ESN welcomes you to Trento! Trento is a small town in the middle of the
Italian Alps. Coming from a Roman, Medieval
and Germanic heritage, it's a town with
beautiful architecture and with a rich
cultural and historical background.
Given the well-organized university
structure, Trento is quickly becoming a
popular student town. Student sign-ups are
booming, and in some faculties growing 30%
every year. This has had positive effects on
the city life as well. Had you come to Trento
four years ago, there would have been only
one bar offering happy hour, which would
then close around 22.30. Now, however, you
can easily find one happy hour per night in
various bars, not to mention bars where you
can have big discounts with an ESN Card.
The regional territory is unique, offering
great landscapes, outdoor activities in the
mountains, rivers and lakes, as well as being
a great skiing destination in the winter. The
cost and quality of life in the city is
constantly at the top of the Italian charts.
Eight faculties, four canteens, free sporting
areas, various study halls and libraries cater
to the needs of UniTN students.
In this context, ESN Trento (Erasmus Student
Network) acts as a reference point for
incoming international students, providing a
tutor service (in collaboration with the LLP-
Erasmus office), organizing events to favor
the integration of foreign and local students
(tandem café), events on the weekends,
trips to nearby cities, offering a hand in
sometimes complicated bureaucratic issues,
and trying to provide you with the best
Erasmus experience of your life.
To find out everything about the things just
mentioned and much, much more please
read the following survival guide, which ESN
Trento has worked hard to prepare.
Good luck and welcome to Trento!

Life in Trento Trentino-Alto Adige
Trento is the provincial capital of the
province of Trentino. Along with Bolzano,
capital of the province of Alto Adige-Sud
Tyrol, they forms the main city centers of
the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto
Adige.
The region is characterized by strong
linguistic and ethnical differences. The
province of Bolzano or Bozen, is comprised
of a German speaking majority, given it’s
strong historical ties with the Austrian
Empire, though most people know Italian
almost as well, if not as well as German.
In various valleys you can find Ladin speaking
communities. Ladin is a Latin derived
language with influences of Italian and
German, but it comprises it’s own linguistic
group; they even have a daily 15 minute
news program in the language.
Territory
The territory is prevalently characterized by
mountains (from the Alps to the Dolomites),
broken by valleys, rivers and lakes which
offer some of the most fantastic natural
habitats in Italy. The Dolomites, giant pieces
of stone jutting out from the Alps, have
recently been nominated as natural heritage
by the UNESCO. Below “Pale di San Martino”.
Hundreds of hikes an climbs are available
and during the winter the region becomes
the destination for thousands of skiers.
There are also many lakes and rivers, like
the Lago di Garda (biggest in Italy), Lago di
Caldonazzo (closest to Trento) and other
smaller but not less beautiful lakes. The
Adige river crosses through the city and
heads for Verona and the Noce river in the
Val di Sole will host our rafting event in May.
!
Living and eating in Trento
Trento is not what you would call a lively
city, but as more and more students pour
into the city bar and pub owners have
started picking up the pace. We don’t doubt
that you will always find something to do.
The cost of life is medium (slightly growing).
You can find private rooms from 180-250
Euros but also up to 300 Euros a month. If
you eat out often food prices are pretty
standard, 1.50-2.00 Euros for a slice of
pizza, 2.00-3.00 Euros for sandwiches. With
the student card you can get a full meal at
the canteen for 3.50 or smaller plates for
2.20. If you are out for aperitif you can
expect about 2.50 for Spritz and 3.00 for a
medium beer (out of happy hour). There are
a few supermarkets in the center of town,
but also various discount supermarkets a
little farther out. You can take a bus or an
Ecomobile to go shopping there and save
some money. There are a few restaurants
which are affordable even for students (like
Pedavena or Rosa D’Oro) and pizzerie or
restaurants like Grotta which have huge
portions of pasta or pizza (very popular
Erasmus destination). As for fast food, there
is a McDonalds to the south of the city and
not much else. There are various kebab
parlors and Chinese restaurants to choose
from, as well as a couple of Indian
restaurants (bit more expensive). As you will
see in the discount page at the end, there
are also some pizzerie and bars where you
can have discounts with your ESN Card.
