Introduction

AirMagnet Survey is a powerful and easy-to-use survey tool that provides WLAN professionals with everything they need to perform scientifically accurate site surveys of any 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless network. These Release Notes cover all key features that have been added in this AirMagnet Survey 8.2 release (build 25408) as well as some known issues.

Special Notes

When using any of the USB wireless adapters, wireless profiles may need to be re-created when the adapter is plugged into a different USB port—as profiles are stored based on the port, not the adapter itself.

When installing the new Intel® and USB adapters, it is important that users uncheck the option to install the adapter‘s client utility in addition to the driver software.

In order to run AirMagnet Survey on Windows® Vista™ or Windows® 7 using a USB abgn adapter you must install the USB abgn adapter using the USB abgn Vista-Win7 Installer.exe found at https://www.airmagnet.com/my_airmagnet/public/documents/#3rdpartydriver.

User may see an error in Cisco WCS when importing a Cisco WCS Planner project which uses a CAD image. Please refer to the Cisco WCS Version 7.0 MR1 Release Note for the workaround.

Recommended drivers for certain 3rd party vendor adapters are available at https://www.airmagnet.com/my_airmagnet/public/documents/#3rdpartydriver (link accessible after logging into a valid MyAirMagnet account).

Ruckus Wireless recommends the use of active surveys within the AirMagnet Survey product while deploying their APs.

The user should configure the Roaming Control (Signal) feature when using the USB abgn adapters to perform a site survey by SSID.

The ―Delay‖ option for 1000 msec in Active Survey mode is not supported in this release.

In order to test roaming during an active survey, the user should set the Windows Wireless Profile to Automatically Connect and the other profiles to Manually Connect. Otherwise, Windows may activate the other profiles when the Roaming feature is enabled.

The 802.11n-specific portions of the Reports screen (e.g., Operating Mode, 20/40 data, etc.) are based on individual APs and will only be displayed on the Overall Coverage by AP and Per AP reports.

Integration with Virtual Earth requires Internet Explorer 7 (or higher) to be installed on the Survey machine. (21655)

APs placed on Survey‘s Display screen are ‗display-only‘ by default. Consequently, users will be unable to modify the AP power settings for APs placed on the Simulation screen. (22431)

Users running AirMagnet Survey on Windows Vista must have administrative rights in order to use the application.

Removing an active external WiFi adapter while running AirMagnet Survey may cause the application to become unstable.

Microsoft Virtual Earth is now Bing Maps. As a result, the map option for creating a GPS-Aided AirMagnet Survey project using Microsoft Virtual Earth has been changed to using Microsoft Bing.

AirMagnet Survey now supports Cisco Prime NCS integration in addition to our existing support for Cisco WCS integration. Users can create and export planner projects directly into Cisco Prime NCS as well as export real-world survey data to Cisco Prime NCS.

AirMagnet Survey PRO and OptiView XG can simultaneously use Wi-Fi 1 for linked operations. When running Survey PRO active tests, it is recommended that you discontinue OptiView XG use of the adapter to avoid skewing of those test results.

Each of the two Wi-Fi adapters has a single link status indicator. The LED illuminates when the Wi-Fi adapter is in use. The LED‘s color indicates the link speed (or that the Wi-Fi adapter is in use by an AirMagnet application). The LED flashes to indicate traffic is present on the link. See Table 1.

Color Link Speed Standard

Green Up to 11 Mbps 802.11b

Blue Up to 54 Mbps 802.11a/g

White Up to 300 Mbps 802.11n, with one or two spacial streams

Magenta 350 Mbps or more 802.11n, with three spatial streams (3x3)

Amber Wi-Fi adapter is in use by an AirMagnet application

Table 1: Wi-Fi Indicator Color Link Speed Standard

The user interface has been resized for OptiView XG screen resolution for improved usability.

Note: When viewing the Survey and Display views, some map view control buttons may not be visible on the OptiView display. These include Overlap, Overall, Per Channel and 3D. To access these controls, select the desired option from the View menu.

Many AirMagnet Survey PRO views support drag-and-drop. On the OptiView XG platform, the screens may scroll rather than move the icon. This occurs when the screen is zoomed and scrollbars are present. To disable single-finger panning, which is the function that controls this behavior, take the following steps:

1. Open Windows Control Panel

2. Open ―Pen and Touch‖

3. Select the ―Panning‖ tab

4. Uncheck ―Turn on Single Finger Panning‖

1. Enhanced the algorithm to help in recalculation of Heat Map on the simulation screen. (30845)

2. Corrected the issue where half the floor plan map was cut off in a report (30379).

3. Fixed the issue that caused the AirMagnet Survey software to crash when saving a simulation to the same existing simulation name. (30151)

