• Cost of running clubs

• Access and Quality of Coaches and Umpires

• Cost of playing

• Time commitments for training and playing

Unified rules across all metropolitan competitions was deemed to be a beneficial solution by both clubs and players.

Whilst most clubs already have a good relationship with their local government authority, there is an overwhelming support for Cricket Victoria taking a lead and advocating on behalf of clubs with local government issues.

These survey results will be used to guide the Collaborative Groups for each geographical zone in designing a model for cricket which supports the needs of the local community and provides a benefit for the sport.

Objective & Background

As part of the 'Melbourne Metropolitan Cricket - A Strategy to Embrace a Changing Game', Cricket Victoria in partnership with the Steering Committee sought feedback from all metropolitan based clubs and players to gain a greater understanding of key issues they experience through their involvement in the game. The results would be shared with the Melbourne Metropolitan Cricket Steering Committee and the nominated Collaborative Groups within each geographical zone to assist in the development of a proposed model for cricket for that zone.

Page 3: SURVEY RESULTS - Cricket Victoria...These survey results will be used to guide the Collaborative Groups for each geographical zone in designing a model for cricket which supports the

Methodology

The survey questions were designed by the Melbourne Metropolitan Cricket Steering Committee to ensure complete coverage of the areas/issues of interest for all of cricket (Junior, Senior, Veteran, Female, Turf & Synthetic).

For ease of completion and data collection, the website Survey Monkey was used to distribute the survey. The survey was conducted from Monday 22 January 2018 until Sunday 11 February 2018 and sent via email to the designated address listed in the MyCricket administration system for that club/player.

Out of 503 clubs, we received 119 responses (24%) and from the 23,246 players, we received 2,563 responses (11%).

A total of 16 questions were asked in both the Club and Player surveys, including multiple-choice, matrix/rating scales, single text box, checkbox, dropdown and ranking scale questions. Open comment field were also provided for a few questions and a general open comment field was included at the end of the survey.

The questions focused on four key areas for the respondent: - their background;- their local club;- their local competition; &- general cricket focus.

Survey Results

A summary of the survey results can be found in the follow pages and have been presented with a metropolitan-wide analysis followed by each individual geographic zone with both club and player data.

The rating scales were developed with a score attributed to the individual responses as shown below.