Shopping
If you need to do some shopping for stuff,
there are some larger shopping centers
towards the north and south of the city. You
will have to take a bus or bike there (but
don’t expect too much). On Thursdays
though, there is the town market, where you
can find all sorts of useful things
(clothes/sheets/shoes/food) for a lower
price.
Smoking
In Italy there is no smoking in covered public
places. You can buy cigarettes or tobacco
packs in any tabaccheria or in automatic
distributors, where you will need your codice
fiscale. Tabaccherie are general stores and
you can tell which they are by the big T
outside the store.
!
ESN Trento: who we are and what we do... useful information We are ESN Trento, and we have created this
guide in the hopes of making your arrival and
stay in Trento a bit easier.
ESN (Erasmus Student Network) is an
international student association, which
promotes European integration and mobility
at a university level. It is mainly addressed
to Erasmus students but it's not limited to
them, so you will find a variety of students
and not students from different
backgrounds.
With more than 500 members from 67
nationalities in 2010-2011, joining ESN gives
you the chance to meet new people and
create long lasting friendships.
As far as activities go, ESN Trento has a wide
variety of offers: for sporting or outdoor
events we regularly go ice skating, walking in
the nearby mountains, catch some sun by the
lake and we dedicate a whole 4 days to a
skiing/snowboarding event (ESNow) in March
and a weekend of rafting in May. We also
host a good assortment of cultural activities
like Tandem Café, where you will have a
good chance to speak different languages,
wine tasting and visits to local museums.
Party life is never missing. We also organize
trips to nearby cities, like Venice, Verona,
Padova, Innsbruck, Bologna, and Mantova, so
it's a good chance to visit them together with
friends.
!
To participate in all these activities you are
required to have an ESN card. The ESN card
costs 5 Euros and gives you access to our
activities, as well as discounts in some local
bars and stores. You can find all the details
on our website. The ESN card is valid from
September to August and can be used in any
section in Europe, so you can use it when you
travel to cities like Padova or Innsbruck for
example, to know the discounts take a look
at those sections' websites.

for you.
When pre-registering you will be given the
option of receiving our newsletter by email.
We highly recommend that you do to know
all of the activities that we will do. You will

into your spam folder. We will also be
contacting you through our Facebook group
(ESN Trento 11-12). Join us to keep up to
date and keep in touch will all the other
international students.
In the following pages you will be provided
with useful information relative to your pre-
arrival period, arrival and stay in Trento.
!
Visiting your faculty Once you have settled in you may want to
take a look at your faculty. The faculties of
Sociology, Law, Economics, International
Studies, Arts and Humanities and Local
Development are all located in the center of
Trento and you can see them on our map.
Four major canteens are available for these
faculties in the center, and you can see
them on our map as well and check out the
times here.
The faculties of Sciences and Engineering,
are respectively in Povo and Mesiano, two
small centers on the hill on top of Trento.
You can reach them with bus number 5 and
9, or with the Valsugana train, from the
central station or San Bartolameo, which
stops in Povo. Both these faculties have
canteens on campus.
The faculty of Cognitive Sciences is in
Rovereto, about 15 km from Trento,
reachable by bus or by train.
The main things you will want to remember
are the computer rooms, study halls and
break rooms. You will also want to look for
your Erasmus faculty coordinator to sign off
your learning agreement.
During the welcome week we also take you
for a tour of the city center and show some
of the most important landmarks in Trento.
!The University is composed of:
• Faculty of Economics (Trento) • Faculty of Law (Trento) • Faculty of Sociology (Trento) • Faculty of Arts & Humanities (Trento) • Faculty of Engineering (Mesiano) • Faculty of Sciences (Povo) • Faculty of Cognitive Science
(Rovereto) • School on Local Development (Trento) • School of International Studies
(Trento)

!
Other university stuff Student Card
First of all, you have to apply for the student
card on the Opera Universitaria website.
Then you have to go to the counter of
InfoMensa (via Prati, 10) with your
matriculation number, they take you a
picture and the card is ready. Remember
that it is like a student identity card and
without it you cannot go to the canteen.