4. Fixed the issue with the simulation tool where 5GHz APs are listed in 2.4GHz tab. (29538)

5. Corrected the issue where "Alias Name" was not included in the filtered data file. (30857)

6. Fixed the issue where AP power reset to 100 mWatt when creating a filtered data file. (30856)

7. Fixed the issue wherein the Simulation Data Allocation tab was not getting updated after adding AP. (30465)

8. Resolved the issue wherein Build #22442 broke the ability to detect ad-hoc devices during a passive survey. (30878)

9. Fixed the issues related to the image, site map and graph getting cut off in custom survey report. (30524)

10. Fixed the issue wherein the Individual Signal Distribution in a custom AirMagnet Survey report was showing duplicated images. (30477)

11. Fixed the AP Grouping issue where a newly added "OUI" didn't show up until after the application was relaunched. (30468)

Page 9: Surveyor Release Notes

Page 9 of 11 AirMagnet Survey PRO 8.2 Release Notes

SVY-v82-25408-RLN-01-090711

12. Resolved the issue wherein some active Surveys created using the ―AP on a stick‖ method did not show all the AP locations once multiple surveys where merged. (30338)

13. Fixed the issue which caused the Color legend changes to not appear in Reports. (30118)

14. Fixed the AutoCad DWG margin issue with non-U.S operating systems. This issue caused the importing of some DWG floor plans to shift the coverage heat map when overlaying on the FloorPlan. (30493)

Known Issues

This section documents some known issues with AirMagnet Survey 8.2.

1. Novell client may interfere with the softload process when launching AirMagnet Survey and cause it to fail. To resolve this, disable Novell Client. (11339)

2. Attempting to view 2nd and 3rd level heat maps (such as 2nd or 3rd Sig. Coverage) on projects where there are no secondary or tertiary data may cause primary heat maps to disappear. Closing and reopening the project will restore the data display. (15950)

3. Survey may close unexpectedly if the computer enters Standby mode while Survey is active. (18131)

4. Users may still experience roaming when conducting an active survey against a specific AP. (19712)

5. Using Diff View to compare noise levels for two survey files should display green regions for areas with less noise; currently, the heat map may appear inverted (red for lower noise, green for higher). (20109)

6. Users cannot export reports with capital letters in the filename. (20260)

7. Data type selections made in the ‗Before‘ portion of the Simulation screen may not be reflected properly in the ‗After‘ pane. (20401)

8. When using the Single Project Multi View feature, the data type selections for all views may reflect those of the most recently loaded survey data file (i.e., loading a passive survey in pane 1 and an active in pane 2 may result in the passive pane allowing the user to attempt to display active data). (20486)

9. Survey data files that contain spectrum information may not display correctly immediately after loading. To view spectrum data, uncheck and recheck the survey path. (20521)

10. When importing a new project into the Single Project Multi View feature, the screen may refresh several times before the user is able to click anywhere in the application. (20528)

11. Attempting to compare PHY Data Rate (Down) data using the Diff View feature may compare Signal strength between the two surveys instead. (20859)

12. Merged filenames cannot be longer than 64 characters. (21804)

Page 10: Surveyor Release Notes

Page 10 of 11 AirMagnet Survey PRO 8.2 Release Notes

SVY-v82-25408-RLN-01-090711

13. During installation, all existing AirWISE policies are set to read-only, including user-defined files, after which the Survey application cannot remove them. To work around this, manually delete the files from the AirMagnet Survey\RequirementPolicy directory. (21834)

14. The Roaming Success message window may appear when first starting a VoFi survey even though the phone has not roamed yet. (22918)

15. When first starting a VoFi survey, the SSID list may initially be populated with AP names until the SSIDs are detected. (22988)

16. When using the Locate Station feature, some stations may appear with incorrect signal level listings. (25399)

17. When any of the USB a/b/g/n network adapters are used, the Site Survey tool may not calculate loss. (25842)

18. Users may see a ―no email program present‖ error when attempting to export a custom report for the first time. The export process works after ignoring the error message and re-attempting. (28080)

19. The application may default to ―Ad-Hoc‖ mode in the 802.11 tab of the configuration menu upon first launch. (28258)

20. Data may not display in 3D in Windows 7 64-bit. (28637)

21. Range indicator may sometimes be black in color. (28732)

22. In certain cases, the Cisco Prime NCS/WCS may show the incorrect floor plan. The workaround for this is to remove the generated jpg files (rm -f <WCS DIR>/webnms/webacs/images/domainmaps/*_f.jpg)

23. With certain WCS CAD images, zooming in may cause details to disappear. (29604)

24. When using the Export to CAD feature, newer AutoCAD images may not export. (29660)

25. When performing an Active or Active Iperf survey to a Meru Virtual Port or Virtual Cell AP, the MAC address displayed will be the virtual BSSID. (31317)