Study Rooms
You can find an study rooms (aule studio) in
each faculty. A map at the entrance of the
building will show you where these rooms
are. They are open the whole day like the
faculty. Moreover, you can study at CIAL (Via
Verdi, 8). Here you have the possibility to
access the net with your own laptop and
obviously you have to be as silent as
possible.
Libraries
There is a library in each faculty of the
University. Here you can search for your
book in an up-to-date database. Here you
can find all the information about it that you
have to write down on the specific paper.
You can consult the book within the day or
borrow it for a month, but be aware that not
all the books can be borrowed.
The first time you go to a library, you have
to apply and take a card that you have to use
in each library of the city during your stay
here. Other libraries in Trento are the
Biblioteca comunale, which is situated in Via
Roma, 55, has big studying rooms and a great
amount of books you can consult.
Photocopy Shops
There are many photocopy shops in the city.
We have some discount with the
Meccanografica in via Prati, near sociology,
or you can buy a photocopy card at the
library. Prices are almost the same (4 cents
per copy), you can copy the book, but not
more than the 15% of its whole, print
documents from you USB key, buy pens,
exercise books, highlighters, etc.
!
Housing Opera Universitaria
To all Erasmus students the university offers
the chance to have an Opera Universitaria
room. Deadlines will probably have already
been sent to you and if you have any doubts
you can ask them directly. Of course, you
are not obligated to have a room with the
Opera and there are several other private
alternatives.
Erasmus Under the Roof
On our website you can find the Erasmus
Under the Roof program. Several Italian
students are offering rooms for Erasmus
students. It is a good way to have Italian flat
mates and start learning the language
better. Also, most offers are pretty flexible.
You can see current offers or write you own
request there.
Private housing
You can look for private housing through
websites like Phosphoro or EasyStanza.
Here of course it may be more difficult
because it is only in Italian. If you have a
tutor you can ask for a hand. Please don't
contact us for information about this kind of
housing because there is little we can do. We
may create an easy standard email in Italian
you can send further on.
Announcements Boards
If you come to Trento without housing you
can take your time looking at the private
announcement boards in every faculty.
Obviously you will need a temporary sleeping
place.
Hostel - Giovane Europa, Youth Hostel
This is the only hostel in Trento. It is very
close to the train station. Price is not too
high and has generally good ratings.
If all else fails you can try posting a request
on our Facebook group for 2010-11 to see if
you can find a quick contact to private
lenders or Italian students from previous
Erasmus students. Rents generally go from
170 plus utilities to 250 or a little higher.
!
Logging In - Internet and Web Services In Trento you can find three types of free
Wireless connection, which we will divide in
university network and private-free-
connections.
University connection - UNITN
The wireless University network is available
to all users (students, technical and
administrative staff or visiting) and provides
access to the resources of the university
network and the Internet through proxy
service. To access the service all users must
use their own credentials, username and
password of the University of Trento (given
to you on check in). The start and duration
of the session are recorded by the university
systems. If you are using the computers in
the university labs, you have 180 minutes a
day. Instead if you have your own PC you can
be connected as long as you want.
The free wireless connections
Trento offers to his citizens two different
free-private connections: one is provided by
the Futur3 company (www.futur3.it) and
the network is called “FREE_LUNA_TRENTO”
and the other is provided by the city and his
is called “WILMA” or “Wilma Free”.
L.U.N.A.
To access to the free L.U.N.A. service you
will need to register to the service. You can
connect to the Internet @ FREE_LUNA using
any WiFi device (laptop, cell phone, PDA,
etc.). To use the service connectivity @
FREE_LUNA you must register online. Once
filled out online forms you will get username
and password via SMS to access the network
at any time. This network covers most of the
city center and student residences.
WILMA
WilmaNet is another free service available in
Trento. It is the public city network. To get
information on what WILMA is and how to
connect to it we redirect you to the F.A.Q.
page of the WILMA website English F.A.Q.
! !!!!!!
!
Calling Up - Mobile Phones Services In Italy there are various telephone
operators and phone work on a rechargeable
SIM card basis. Phone stores may be found
anywhere around the city center, and to sign
the contract you will need to have your
documents. Subscription to a service may
cost up to 20 euros, giving you a SIM card
with preloaded money. Most phone
companies have similar prices, with calls
ranging from 10 to 16 cents and SMSs around
15 cents. You can recharge (RICARICA) you
SIM in different ways:
a) go to a Tabaccheria (general store marked
with a black T outside) where you can ask for
an automatic recharge by giving your
number, or a do it yourself card which has a
code with which you can recharge on your
own. You need to specify your service
provider and the amount to recharge.
Usually it's 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 50 Euros.
b) recharge from an ATM machine by
inserting you number.
c) some on-line banking services allow you to
recharge directly from you bank account
Cashing In – Financial Services Cash or credit?
In Trento, but in general in Italy, we
typically use cash for our everyday shopping
needs. Many shops, bars or services (bus,
train) are not always enabled to accept
credit cards. So it is probably best that you
try to open a bank account to not spend to
much on transfer fees from you bank account
at home. When you draw money from other
banks’ ATM machines there is a surcharge of
2.00 Euros. You can also use the debit card
to pay for your rent.
Opening a bank account
All you need to open a bank account is our ID
card or passport (someone may ask you for
your tax code). If you are trying to open a
“student” bank account you may also be
required to bring a document that shows
that you are a part of the University of
Trento. You can find this on ESSE3 or with
the other of the documents you received at
the LLP-Office.
Why should you open a bank account? Some
apartment lenders may require you to have
an Italian bank account and when drawing
money from your local bank account you may
have to face high transfer taxes (between 2
and 6.00 Euros depending on your bank’s
policies).
As a student you may find bank hours
difficult. In fact they are generally open
from 08.00 to 13.00 and from 14.30 to 16.00
(may vary slightly from bank to bank).
!
Getting Around – Transportation Services There are several ways of making your way
through the city of Trento and thanks to the
small dimensions of the city center, it is
pretty difficult to get lost!
Bicycles
Trento is not a big city and the easiest way
of getting around is by bike. In the
wintertime the roads are normally cleared
from snow, but it is important to drive your
bike carefully. The bicycle is a functional
and ecological way to move around the city
and in the surrounding areas.
There are good opportunities to have a bike
without necessarily buying it. There are 250
bikes of the Opera Universitaria at students’
disposal. This service is called “Prestabici”
and the students of the University of Trento
and all the other users authorized by the
Opera Universitaria should pay 5,00 euros
every month for the bike. Everyone has to
give security fee of 60,00 euros (you can find
terms of service in ENG in the link above).
You will also have a monthly routine
maintenance. For further information and if
you want to download the form, please visit
the Opera Universitaria website:
http://www.operauni.tn.it/.
Local Buses
Trento has an efficient public transportation
service based almost exclusively on buses
(some of which are hydrogen powered). The
company, which manages the Public
Transport of Trento is the “Trentino
Trasporti” (http://www.ttesercizio.it/). In
the practical guide of the LLP-Erasmus Office
you should find prices of season passes.
Where to buy bus tickets
• At the little automatic “kiosque” at
the Railway Station of Trento (right
beside the bus stop);
• At the Ticket Office at the Central bus
station of Trento;
• At the FTM Stations (i.e. Railway of
Trento-Male) of Trento and of
Mezzolombardo (single tickets only);
• At any Tabaccheria (there is one
inside the train station as well);
You can choose if you want to buy single
tickets or a “carnet” of 10 tickets (a single
ticket costs 1.00 Euro and a carnet costs 9.00
Euros). A single ticket lasts 70-minutes and
can be used to change different buses in that
lapse of time (has to be validated on every
bus you board); 120-minutes tickets cost
1,30 Euros and daily tickets cost 2,60 Euros.
The penalty for not having or for not
validating a ticket can go from 15 to 150
Euros, so be nice and play by the rules.
Railway Lines
Trento is well connected to the other Italian
cities thanks to the Trenitalia services. The
main railway links are Bolzano, Verona and
Bassano del Grappa. From Verona you will
!
then be able to take a direct train to many
cities in Italy. From Bolzano you have access
to Austrian and German destinations. From
Bassano you can head to Venice or Padova.
There are also some daily trains going to
Rome or to Lecce (southern Italy).
For further information check the website of
Trenitalia and choose your journey!
http://www.trenitalia.com/
Ecomobile
In Trento is given the opportunity to use for
free the ECOMOBILE. It’s an electric car
provided by the Comune di Trento. You have
to follow a few rules to be able to use it:
• You have to be at least 21 and have
the driving license for at least 6
months;
• The service is available from Monday
to Saturday from 9:00 to 19:30 (on the
map at the second underground floor
of the apartment house Finestra sull’
Adige, piazza Mosna 1/A, at the
corner of via Sanseverino and via
Verdi);
• Reservation is recommended, call
0461 231600;

Car Park
If you come by car at Trento you need to
know where you can park it because you will
not need to use it very much, especially if
you stay in the city centre. Check this link to
see a complete list of the places where you
can park your car. (There are few areas
where you can park for free).

ESN Trento ESN Trento is a student association, in
Trento since 1992. The staff is made up of
motivated volunteers, students, post-grads
or workers who dedicate their time to
organizing events, trips, parties and all sorts
of stuff specifically for Erasmus students.
The spirit of the association is, in fact,
students helping students. ESN Trento is in a
bigger network of associations which group
up into national level (ESN Italy, ESN
Hungary, ESN Spain, etc.) and international
level (ESN International).
The association in primarily centered on the
Erasmus European mobility program but is
not exclusive to Erasmus students. You will
in fact find many students from Erasmus
Mundus, International Doctorate, Bilateral
Agreements, but also local students. The
primary goal is helping exchange student
integration with their new surroundings. We
do this organizing a series of events that
range from Tandem Café, international
dinners, trips to nearby cities (Venice,
Verona, Bolzano, Padua, Innsbruck, Mantua,
Bologna, Siena, Bassano del Grappa),
outdoor activities (rafting, soccer, hiking,
skiing, ice skating), themed parties (60s –
70s, black and white, nuts and bolts,
Halloween), wine tasting, museum visits, and
many many more. We also organize 4 days of
skiing/snowboarding towards the middle of
March (ESNow) and a rafting weekend in
May. Towards the end of the year you will
also have the chance to participate in the
national event (with 2000 other Erasmus
Students).
!
An Erasmus Friend for You – Tutor/Buddy Program Each year, together with the LLP-Erasmus
office of Trento, we organize a tutor-buddy
program known as an Erasmus friend for
you. If you wish to have a local student help
you in the first days and throughout your
stay you can apply to our program by clicking
the link at the bottom of the page.
What is a tutor?
A tutor is a local student who offers his or
her free time voluntarily to help an
incoming Erasmus student. Tutors will be
informed by ESN Trento of the kinds of things
they need to help you with, like finding the
LLP-Erasmus Office, filling in paperwork,
visiting your faculty and bringing you to the
ESN office. We'd like to specify that tutors
are volunteers, in no way connected or
representing ESN Trento or the University.
What is a buddy?
A buddy is an incoming Erasmus student who
requires some help in arriving, adapting and
integrating into the new environment.
Basically, you!
The tutor-buddy relationship depends solely
on the two people. You can find a super-
tutor, who checks up on how you’re doing all
year, or someone who can only give you help
for a few days. The same way you can be a
super-buddy, actively participating with your
tutor, bringing him/her to ESN activities,
parties or aperitifs. Many have already been
tutors, or actively participate with us so
don't worry.
If you think you could be interested please
follow the link and fill in the form
(remember to specify your arrival date). The
deadline to apply is the 10th of August.
Tutor-buddy pairs will be made shortly after
and communicated to you by email as soon
as possible.
http://www.esntrento.it/buddy
An Erasmus friend for you is limited to students in the Erasmus program. Other International
students are invited to read about the Buddy system program of the Welcome Office by clicking
here.
!
Parties and nightlife
As Trento is becoming more and more a
University town, bars and pubs are adapting
to the new student environment. Almost
every evening you can find happy hours in
various places and you have discounts in
some bars with the ESN card.
A typical evening activity is the aperitivo, a
pre-dinner light drink used to socialize. The
most famous is undoubtedly the Spritz
(sparkling white wine and Aperol mix), a
slightly alcoholic orange drink, which you
will learn to love. It is usually served with an
olive or orange slice and chips. We may
organize some special aperitifs like
International aperitif or Tandem Café
throughout the year. Aperitifs are very
popular, generally in bars near Piazza
Duomo, and you can find hundreds of
students out on certain nights (Tuesdays
usually).
There is a lack of discos, which some pubs
make up for by turning their basements into
dance halls. ESN will however, organize
various parties in a nearby disco, arranging
with the owners to have a free bus ride. Most
parties will be free theme but we do
organize several theme parties like
Halloween, 70's, Black & White, Hawaiian
and others. If you have some small costume
elements that you can afford to bring we
encourage you to do so.
Of course, being in Italy, you will also have a
chance to taste some great wine. There are
various Enoteche in the city where you can
have a taste of the good stuff. There are
many vineyards in Trentino and we may
organize a trip to nearby canteens. In Italy
wine is used mostly for celebration or casual
social events. It is not really part of Italian
culture to use wine to get drunk so drink it
moderately and try to enjoy it as it should be
enjoyed. One glass of good wine is much
better than a bottle of cheap supermarket
wine. If you ride your bike on the cycle route
to Rovereto or Mezzacorona you will ride
through beautiful vineyards and apple trees,
the second specialty of Trentino.
Remember to drink responsibly and possibly
don't exaggerate when you go out to party.
!
Sport & LeisureIf you are worried about keeping fit while
enjoying Italian cuisine, put your worries
aside. Trento has a wide variety of sports
and leisure activities to keep you active and
going.
UNI.Sport
UNI.Sport is the network of university
structures and services that deal with
sporting activities and free time. Students
owning a Uni.Sport card have free access to
all university facilities (gyms in San
Bartolameo and in the Sociology faculty,
tennis and squash fields, football fields).
There are then many activities or gyms
where UNI.Sport cart offers you discounts or
special courses. The UNI.Sport Office also
organizes events specifically for Erasmus
students, like Sail Together (sailing trips on
the Garda Lake), or skiing events with free
ski-passes, and many more. The UNI.Sport
office is in Via Prati (same as for the student
card). The card costs 20-25 Euros and has to
be paid with debit card or receipt of online
payment.
To get your UNI.Sport card it is a pre-
requisite that your Esse3 registration be
already inserted in the University database.
Once that is settled you will have to pre-
register ton the website:
http://www.unisport.tn.it/Card/Preintro
Activities
Together with the urban cycle lanes, there is
an 89 km stretch of bike path along the
Adige river that goes from Trento to the
border of the province of Verona, through
Rovereto and to the border of the province
of Bolzano. There are other connections
which can take you to Riva del Garda or Lago
di Caldonazzo. For a complete list check the
link
http://www.ciclabili.provincia.tn.it/traccia
ti_ciclopedonali/.
Other sports like rock climbing, hiking,
windsurfing, canoeing, rafting and more are
all available in or around the city. In the
winter there are busses to local ski areas
where you can ski, snowboard or go walking
with snowshoes (ciaspolata). ESN usually
organizes a few sporting events during the
year.
Around March/April subscriptions open for Facoltiadi: Faculty Olympics of the University of
Trento, where teams of different faculties challenge each other in Soap Soccer, Beach Volley,
Beach Tennis and Dragonboat.
!
Sports with ESN Trento ESNow
For the past 12 years ESN has organized
ESNow. Last year we brought together 230
Erasmus students from all of Italy on the
slopes of Trentino. Participants come from
different ESN sections of Italy. The event
usually takes place between the end of
February and the middle of March and lasts
four days. You will have the chance to
participate in ski or snowboard courses, ski
on some of the most beautiful slopes of the
Alps and taste local products. Every night
will be animated and organized be the ESN

ESN Rafting
Towards the end of May we usually organize
a rafting weekend for about 60 people. We
head to the Val di Sole, one of the most
beautiful valleys in Trentino. After an
afternoon of rafting we have a big grill
dinner and a party. The rafting center is
equipped with lots of sporting equipment for
volleyball, soccer, frisbee or rugby. We then
spend the night in the rafting center and the
next day have breakfast and catch the sun
for as long as we want. It Is usually one of
the most appreciated events of the year,
check out the video.
Ice Skating
Around December-January we have some
discounts with the ice rink in Trento and we
like to take ESNners ice skating. Many do it
for the first time and it is always a lot of
fun.
